Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
They Couldn't Do It Twice
First of all, the first Avengers is great. It is a well written, clever, and well acted movie. It's action scenes are great, it features a god villain, and above all else, it puts many major superheroes into one movie. That was the draw. Seeing all your favorite heroes on screen is what matters. That effect couldn't be replicated. Age of Ultron is not a bad movie by any means, but it also doesn't add anything new. The CGI fight scenes are still good, the heroes still work well together, the comedy is (somewhat) spot on, and the villain is still well written. Ultron simply relies too much on the wow factor that brought its predecessor so much success. The comedy is also up fro debate. It seems unnatural in this movie, almost forced. The characters are sarcastic and witty, but this movie was filled with comedic moments, almost too much so. The jokes fall very flat when the audience is being beaten over the head with them. The finale is also, well, not exciting. If an editor placed the finale of the first Avengers films and this one side by side, there is very little difference. The over the top CGI cluster that is the finale just doesn't seem as exciting after seeing an almost copy paste from the original. Avenger Age of Ultron is a good movie, its a fun movie, but it doesn't bring anything new to the table. Had the film actually brought something new, like a darker plot, or a more interesting plot, or... anything really, the movie would have been great. Unless Marvel stops dumbing down their films, they are going to hit a wall. They need to learn that their most successful films are the ones that are different (ie Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain America: Winter Soldier). If they don't learn this lesson, future films will be just as OK as Age of Ultron, and that is a scary thought.
The Babadook (2014)
True Horror
Who ever said that horror movies needed to have a cliché story and bad acting? Whoever did has made consistent flops such as Annabelle and Oija. Seriously, this movie does something better than any modern film, it is actually decent quality. Not only is the acting convincing, this slow burn is truly horrifying. By the third act, the tension is so high I could touch it. The monster in the movie is, well, I can't say without spoiling anything. Let's just say that it isn't the scary part. The Babadook is a perfect psychological horror. It takes the slow burn of The Shining and mixes it with a monster movie. It builds tension, and never breaks it with stupid jump-scares. This movies won't make anyone jump out of their seat, but rather dig their nails into the arm rests. I understand that this isn't a movie for everyone. This movie is for fans who are annoyed with how bad modern horror movies are, and that includes me. Some will see this film as an unscary piece of garbage because it lacks everything found in a modern horror film. It lacks cliché characters, cliché story, jump-scares of any description, and even a proper ending. This movie leaves the audience with a sense of dread form beginning to end, something I haven't experienced from a horror movie since the 80's. The Babadook is a masterpiece of the horror genre, but it is also a big change. Not everyone will like this movie, many will hate it, but everyone should give it a chance. Go in with an open mind, and be pleasantly surprised.
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
Action Movie of the 2000s and 2010s
Every decade has its defining action movie. The 1970s had Mad Max, the 1980s had Terminator and Die Hard, the 1990s had Terminator 2 and Golden Eye, the 2000s and 2010s have Mad Max: Fury Road. I, for one, am not a fan of modern day action movies. They are lazy, CGI clusters that are just made to look good, and they can't even do that right. Modern day directors simply don't understand how to make an action movie. Thankfully, George Miller hasn't forgotten. Miller's Mad Max remembers something that all others seem to have forgotten, the fun aspect. Fury Road is pure fun. It doesn't let story of perfect development get in the way of that. The story remains simple, as it should be. The other major problem with modern day action is the overuse of CGI. Fury Road has an astounding lack of it. The amount of practical effects in this movie is amazing, the movie simply looks great. If it had all been done with CGI, this would have been much more disappointing. I highly recommend Mad Max: Fury Road to all action movie fans out there, as it is the best one in decades.
Unbroken (2014)
Not Impressed
When I first saw the trailers for Unbroken, I had high hopes. It is unfortunate that these hopes were dashed within the starting minutes of the film. While the plot, and acting, is very strong, the rest fell flat. The actors stand out in their roles, making them their own, and the plot felt intense yet inspirational. This should make a great movie about survival, but it doesn't. Everything was there for this movie, it should have been great. The problem with the film is poor direction, poor effects, and, well to put it simply, lack of character development. While the acting was great, it couldn't make me care at all about the characters. I watched knowing the names of almost none of the supporting characters, including that of the family of the main character, and it made me lose interest. Even the main character's development is rushed, and by the end of the movie I didn't care if he lived or died (fully being aware he lives by the way). While the film does attempt to honor the late Louie Zamperini, it simply doesn't convey his story well at all. The movie feels rushed, never allows the audience to care about the characters, is cliché in almost every way, and even relies on a jump scare to keep the audience interested. The film itself should be able to maintain my interest without the use of cheap tricks such as that. If the movie was poorly acted, it would be garbage, but the acting does take it up a notch, but still can't carry this movie to greatness.
Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)
Shockingly Amazing
To be blatantly honest, I din't expect much from this film. I heard it was critically acclaimed, but "12 Years a Slave" was also loved by critics and that movie didn't deserve its praise. I was shocked to discover one of the most brilliant movies to be made in the past decade. This movie truly transcends from entertainment to art, and I think that's what the director was going for. First of all, the cinematography was fantastical, allowing the entire film to look like it was made in one shot. It is awe inspiring, but cinematography cannot carry a film. That's where the acting came in. Every character was perfect, played brilliantly by the cast. Characters were not only believable, but also interesting, which is hard to pull off well. The story does fall a little flat, but not so in a bad way. The somewhat simple story allows the actors to play off each other perfectly, and also allows the film to make many statements about things such as film making and critics. The film truly surpassed all expectations, and even explores the psychological side of Micheal Keaton's character, which leads to many shenanigans. These shenanigans show the film to actually be quite funny, and even more entertaining. Birdman was a surprise hit, and it deserves every award it will surely be nominated for. If you missed Birdman, it is a much watch.
Zombieland (2009)
Shaun of the Dead 2
Zombieland successfully does something that hasn't happened since Shaun of the Dead, make zombies enjoyable. While the movie arguably isn't a "real" zombie movie like Dawn of the Dead, it still is an exceptional addition to the genre. To put it lightly, the zombie genre has grown stale, boring, and lame if you will. Gems such as Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland are what keep it alive, and that isn't a bad thing. While many terrible movies will be released because of these movies, we suffer through them for movies like Zombieland. Speaking solely of this movie though, the acting is great, the jokes are hilarious and very clever (plus an amazing cameo), and the zombies look great. He best part is that there are actual scary parts of this comedy movie. I think the most amazing thing about Zombieland is it pulled a Shaun of the Dead, make zombies funny but also still be a zombie movie, which many believed to be a one time feat. This movie is a spiritual successor to the earlier zombie flick, and it lives up to it gloriously. Seriously though, if you haven't seen this movie or Shaun of the Dead, watch them now.
X-Ray and Vav (2014)
An Exceptional Start
I had almost no expectations for this show. I honestly thought it would be just a really bad cash grab, but RT surprised me. While the show is simply a comedy, it is amazing quality. The clever writing, funny characters, and almost perfectly stupid plot all fit together. The jokes are funny, and the animation is breathtaking. For a small company to pull off animation that is better than modern day TV shows is fantastic. I never though anything could remind me of the old days on Cartoon Network (before is fell apart), but this show did. It could fit well on TV if the adult humor was removed, but that is also a part of its charm. This show isn't for kids, but it is definitely worth a watch. I can't wait for the next episodes!
RWBY (2012)
Surprising
I've come to expect a lot out of Roosterteeth, and their attempt at an anime show worried me. The first episode of RWBY did have me worried, with a bizarre animation style and story. The action was cool and the voice acting spot on, but I was still worried. Now, I am through season 2 and I love it. The music is great, the story is interesting, and the animation fits the show perfectly. While the episodes are short, they do rival their TV counterparts in quality and length doesn't make a difference. RWBY is better quality than Cartoon Network shows and is definitely worth the watch. It stands up to RT's Red vs Blue, and is more family friendly. The main characters are very good and can be related to. This show is overall very awesome, but it does have an acquired taste. It isn't for everyone, but everyone should give it a shot.
Dance Moms (2011)
This Show Made Suicide an Option
i would rate this show 0, but IMDb won't let me. By giving it a 1, it means this show worth something. If you want to lose millions of brain cells in a span of seconds, attempt to watch this show. Its about a large fat woman yelling at young girls while their moms fight in the background and live through their children. To be honest, all of these people are a waste of atoms and should be executed immediately. The show isn't interesting, funny, cool, intelligent, or even slightly entertaining. Every time the show comes on I have a small aneurysm. If this show stays on TV much longer, I will psychically explode. The only thing this show succeeds at is pissing me off. Anyone who watches this show is beyond stupid, and I give it a 0/10.
