Skhizein (2008)
Inspiring and sad
This movie is truly inspiring! It's depressive, though. But definitely worth seeing. I actually like the animation style. Original and appropriate for the story. However, it's not a children's animation. It's mature, it's sad.
I would have expected a false sophistication of the movie from the beginning - but it's not like this. It has depth, it is creative and clever. The saddest thing is how he is only one who sees himself as he is and no one understands his condition. But he keeps fighting it. Just like everyone else in some way. And of course, the end is heartbreaking as I almost shed a tear.
Certainly underrated.
Conclusion: You must see it!! This is without doubt among the best short animation films I have ever seen.
More (1998)
Amazing!
This is without doubt one of the best short movies I have ever seen. It is sad, however, than it isn't so well-known.
What makes the movie beautiful? Everything from the plot, idea, to the music. Everything seems to fit like a puzzle. And this is a hard thing to accomplish. Very well made from both technical point of view and from the point of view of the plot and the message it sends.
The most striking aspect is how well we can relate to it.Not only us as individuals, but as a society. His and their story is ours. I must say that I am honestly not a huge fan of animation- but with plots like this it truly helps accomplish its aim and touch the viewer.
This short is for everyone. Everyone. And you'll love it. Watch it and you'll show it to your friends, for sure.
Ted (2012)
Fine, but don't expect anything remarkable
I watched this movie a few months ago. I had high expectations, though. But I feel that it's not much to tell about it. Nothing more than a 6 out of 10.
I cannot deny that the idea it's interesting. Most of the jokes were fine, it had some humour in it. But something was missing. No, I wasn't looking for depth. But maybe for better humour- better than sexual and drugs jokes. It was fine, but nothing special, compared to everyone's hype. There are far better comedies than this- but if you don't take it seriously and don't have high expectations, it's perfect for a Friday night with friends.
Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012)
Beautiful & breathtaking.
I have seen this movie only two weeks ago and the only regret I have is not seeing it earlier!
Almost breathtaking! It is without a doubt one of the most original recent films.
From the visual point of view, it is a masterpiece. Steady cams alternate with "shaky" images, which fulfill their aim- you basically see everything through her eyes, through a child's eyes. Unexpected zooms, shaky, blurred images are usual here. It is true, at times they actually become a bit uncomfortable, but it doesen't take any of the movie's greatness.
What impressed me the most was Hushpuppy- her performance was flawless! She portrayed the character remarkably. Childish and not childish. Smart yet innocent. She's a sum of contradictions, which make her a truly interesting (and inspiring!) character.Everything is seen through her eyes (including the visuals, as I said above) Even the beginning of the movie is fairy-tale like, just as a child would imagine it.
The whole movie actually was a sum of paradoxes. When you see the dirty, not only the physical dirt, but the dirt of the society (our society actually) , it's depressing. It's rejectable. On the other hand, these characters happiness, their optimism is uplifting. It gives you hope.
This is a thought-provoking movie.Yet it's not sophisticated. It simply makes you wonder what's really valuable. What's important. In an original way. So it's a must-see, you will love it !
The Hunger Games (2012)
Disappointing, predictable, don't watch it!
I was deeply disappointed by the movie. And I haven't even read the book!
First of all, I felt that the movie was way too long for the story it told. Too many unnecessary details for me, a person who hasn't read the book. Basically, wasted time. Secondly, the characters were relatively poor developed. I mean, everything was way too predictable. And you will probably get what happens next after the first 30 minutes!
What is more, the camera shake was at times annoying- and by seeing the movie in the cinema, I was even more annoyed by it. Unnecessary again.
However, the fantasy part was well developed and it was the only "up" for me. Special effects made it for me.
All in all, if you think of watching this movie - think twice. Unless you're a fan of the books and you're curious about the adaptation, I wouldn't recommend seeing it.
