Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024)
Not perfect but very close.
This is one of my favorite cartoons. Exciting story line, intriguing character development and so much entertainment.
The live action movie was a total flop because you can not cram 61 episodes of content into a 1 hour 43 min movie.
The tv series adaptation is way better, but not perfect.
The same problem applies. Throughout the cartoon you get so much relationship and character building elements that justifies all the fighting and struggles. Also the audience gets a chance to connect with the characters. So much so that I actually get emotional at moments. That to me shows that this is a great show.
Even though they take way more time then a movie and this is 8 episodes for a season, they still have to shorten the story and thereby losing that little bit of magic.
That being said. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this and can't wait to see my favorite characters in the next seasons. If Netflix's doesn't finish the story I'll be so disappointed. They made an awesome start with this, I hope they continue.
They have a great cast, a good special effects department, a steller story and characters to work with. This should be a great succes. Shows like this can show how important it is for movie and tv show to stick to the source material and do not take creative license to much.
Squid Game: The Challenge (2023)
Loved it, until I heard how it was filmed.
I loved squid game and was skeptical at first when I heard they were making it into a game show.
I do have to admit I really got into it when it did start. Now, just before the last episode is going to air tomorrow, I heard an interview with a contestant how revealed how it was filmed. He explained that the red light green light challenge took 7 hours to film. So it wasn't in real time which was such a letdown. Then I saw a Instagram video where someone explained that with the glass pannel challenge the contestants don't really drop, it's a stunt double. Again, disappointed.
For a 4.5 million dollar prise, I would expect to be at least a bit of a risk. So basically, it looks great and is exciting to watch but it's all fake and overproduced. Very disappointing.
Also, the contestants all watched to show of course so they emediatly apply all the tricks seen in the show. Understandable that they need to do most of the original challenges from the show, but it does give the contestants a great advantage.
FUBAR (2023)
Get your Arnold bingo card out.
I like that Arnold is now also making a series just like Silvester. The show has a good cast and it's funny where it needs to be.
So far I watched three episodes and its definitely entertaining. The remake of "true lies" as a tv series was not the best. (Originally played by Arnold)
Not every 80 show or movie should be remade. That's why I like this show better. It's more original.
Very noticeable are Arnolds catchphrases and movie titles scattered throughout the dialog. It feels like the writers did this on purpose just to get all the words out of the way or just for nostalgia.
Either way, I am pretty sure I want too see where this show is going.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022)
Worst Marvel tv show ever.
After watching the season finale I have to conclude that the shows growth spurt that I was waiting/hoping for ended up not to come. In actuality the show got progressively worse every episode. When expecting it couldn't get any worse I was confronted with the season finale and was horrifically surprised. It was an absolute deserter! Where Deadpool playfully flirts with the fourth wall, she hulk shreds through it and left a hulk sized present on the living room carpet. The show not only damages the Marvel cinematic universe in its entirety, but it also damages every other marvel character that is portraid in the show. The chronological timeline playlist that I made to view all the marvel shows will not include She-hulk. This show can not recover from this and should not have been made in the first place. I don't understand how marvel could have signed off on this.
Tom Swift (2022)
This could have been great, but it's not.
This could have been a good show. Special effects are good enough to see they could have done better, but unfortunately it's just off and en becomes comical. The same goes for the props. The dialog could be slightly better and the acting is not bad. Him being gay could just be part of his character, but it's pushed so far into the foreground that it shades out the story. It starts to fall into the cliché representation of gay and its distracts from, what could be a great show. It all gets a kind of Austin Powers vibe.
It's like they put a knockoff version of, Ironman, billionaire detective (anime), James Bond, mission impossible together, but badly.
A real swing and a miss.
Btw, using the windows error sound as Barkley activation sound is very annoying.
Ghost in the Shell (2017)
This could have been an amazing live action franchise.
I have rewatched this live action movie a couple of times now and just seeing more and more unnecessary aggravating changes they made in what is one of the best anime's out there. I understand that not everything can be incorporated in the film because the source material is super large, complex and rich. I just have a problem with the unnecessary changes and the absence of the section 9 team dynamic. It's not all about the Major. Like the last airbender could have been a 4 or 5 movie story, GITS has an even bigger potential.
So....
The major having a human brain instead of cyber brain... Why would you add the most fragile thing of the human body and put it into a super powerful cyborg body? No mention of her having highly advanced defence and attack barriers is such a missed opportunity. Her wizard class hacking skills are not displayed at all. Her entire struggle with being synthetic is so exaggerated and should have just been a side story or left out.
The strange Aramaki/Togusa hybrid...messed me up. A gunslinging action hero that for no reason speaks Japanese. Not the master strategist and Political liaison he should be.
Batou's ranger eye implant story change, so sad. Why would you change that? They should have just gave him those eyes from the start of the movie. So many body mods seen in this movie, it would not have even been necessary to even explain it. Instead they choose to incorrectly add it into a part of the story, why? Complete waist of time.
Ishikawa, Saito en Borma are unrecognisable, not introduced and barely have any role. None of their specialties are shown at all breaking the entire section 9 team dynamic. And leaving out the tachikoma's is just a crime.
I expect Rupert Sanders hasn't seen the anime series at all. He hasn't captured what this story and these characters are about at all.
If they would have done the homework and then done this movie right, this could have been an amazing movie franchise.
Now this movie is just a blender slushy of bits of fragmented flimsy story with some amazing CGI and Props mixed in, to try and save it. Mind you, without those CGI and props, this movie would not be worth watching. Such a missed opportunity.
This Came Out of Me (2022)
Censorship kinda ruins this show
I love medical shows. I watched "bizar ER" on bbc that was very well done. This show has the same setup with a big difference. The American censorship blurs a lot. So they don't show the exact thing they are working on if it's near any private parts or butt's. It's an interesting show, but less so the Bizar ER.
Kate (2021)
Almost really great.
This is an awesome movie, the story is a nice mix of great movies in the past. The action made me think of john wick only less perfect. Great cast but the main character Kate played by Mary Winstead was strangely a wrong choice for me. She fights like a badass for sure, but she does not have the right look/feel in my opinion, and I don't know why.
Other then that, the sets and visual ambiance was great. I would recommend this movie.
Lego Masters (2020)
Disappointing compared to other countries.
After finishing watching Lego Masters Australia I have now started with US version. The contrast is night and day quality wise. The quality of the builds is messy. Exposed joints, unflattering color combinations, I smooth models and the scale is all over the place. It's unfair to computer animate the stories of the models just to give it more excitement for the US audience. The models should do that on their own.
When it comes to the contestants if feels extremely overdramatized. Every pair has to have a gimmick or theme. It feels like they are wearing costumes instead of normal clothes. Crying about a fellow contestant being eliminated that they've just met is just rubbish. All dialog feels completely scripted and badly delivered. It ups the cringe level too 11. Even the crying and hugging during the builds for no reason feels very strange and forced.
Some of the contestants themselves are very overconfident, some even arrogant and rude.
If they up the Lego shots, up the build quality, lower the drama this show might get better. They should use Lego masters Australia as a template.
Update: season 3. The cringe lever is upped a lot in this season. Participants are painfully over-couched and over-scripted. Every contestant duo has to have a gimmick, which ups the corny level. The builds themselves are still not even close to those from Lego masters Australia. They also make the exits artificially emotional. Even in the first round?!
If they dial down everything and make it more about the builds it would be a better show. Better contestants wouldn't hurt either.
Update: season 4. Wauw, if you thought that it could not get worse after season 3, they managed to do it again. Worse and worse contestants. From the first episode you can already tell who will be the first to leave. Overly coordinated cloths is just embarrassing. I find myself pausing this show multiple times per episodes for s das daisy just because the cringe level is more that I can take. I only have so many eye rolls in me. I think this show is unsalvageable.
The Suicide Squad (2021)
DC fulfilled expectations again, with this disaster of a movie.
Okey DC managed to do it again. Taking a mediocre script and making it even less entertaining. Every progress in the story seems like it was made up on the spot by director with too much red bull in his system.
For some reason scarecrow now hit puberty. Heimdall is now a hit man who is allowed to say Jötunheim in casual conversation (giving me a marvel migraine), Yandu Udonta let his hair grow out and dies in the beginning of the movie, and and Kraglin is now a mutant for some reason. I thought there where strict rules for MCU actors playing in DC movies, don't. After an hour the plot is still struggling to go anywhere. There are definitely a lot of great actors in this movie but the script does not allow any of that to be shown. The most irrelevant scenes are drawn out to a mind numbingly slow crawl. They even managed to add the Rick and Morty episode Promortyus character in, which was extremely out of place. . This movie was promoted a being way better then the first one and a lot more funny. Halfway though the movie,...I'm still waiting for things to pick up. In the right hands Harley could have been an Jewel inside the muddy waters of the DC movies and this movies proves she can do way more (in the right directors hands). The last half hour I was desperately waiting for it to end and put this movie out of its misery.
To finish up, DC fulfilled exactly what I've grown to expect from DC movies, that's to say, not much. With some exceptions, but this isn't one of those exceptions. Maybe DC should stop making movies for a while until they learn how.
Space Jam: A New Legacy (2021)
Predictably bad.
This was sad to watch. Like Warner Bros took every successful franchise they had, put it in a blender, add some popular basketball players, hit purée, drank it up and vomited it all over this movie and basically using the space jam script. It's just sad. Even bugs noted that the story sounded familiar in the movie.
Great if athletes try a stab at acting or singing. Great follow your dreams. But sorry to say, this was not great acting.
I do not recommend watching this to anyone.
M.O.D.O.K. (2021)
Very disappointed
I usually like everything Marvel, but I think this is the exception. If I want to watch robot chicken, I'll watch that. This is just way less funny. This has nothing to do with marvel.
Assembly Required (2021)
Has potential but it needs to develop more
To start, One very very annoying thing about the first episode. Not blocking out the "Hey Google" command in a tv show, is a big NO NO!! They just triggered all google home devices of everyone who watches the show. Not cool.
Now to the episode. Its a nice concept. The slightly forced dialog can be a bit cringing at times. Hearing The ToolMan Tailer roar was music to my ears.
I'd personally like to see more of the building instead of people talking, but thats just me. We will just need to see how this show will develops.

Deep Blue Sea 2 (2018)
Painfull to watch.
This was horrible. Everything in this movie felt cheep and overdone. Dialog made no sense. Special effects where very poorly done. Not entertaining at all. There is just no depth to any of the characters. The baby shark actions were comical.
Don't know who did the lighting on this movie but I got pretty sick off that every section has its own color emergency lighting. Red, I can understand, but blue? green? Large facepalm.
Ghost in the Shell SAC_2045 (2020)
Sad they went with this style.
Watched the first episode (will update after the seasons is finished) Now I am a very big fan of the GITS franchise and this was not what I wat hoping for. The CGI cartoons feel very, very cheep and lazy. The thick black outlines makes it even worse. Body movement used to be a visual "ballet", now it looks weird. They probably used a lot of motion capture to make it look "more real" when in fact it doesn't with cartoons.
Only a great story can save this show a little bit but the visuals so are very disappointing and hard to watch. For some reason they shrunk down the tachikoma's as well for some reason. Like they miscalculated the dimensions because the rest of the design is not upgraded. Very sloppy.
Stargate Origins (2018)
Not bad for a fan fiction.
I was expecting a bit more from something baring the name Stargate. The begin tune is strange and give the feeling of a cheap porn parody. The acting and dialog quality equals that of a respectable school play. Some costumes seem to large which also adds to the amateur feel. The storyline is very weak which doesn't help either.
MacGyver (2016)
Tech IT consultant should be fired.
The mistakes made in this 2016 version of MacGyver you could get away with in the 90's but NOT 2016. Opening up a laptop with a hammer...extracting the HDD (intact)...opening the HDD case exposing the inside to the air....is a caveman strategy. A hacker or a sane person would not do this. I am not sure if the acting is the problem. It seems that they just lack a good technical consultant that could catch stuff like this.
For me this reboot feels like a fail. But, I want to give this a chance because I loves the 90's MacGyver. They will have there hand full improving this show to a watchable level. If they don't I fear this will be a one season flop like many 90's reboot attempts in the past.
