The Batman (2022)
A Great Addition to the Superhero Genre
I went in with lukewarm expectations. I loved the first teaser that was released back in August, 2020 and was super hyped. But that slowly started dying down for me as the release date came closer. I was still excited to see the movie as I love Matt Reeves' previous works (I still consider the new Planet of the Apes trilogy to be one of the best trios ever made). And boy, did Reeves not disappoint with his version of the Batman.
From the start it's made clear that this is going to be a dark, eerie and gloomy movie. The tone is set and it never changes which I think worked well for the movie. It's an amazing detective thriller story where we join Batman and Gordon in solving the crimes happening in Gotham. This intertwined with other socio-political things happening with Falcone and Oz show how rotten Gotham is. Selina gets involved in this too. I loved Zoe's version of Catwoman, she did an amazing job here. And although you see very little of Paul Dano outside of his Riddler costume, but when he does, its chilling and memorable.
The action sequences are great, the fights are so grounded and real and show how strong Batman is. The chase sequence that was teased in the trailers was one of the best sequences in the movie, the sound, music and visuals, it was very exhilarating. Greig Fraser's work in this movie is so damn good. I am dumbfounded how he managed to pull two visually great movies within a year, Dune and now this. He is one of the best cinematographers working in the industry and he is at the top of his game. The sets, locations and visual effects look very raw and believable and almost convinces you that you're there in Gotham with all these characters.
It is almost a 3 hour long movie and I would say, at some points you do feel the length. But I think the overall story justifies its duration. I am super excited for the spin-off TV series that Matt Reeves has lined up and the obvious sequel to this movie.
Eternals (2021)
A Breath of Fresh Air in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
I went in with little to no expectations and I was pleasantly surprised by what the movie offered. Multiple relatively unknown new characters and their dynamics, their stories spanning centuries.
It was definitely not a typical Marvel fare that at least I'm acclimated with. Watching this movie, it didn't feel like it's an MCU movie. It was different, something unexpected.
I do understand some people not liking this movie. I have some criticism too, like the editing in the beginning seemed a bit sloppy. And watching it in IMAX, the transition between aspect ratios was not smooth, very apparent and a bit distracting. The visuals on the other hand were amazing. Some of the action sequences were really good and were executed perfectly (like the usage of hand held camera during a fight scene between a deviant and Ikaris in Amazon).
Overall, it felt nice to witness something very different from MCU. I am eager to see them try new things and take their world to different directions and keep it interesting and unpredictable.
Sicario (2015)
A very intense thriller with exceptional cast.
The first thing I'd like to say about this movie is that it's crazy AF!
I enjoyed the entire film from start till end. There are so many intense scenes and sequences, they'll get your heart pounding. The story of the film is pretty basic, but the way they have presented is exceptional. The cast is extraordinary, with Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin and the mighty Benicio Del Toro.
The film has been written well but there are some places where the scenes seem prolonged. But maybe they might have done it for build up the intensity.
The film looks gorgeous without any doubt with Roger Deakins behind the camera. That man never fails to amaze us. The sequences in Juarez, the landscape shots, and the night-vision tunnel sequence are breathtaking.
I'd also like to mention that the music of the film is very very good. From the beginning raid scene till the end, the music syncs so well the film that it takes the movie to a totally new level. Great work by Johann Johannsson.
The director has done a great job with this film. The direction was perfect. He did a great job in Prisoners but this is an entirely different work but he succeeds. I can't wait to see what he's gonna do with the Blade Runner sequel.
Finally the cast, Josh Brolin's character is vague but he has done a good job. Emily Blunt as Kate shines in this film and she definitely shows that she's capable of handling diverse roles. But the man of the hour Benicio Del Toro, he steals the show. His character Alejandro is enigmatic and Del Toro plays it flawlessly. His acting seems so effortless. He has a tremendous job in this film.
All in all, this film is fun to watch and I sincerely hope that it gets all the recognition it deserves during the awards season.
Interstellar (2014)
An Excellent Movie with an Unexpected third act.
First of all I'd like to say that Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan have done one of the finest work with this film.
The unexpected Third Act which is the Ultimate Show Stealer of the movie and I don't want to spoil it.
Christopher Nolan has really mastered his skill in story telling and direction. This movie is the best example for that. The cinematography is mesmerizing.Music by Hans Zimmer syncs with the film quite subtly but its not his best work.
As a whole,I think the movie will get a divisive response but I was really amazed and awe-struck after watching this movie because I never had such a Movie experience. I'm definitely ready to leave all the possible plot holes or mistakes and accept the movie the way it is.
I strongly recommend everyone to watch this movie, though I don't really expect that everyone would like it.
Gone Girl (2014)
Very Thrilling and an Absolutely Engaging Movie..Special note to the Music - It's Outstanding!
Being the one who has read the book, I was looking forward to watch the movie and see what the story looks like given in the hands of immensely skillful Mr. David Fincher.
It is a relief to finally know that the movie is very much true to the book with few changes here and there. This is a great example of a book condensed into a feature film.I think the advantage here is that the author of the book is herself the writer of film and she has kept all the twists and the dark tone of the book in the film as well.
What makes the movie even more engaging and darker is the beautiful, thrill inducing music by Trent Reznor & Attics Ross. The music is bound to get its deserving appreciation and applause.
The performances given by the leading couple Ben Affleck(playing Nick Dunne) and Rosamund Pike(as Amy Elliot) are mesmerizing and a revelation. Singling out the performance given by Rosamund Pike, she has done an excellent job giving both the beauty and the darker Amy flawlessly. Kim Dickens(as Rhonda Boney) is at her best here.Carrie Coon(as Mar"Go" Dunne) is amazing and gives a great performance as Nick's twin. The only letdown in terms of performances is Neil Patrick Harris(as Desi Collings). In some way, he did not play the Desi the way I wanted him to be.
Overall,Two thumbs up for both David Fincher and Gillian Flynn for succeeding in adapting the book into the film.I really enjoyed the movie.Even though there were few(or many) changes done in the film,it ultimately triumphs in presenting the same concept, tone and story as that of the book.
Fargo: A Fox, a Rabbit, and a Cabbage (2014)
A Shocker Penultimate Episode.
The previous episode was ended so abruptly that it made me wanting for more as soon as possible. This episode undoubtedly exceeded my expectations. The beginning of the episode shows to what an extent Malvo is cruel and is capable of doing anything.
The episode continues with some nail-biting,tension-rousing moments and the final act steals the show. The end shows the real character of Lester. The end was a complete shocker!
The performances by Billy Bob Thornton as we've seen throughout the series is chilling and terrifying.Martin Freeman shows the creepiness developing in Lester flawlessly.Allison Tolmon was great as always.
The show is consistent with it's quality I seriously cannot wait for the finale to air.
Game of Thrones: The Watchers on the Wall (2014)
Great Battle Sequences.That's it!
The episode had a slow start but picked up pretty soon. The episode had some great battle sequences. But at some places it seemed dreaded and lengthy.
There are many scenes which were shot beautifully and with an outstanding pace. There were no major gasp moments in this episode(at least for me).The atmosphere set by the episode is dark and dreary.
John Bradley(Samwell Tarly) did an amazing job in this episode. He gave a performance to really look forward to.Kit Harrington as always was like the Jon Snow we have seen.
Coming to the violence it was a bit let down for me.I expected a lot of blood-shed in this episode, though I'd like to confess that I haven't read the books yet.
I hope this episode was a kind of diversion from what's going to happen in the next one. This episode was not as cool as the previous episode 9s of this show. But many other episodes of this season were pretty shocking.
Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
Amazing Effects,Great 3D,Awesome Movie!!
The movie starts off with a great pace and continues with it till the end.I enjoyed the movie throughout. It is truly,as many of them have said "The best original sci-fi flick after Inception". Tom Cruise is back in the game. The presence of humor in this film is surprising and is great. The action is fast paced, exhilarating, slickly executed.Performances by Tom Cruise,Emily Blunt are great.Presence of Bill Paxton makes the movie more enjoyable.Coming to 3D,I found it very engaging. It was jaw-dropping awesome.Surely the 3D makes you move your head here and there because many things fly off the screen suddenly. In less than 2 hours we go through a hell of a ride which sure cannot be missed.I strongly recommend this movie to everyone.
