Mulan (2020)
Disneyfying an entire culture
Badly told story, and imaginary fairytale of a so called Chinese culture, unconvincing portrayal by actors that had to deal with a poor storyline.
This movie shows what happens when you don't make choices, but want 'to do all'. It needs to be chinese, it needs to be a fairytale, it needs to have magic, it needs to be realisitic and above all....it need to be made for 'the western world', the US most prominently.
What a piece of work this movie. The makers missed the incredible opportunity to make Mulan into a more authentic (as far as this is possible with this story) story. But they didn't. Far from it.
Incorportating typical western ideologies, values and customes. The phoenix being the embodiment of this all. This creature was on the wrong set, in the wrong story for -probably- the right reason. But then...stay true to the Chinese setting. Make it into a Fenghuang, leader of women. I get that!
Disney only shows it wants to rule the world with their vision, rewriting other cultures as they see fit. And by all means, it is the freedom of every storyteller to do so. But if you do, then at least tell a good story and tell it good.
The four stars for this movie only give credit to the amazing clothing and visuals (although I don't expect them to be true to a Chinese history).
Spoed (2000)
Not even close to "ER"
I was staggered by the first sentence of the plot summary. "This medical series can be considered as the closest Flemish counterpart of "ER"." Ohw, please come on!! This is the worst thing I have ever seen. Bad acting, a cheap production, implausible (to say the least)plot. To be honest, a production as expensive as "ER", that is quit impossible in Europe, but still. I haven't been able to watch one show from beginning through end.
Well, I doubt it will be a case of taste, but I don't know all. Let's keep this in the middle... Still,IMDb, Please revoke this opening sentence in the plot summary, as it is an insult to "ER".
Låt den rätte komma in (2008)
Vampiremovie minus the Hollywood extravaganza
Seen at the International Film Festival in Rotterdam. Very original plot! And the result: a surprising movie in a genre of realistic triller/horror. It explores the life of a vampire child, or as she puts it: "I love on blood, so yes" (she is a vampire).
What to expect? A vampire movie with all the Hollywood extravaganza and surreal romance stripped of. The fact that this movie wasn't made 'in a Hollywood basement', makes it even more interesting! It is as if this movie was a documentary of this girls life. Complete with all emotions and 'problems' she encounters in her life.
Probably not a movie to watch on an empty stomach. But certainly a movie worth your time, especially when you like to be surprised!
Si le vent soulève les sables (2006)
This Movie really touches the way you think...
I've seen this movie at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. It was very very touching. A story about an African family that must undertake a journey to find water. The dangers underway are not in favor of these people. I don't want to say more, you have to see the rest for yourself!!
I makes you realize that we can make a fuss about things that do not matter (too much). I mean in our, rich, world, the problems and challenges we encounter can be very real and frustrating. And although these problems can be very real, we also tend to make problems out of nothing: The very specific kind of dessert wasn't available in the supermarket, etc.
This movie's a movie that you wouldn't watch with a bag of popcorn, but still I'd like to recommend it to get a more balanced view of the world we all live in.
