The Canterville Ghost (2021)
Watchable but not good
Firstly it's hilarious the featured review mocks the father's terrible wig. Which is in fact the actor's real hair... That said the American accents are indeed terrible, the twins acting is insufferable, the CGI and greenscreen has been done as cheaply as possible and it shows. There's even a talking rat for goodness sakes! It's entirely populated with clichés - cod Shakespearean dialogue, upper class twits, optimistic can do Yanks, picturesque Romany caravans and castles...
Unless you're watching with kids I'd definitely skip this bad adaptation.
In the UK this was shown as 2 feature length episodes which made it drag somewhat. I imagine 4 bitesize episodes made it more palatable for the US market.
Henry IX (2017)
Abysmal nonsense
Where to start? From the terrible accents, to the complete disregard for actual protocol, they could have been excused if it was in any way shape or form, funny... it just isn't. Not satire, not laugh out loud, just completely dull, dated, and uninspired writing. Dreadful gay stereotyping thrown in for good measure.
Traces (2019)
Dundee, or is it Bolton?
This was a fairly predictable and poor crime drama. The show makes a big deal of being set in Dundee, yet apart from tracking shots, and a few scenes, is obviously shot in Bolton. Which immediately negates every single review here that mentions how great Dundee/Scotland looks. Laura Fraser was the best thing in this, as she often is. Vincent Regan is suitably menacing which makes the supposed reveal is pointless. The lead actress is wooden and constantly makes choices that nobody really would.
Surprisingly it's got a second series.
Oh and every review moaning about the BBC? It was made by cable channel Alibi. BBC just dumped it in to fill the Covid bare schedules.
Jack and the Beanstalk: After Ever After (2020)
Poorly done, pointless re-imagining...
I found this to be really bad. Poorly written, badly acted, and with some awful prosthetics and special effects. The 'giant' was obviously a stilt walker which must have been done to cut costs. Goodness knows what persuaded Sheridan Smith to appear in this puerile rubbish...
Festival (2005)
Love it or hate it
This film seems to polarise opinion, either it's hated or feted by the reviewers before me. It's not meant to be a laugh riot comedy, so people expecting that will be disappointed.
However, if you saw the 2 series' of the excellent Ch4 'Book Group' from the same writer/director you will know what to expect. Tragedy, comedy, death, sex - it's all in there. If you liked/loved this film I'd recommend seeking out the series on DVD if it's available. The good news is that it's now in development as a film, the bad news is that at this stage nobody seems to know if it will feature the same characters or has been sold as a concept alone.
The cast are all excellent & it's interesting to see current ch4 'IT crowd' actors popping up before their 'sitcom' debut. Daniela Nardini is a talented actress and it's great to see her on screen again as she seems to have been absent awhile.
A lot has been made of 'explicit' sex scenes in other reviews, personally I find it refreshing that they are there. After all that's life. Stars shag groupies, married people cheat. I'm sick of scenes in otherwise realistic good movies that suddenly feature 'passionate' sex scenes, where the women still has her bra & knickers on & the guy doesn't even get his trousers off! Usually conducted under a sheet that miraculously stays glued over the man's genitals if he eventually does get naked. I know I always wrap myself in a sheet for sex, don't you? lol
Wicker Park (2004)
Plot downfall
The comments below about the lack of a simple mobile phone ruining the whole plot are true but it must be remembered this is a remake of a French film which was made in 1995 when mobile phones weren't as ubiquitous as they are nowadays.
Typical Hollywood laziness that the plot wasn't updated somehow with mobile address book being wiped for instance or phone falling down a toilet even! The fact that when Hollywood runs out of ideas it simply turns to European cinema and plunders it smacks of desperation!
If you hated this try the original L'Appartement/The Apartment, or give it a go even if you loved it, 'tho I'm not sure folk that loved it could cope with a foreign subtitled movie lol!
