Leave the World Behind (2023)
Thought provoking human reactions in a crisis
This movie made me think.. a lot! It took a while to get into the director's style, but once there I was absorbed. It's not fast-paced, rather it gives room to absorb and think. It's an examination of human interaction in unusual circumstances and asks 'how would you react given these circumstances?' On this basis, the performances are great, the direction absorbing and the film thought provoking. Yes, it has plot holes and unexplained objects like the ship, the deer and babbling Mexican lady, but the point isn't to explain it but to examine how we would react in that situation. Like the movie Arrival, this will polarise opinion. For me, I loved it and will watch it again.
My Father's Will (2011)
Hilarious (for all the wrong reasons)
Somehow managing to capture the essence of a really low budget regional TV soap made in 1980, this film is hilarious. Not because it has a comedic script, but because it's so very bad. I could believe the script was written as a GCSE creative writing project, the same 16 year old going on to direct it without having any prior directorial experience. Having found the editor had walked out on the project, the writer/director had to turn his hand to a new previously untried skill. The best part was the weird pauses scattered throughout the whole film.. no I've changed my mind; the best part is the water sprayed on the heroines face to give the impression of tears... No, it's the heroine's father channelling Yoda as she boards the taxi to California. I genuinely feel sorry for the actors who tried to make the best of a terrible situation. I enjoyed the laugh though.
