Black Mirror: Joan Is Awful (2023)
Arre you havin a laugh?
I was praying halfway through that something serious comes out of this but to no avail. The best episodes in Black Mirror have been shocking and thoughtful. They make us ponder of what is to become if life gets twisted the way it does, but not in this one.
Instead you get a caricature of Salma Hayek and even Michael Cera who are all wasted in an attempt to make comedy out of a serious topic. The redeeming parts were spread out mostly in the second half but not enough to elevate it to the usual Black Mirror stellar quality.
Joan is certainly awful. Hope Season 6 gets back on track after this one.
Avatar (2009)
Movie-going will never be the same again !!!
-----------------Every once in a while there comes a time when the bar is raised, when there is.. a turning point, a pathbreaker. It happened with Ben-Hur, it happened with Titanic... it is time again for the moviegoer to be dazzled into something new. I agree to what someone said post watching its premiere "its going to be very tough to see a normal movie again!"
-----------------Avatar is a simple story (man looking to snatch something he wants from a different planet, different people) with ordinary performances (Sam worthington-terminator salvation, Sigourney Weaver-Aliens, among others).
-----------------What is far from ordinary is the "experience". Go watch it in 3-D, because no amount of reviews, critics, trailers, videos can do justice to this masterpiece of creation. To create the world of Pandora in its dazzling colors, the detailing in the creatures, flora and fauna, all are to be seen to be believed.
----------------- The training of Sam's Avatar, the emotions within the people for their environment, the so-obvious satire at the American way of if-you-want-it-snatch-it attitude, the massive war sequences, are all testimony to James Cameron's vision and his team's talent.
----------------- You will generally see great movies where your well- wishers will be able to explain to you what is good about it. Rarely comes a movie where explaining what is good about it becomes very tough.
----------------- Like I said, see it to believe it.
----------------- Also, while it may be hard to go with zero expectations after reading all its reviews, please try to do that...for that is one way to taste what this movie is all about. And if you had a crowd in the hall like I did, join them by giving it a standing ovation !
2012 (2009)
A decent end to disaster movie-making by Roland....
There is something about the Roland Emmerich style of movie making which makes it very ordinary and cliché'd for my liking.
----------------- It is not the fact that the movies are all disaster movies, or even the fact that they have decent special effects... It is to do with the fact that there are only a handful of smart folks saving the world, and they are all Americans... the rest of the world, is obviously at their mercy
----------------- 2012 is a good disaster movie. While it doesn't connect with you in the way an Independence Day does, it works in amazing you with probabilities of a complete catastrophe. It brings to life the foretelling around the 2012 events predicted to end the world
-----------------The massive volcano, the Tsunami, the earthquakes, shifting of the earth are all here...
----------------- So yes, the hero is able to dive from the volcano eruptions, dive into water where there is sheer death, help fly a plane, save the last ship on this earth etc etc... but that is what makes it fun... We all like to see some survive, and it makes good celebrations at the end... and that is what disaster movies are all about... The undying spirit of survival and the human angle in decision making...
-----------------Overall , a good entertainer....
Kismat Konnection (2008)
Their Kismat seems to work....
Yes... by far the freshest couple to hit the screen in recent times... different...yet fresh.... initial chemistry does exist...whether its shahid's boyish charms, or vidya's believable eyes..... whatever it may be.... but it has the signs of a new sparkling chemistry....my family seems to disagree with me.... but i am convinced that this pair can hold good for some time..... the story works.... struggling fresher... needs a little luck... meets a girls by chance... who seems to be getting the luck he needs........ """lucky lips... are always kissing""""...well, no kiss in this one, but their eyes say enough...
8/10...
Nishabd (2007)
Go Speechless (nishabd) with the "Indian Beauty"
It is tough to ignore the genius of the man called "Amitabh Bachchan". He has done such breakthrough movies after his comeback, its difficult to judge which Bachchan era was better.
Gia is the non-typical daughter's friend who comes to stay with the settled family in the hills of darjeeling (or a similar location). Showing the typical mannerisms of a brat, she slowly starts capturing the attention of the man of the house, and rest follows....
Since the movie has released just yesterday, it would be sacrilege to divulge what happens afterwards, but what is important to know is that Mr. Bachchan gives yet another powerhouse performance. I thought Black/Sarkaar could not be bettered, but just go watch a few scenes in the movie to get awed again by the man.
Gia debuts wonderfully by doing ample justice to her role (with the same name). It was always a role meant for a fresh face, and she does a fine job at that. It is obvious that the girl is confident with her body, coz she uses it well to show the innocence topped with a lot of sensuality.
Revathi dons the mantle of the wife, and I just get the feeling that she is a wasted talent in the whole cast. Her brilliance shines in a few parts but thats all she has in the whole movie.
Ritu (the daughter.. think her real name is Shraddha?)..has a little sobbing to do at the end, and again thats where she does justice to her being cast.
So does it look like I came out from the movie impressed? Yes, thats true. But as rightly pointed out by some critics, 'Indianising' the movie might have stopped this one from taking a cult status. By steering clear of the potential 'sexuality' and focusing on the 'love', it might have robbed the movie off some of its shine. This might not be an 'Amercian Beauty' but Nishabd sure proves to be an Indian Beauty.
Benji (1974)
You cannot imagine how moving this movie is
Full marks to Joe Camp for making such a beautiful film!.... Its all too easy for the dog lovers to absolutely fall in love with the movie, and Benji.....but this movie will always have the ability to change people from dog haters to dog lovers .... Benji is absolutely fabulous in this rendition of a street dog who has a certain way of living with with the people in the city.
What changes things is the kidnapping of Benji's human friends. But what is beautiful about the movie is that without using the crutches of special effects (read - talking animals), the expressiveness of Benji in various stages of the movie with just the barking to help is fabulous..... he falls in love (with another beauty of a pooch)...questions using his eyes, flaps his ear to express doubt, rolls on the grass to impress Tiffany (the pooch!)... the works!!! ...
Benji impresses!... and how...!... It doesn't take too much to know that the acting abilities of the humans in the movie aren't too much to talk about. But maybe that just enhances Benji's talent....
You would fall in love with BEnji and have tears flowing down your cheeks when they do the close-up on his sad eyes....
Yes, I am a dog lover.... but Benji .. he is the love of my life!
Omkara (2006)
Unexpected brilliance... silence ruled the hall !!
This must be one of the least-expected brilliant movies this year.. The movie-making skills of Vishal Bhardwaj are certainly not poor, but with this film, he surely notches up his ranking in our minds by so much more. The one thing I could notice while seeing the movie was the spellbound effect it had on the hall ... when the audience was ready to leave, there was not a sound.... till all came out and then a few blurted that they did not get the message of the movie.... well, guess what??... the story doesn't exude any message.. all it tries to do is give the "Indian" or better still "rural UP" touch to the Bard's masterpiece... Get awed by Saif' maturity in acting, or Ajay's powerful rendition... this movie deserves as much praise as any other classic this whole decade ! Cheers Vishal...carry on...
