Bones and All (2022)
Went in with low expectations and high hopes
I didn't expect to be able to wrap my head around the anticipated cannibalism going into this movie. But I thought if anyone can convince me eating people is okay, it would be Timothee Chalamet. And he gives it a valiant effort. I almost left the movie before he came on screen... Though I was interested in seeing how the story would pan out, I thought the backstory was underdeveloped and the initial acting took me out of it. Then Timothee comes on screen, and he does what he does best. He finds life in an at times dead script and elevates the performance of those around him. From then on, the movie was watchable though disturbing. I just never felt any sympathy for the characters. Didn't feel like a genuine love story and certain plot points felt rushed. Maybe I'm too biased against cannibalism... sue me. It's definitely unique.
The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) (2017)
Slightly worse version of Everybody's Fine
There were several things I really liked about the movie: the chemistry between Adam Sandler and Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman's performance, and the big surprise was how good Elizabeth Marvel was as Jean.
However, there were more things that held the film back as a movie including random, overdramatized dialogue which at times was meaningful, but at other times was painful to sit through. I enjoyed the focus on the characters but the plot didn't complement this exploration enough.
Zodiac (2007)
Slightly disappointed, but only because of Fincher's other films
Let me start off by saying that I didn't watch this film when it first came out. I watched it recently, only after seeing other Fincher (a top 3 director in my opinion) films such as Gone Girl, Se7en, The Social Network, and Fight Club. It is safe to say that after seeing this movies and seeing a star studded cast that included one of my favourite actors Jake Gyllenhaal, I had high hopes for this movie.
This movie is not a bad movie by any regard. However, I believe there are a number of things holding it back. The acting is certainly up to the standard I was expecting; however, given that they are telling the story of a true officially unsolved case, I do not think they did it full justice. There were a number of intriguing scenes that left me wondering what would happen next (especially at the start with the introduction of the Zodiac Killer), only for the intimacy of the moment to be broken by a "3 years later". 3 years later? Really? This may be me being extra critical of the movie failing to capture my attention and wanting to know what would happen next. After a certain number of time breaks, I lost interest in the Zodiac, like every character in the film except for Mark Ruffalo and Jake Gyllenhaal.
Overall, this film was enjoyable but I would not see myself returning to it when there are so many better movies about similar subjects out there.
