Colossal (2016)
It has all the right parts, but none of them fit together
The concept of the movie is interesting and original, the characters are set up in a really good way, the acting is good in each scene and I really liked the casting, but the movie feels completely mechanical and every event was scripted without giving thought to how the plot needed to get there.
If I were to take a guess, the movie was probably around 3 hours long and then they cut out all the scenes which transitioned the characters slowly to where the plot was going, because at each step from the start it just feels like the plot needs to move on, so the situation and the characters completely change in the span of 7-10 minutes with no good reason to. There are multiple instances when characters pull a 180 with seemingly no reason to or with no time passing.
The Flash (2014)
A very relatable show that becomes juvinile nonsense
The show starts off strong, although in the first 3 seasons it starts becoming a little formulaic where the flash needs to become faster defeat the unstoppable villain and turn into the superhero he was always meant to be (it is lovely bubblegum).
Then they started moving away from the formula by trying to focus on the entire team flash, although this devolves slowly into introducing side characters who spin up reality TV level drama. To allow for the other characters to shine the writers with their infinite wisdom that they will make the villains 1 dimensional cartoons (it is very difficult to think of a single villain that had any logic behind their motivation).
I really think the show should have had a spinoff at the end of season 3, because after that the show is trying to appeal to a completely different demographic, so my advice is either start from season 4 or stop at season 3.
The Twilight Zone (2019)
I want to like this show more than I do
The show has so many good elements in it and it started in a fairly good place, but the show is rather predictable and it relies on you only keep watching because you want to know the ending. The hooks are compelling, but there is some ineffable quality to the show that just fails to entertain you on the journey (if you pitched any of the ideas for the episodes they should be really compelling), not to mention around 40% of the shows have a very strong woke component, which is really off putting. Basically the creation was great but the execution makes it very hard to enjoy.
Hannibal (2013)
Fascinating psychopathy at its finest. Filling every thrill seeking part of the psyche.
The story is so packed with different things happening. It is forty minutes long, yet it feels closer to an entire film. It is quite fascinating and highly entertaining. It is not filled with eye candy, but with deeper dialog with some special effects. It gives the viewer a deeper insight into the borderline delusions of the main character.
The dialog is fantastically written. It is a combination of imagination and horror. This blend creates a psychological horror that grips you to you very soul. The only possible bad thing that I could say about it is Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) accent. It should be a higher class a more aristocratic richness instead of the thick coarse German accent, but that is merely semantics.
The series has a strong mentor-ship like connection between Graham and Hannibal Lecter that is improved by the clear mental instability of both. It makes you wonder what Hannibal Lecter sees for the future.
The Graham character is not much like the one of red dragon, yet it is a great improvement with the modernization of him. This is a rather exceptional series and I hope to see plenty of it in the future.
The Host (2013)
The problem is not the execution of the idea, but the idea itself.
This is not close to a classic sci-fi film. It had the potential to do so, but it was lost about 20 minutes in. It is not a romance film either and the romance element seemed to be rather forced. They did add a spiritual element (not religions). That was rather interesting, but it was not close to the entire film.
This may contain spoilers
The first half of the film gives an avid description of the futuristic environment created. This was fairly interesting and you were able to appreciate the dialog between the characters. It gave you a good idea of how they thought and how they interacted with one another. Guys will like it for the bit of action and the exploration and girls will like it for the main character coming out of her shell.
In the second half it very nearly killed the movie. If you hated twilight you should fast forward for about a half an hour. You will probably watch a better version of the film then most people. It tries to convey the complexities of a romance two people in the same body, that is poorly executed and should not be watched. It might have worked out if the entire film was about that, but it is currently a sad excuse for romance. Then the film picks up and goes into a more spiritual tone, that leaves the viewer with a sense of hope.
How to fix The film has so many key ideas it wishes to convey, that the viewer cannot fully appreciate any one. They should have made it into a hour and a half film and removed the romance. It was either that or hack the majority of the story and make a proper romance.
Overall Characters The acting was done well. I felt the characters were not introduced well enough, but is not unforgivable. It also has a rather great dialog, that you can almost understand the thoughts of all the characters. Plot The plot has a rather brilliant premise and gives a new social environment, that is fun to learn about. The storyline was consistent and was fun to watch. Sadly the director/writer tried to use to many main motives for the film, that are not fully expressed. This leaves the viewer with a rather muddled version of all the themes.
Sadly I believe this may be the worst of all Andrew Niccol's work. He is a great director and I always said he was special, because he never made a film that was not great. I can no longer say that. I think the Host does hold up as better that average film and is great for a Stephenie Meyer book. 7/10
