Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
The waves of fast track shiny junk is just relentless and its exhausting!
The waves of fast track shiny junk is just relentless and its exhausting!
I am an avid fan of sci fi, a genre that feels starved of good shows so I'm always hopeful when something new pops up.
Now this being a Netflix show I didn't have a lot of expectation but boy was I not prepared for this level of low effort ... everything.
Firstly, this feels like a ripoff or melting pot maybe to be more fair, of several well established franchises. It feels like a Warhammer meets Star Wars and others.
The graphics/atmosphere is good. The actors do what they can with the moronic pace, characters and plot they were given.
That being said, I can find NOTHING else redeeming for this ...thing.
The story is fast tracked to the point it feels like snapshots barely hanging on to context and to their previous narrative. The plot is weak. The characters are cringey and unbelievable.
As story unfolds and advances, characters and actions are increasingly cringe to the point of ridiculous.
The entire world concept is in a perpetual conflict with itself, where technology is both advanced as well as antiquated at the same time.
For example you have this all conquering empire that can travel the vast reaches of the galaxy, relentlessly enslaving, yet they can do soil analysis, they can't recognize outlaws, they have unruly robots, moronic and ill prepared 'soldiers'. The regents, while clearly presented as cold blooded genocidal maniacs are somehow also good...
The wars presented are intensely fought by infantry despite technology. I mean even Star Wars and Warhammer (where they seem to have borrowed a lot of the looks, motifs, etc.), do a lot better to feel more... advanced...
Too bad frankly... Wasted potential & budget :(.
The Witcher (2019)
Great story, great cast, destroyed by a crazy woman
The show was literally just something to catch on tape and broadcast. The Wither has amazing lore and story, it already had settings, costumes, intrigue, politics, drama, fun, it already had a huge fan-base, was well established and they had the perfect cast for it with the perfect main character Geralt, played by an actual fan of the series.
Yet, somehow, they managed to completely destroy it all with pushing chauvinist BS, while lying to all the fans that they will stick to the story, all the while changing everything to whatever a single person thought to be better as its probably resonating to her own, personal worldviews and narrow mind... A real shame...
When the goal becomes to push some internal narrative that exists only in your own head and to actively mock an entire generation or cohorts of customers JUST BECAUSE they DON'T LIKE THE SAME THINGS AND HAVE DIFFERENT OPINIONS and you start getting evidence for that, the problem is you not anything external to that.
I cant even begin to describe in words how INSANE that sounds for me...
How these people are hired and allowed to run franchises despite poor results is just baffling...
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Part III (2022)
Fail me and you will not live to regret it!
... Whaaaat? Really??? But that just means 'I'll kill you' ....!? Is that really the best we could come up with for VADER?! :))
I paused right there to catch my breath :)). I can't for the life of me understand how such a ginormous franchise can push out so much sub par writing ... Oh wait, you mean nobody puts any effort because people will still flock to it no matter how bad the previous 10 movies or games were before?
Well, I suppose we get what we endorse but at least we have the ability to come here and whine about it post factum... The show is one of the worst I've seen so far in the series, perhaps even under Bobba Fett... Everything is bland or cringe down to the detail... Such a pity :( It's almost like they stopped even trying...
The Book of Boba Fett (2021)
Tierd of lazy writing and bad scenarios killing a franchise...
Yet another one for me where I love the cast, I love the franchise but somehow, someone, managed to kill it with their "original" "plain old bad" vision. What a pity :(.
Starting from the first episode they made Fett look weak and boring, like some lost uncle trying to prove he is still cool to teenagers.
Assassins dancing around with shields while poking Boba Fett with mildly electrical sticks which just feels more like some arousal game or Jim Carrey's "A Night at The Roxbury" ... maybe go charge those electron-batons sometime mr. Assassin...
Then back to Boba and Fennec, I proceed to watch some slow motion crap about how the most notorious bounty hunter and assassin are completely dumbfounded by this ridiculous carousel of embarrassment, all the while I keep telling myself "its because he hasn't finished healing!" then immediately realizing I am already compensating for a crap script, making excuses for the ridiculous.
Then we get a half decent episode that culminates with stopping a train like its 1820 in a western, all the while aliens shoot each other from and towards a hypersonic steampunk train that relies on laser-musketeers for defense and protagonists dance around with stick but at least we get to know more about Boba and he gets a brief window of bad ass.
But then, in the next episode, it all goes severely downhill, where again everyone is both strong and weak at the same time, leading to another "grandfather" combat scene that culminates with "team cyber-puberty" saving the day.
Everyone misses shots or is somehow both one of the most notorious characters in the galaxy AND at the same time suffering from mild brain damage.
Most scenes and actions fail to create the picture with Boba Fett building respect and strength from diversity, only to make this the equivalent of some kids series from the Disney channel.
The setting is great, the lore is great, the actors fit the bill for me and despite this they managed to screw it up and I just cant understand why even bother...
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Started great but as modern tradition has it...
... they took it far far away from Star Trek spirit to the point that season 4 is barely watchable and makes a complete mockery of the series. And I'm not even a huge Star Trek fan... They should rebrand to "High-schoolers that look old, in space".
Don't Look Up (2021)
Dear reader, welcome back to Earth!
What worries me most is that this film does not bring something new to the table, it does not propose or expose some kind of new idea or news to the world, yet it seems to spark so much talk. Well... where have you guys been living so far? Welcome back to the world! Look around you lately?
It is quite difficult for me to comprehend that people can become so disconnected from both the world and what is truly important. Looking at you global warming deniers, looking at you religious fanatics, looking at you underfunded science, looking at you pandemic deniers, looking at you lack of will to educate yourself in the age of knowledge, looking at you billionaires, looking at you social media and "influencers", looking at you 4 year term superstar presidents, looking at you dear reader and dear writer.
As a species, most of us are consumed entirely by day to day menial tasks, by our own biological decay and short life span. Running the treadmill like hamsters, amassing possession like immortals just to soon after meet our unavoidable demise (for now).
It's then only a few who can look beyond and plan for the big picture. While in the meantime, for a dishearteningly large proportion of the population worldwide, such people and events become close to "black magic" and "conspiracy", as their brains can't grasp that "hey, there are in fact some people out there that thing about things I don't understand or never knew existed in the first place".
It is this utter lack of education, ever increasing ignorance and generalized greed that are in fact, for decades now, driving us down a path similar or worse than in the movie.
In Don't Look Up, we have a celestial excuse. "The comet cometh". In our current world and life, every single one of us, daily, from top to bottom, decide to stay ignorant or do too little to change policy and awareness and DEMAND leaders, private and public, to start creating that pan generational plan.
Science is underfunded, niche groups are pushing for us to "become dinosaurs", global warming and our proverbial boiling frog, nuclear arsenal growth, division, small countries thinking they matter in the geopolitics of today stepping away from globalization and stepping backward into tribal, inward egocentric goals, all the while we keep floating around in space on our beautiful inherited rock we never really deserved in the first place, yet claimed as human property with right to life and death for all of its inhabitants.
The fact this movie is causing discussion, debate etc. Is on one hand good but on the other, a clear sign that we are utterly effed.
This is not new! This is not satire! You are already living in this world and its scary this is not crystal clear for you!
Locke & Key (2020)
Starts ok, falls flat.
While the starting premise was interesting and it did a good job of getting me to binge watch, the quality of the plot and writing quickly dropped on its head.
The second season is particularly not entertaining bordering just bad. With ridiculous villains that are inconsistent and generally don't make sense, they fail to create any feeling of fear or dread and the entire thing becomes trivial and frankly a bit boring.
Unless you are more simple minded or really new to books and stories of any kind, you will likely not be entertained by this poorly adapted series.
Mary Queen of Scots (2018)
What did I just watch? :(
I mean...it's either history or its not. Please refrain from "book burnings" delivered as movies.
A Discovery of Witches (2018)
Rushed and dull...
I dont really understand how this title can be rated so high frankly...
Story developed at a high pace. Nothing new. Even the not new is kinda boring and unimpressive. It has significant plot holes. The main protagonists turn into some kind of weird teenage lovers. The powers are meh. All "Creatures" are totally unimpressive. They've portrayed vampires as some sort of scavenging weaklings that just happen to be rich... but sometimes move fast... The story forces itself upon you in a similar way some of the protagonists in the series force themselves on the side characters....
Its really overall a watered down romantic flick.... 8.1 ??? really? I wonder if these are real votes to be honest....
Raised by Wolves (2020)
Oh pitty.... :(
This started SO well.... it progressed decently and then you just decided to kick the damn thing in the face... The ending and outcome was ridiculous...! Did the previous writer leave the planet? Was he ill or out out of office and someone decided to "just have a crack at it"? Its like two different series if you compare the first half and the second, building into a complete cringe festival!
Have y'all just flipped coins about what you want the series to achieve and say after every episode??
Also, personally? I get it ... its hard to let go of Alien and apparently its not possible to do a good movie without referencing SOMETHING about it but seriously... give me a break! You tried Prometheus... also started well then basically turned into an auto tuned fart with space idiots running in lines and taking masks off and basically just taking 15 different SCI FI ideas and cramming them into one thing until frankly it left you wondering what the hell did it try to achieve other than "explain for everyone how ALIEN happened. What is the damn point of wasting 60% of the time and budget for everyone just to quickly sketch an ending in crayon on it! I understand there is some overarching story you are trying to build into this masterpiece but maybe just do 1-2 movies where you just kinda drop that idea? huh? can we?
Stop teasing...! I was SO happy we finally get a GOOD Sci Fi as those are so rare :(...
Oh well ... I guess I'm still rating this high so at least we might get a 2nd season and then be done with it... Good luck saving that "ingenious" writing in the next one.
Star Trek: Lower Decks (2020)
Its actually quite ok ...
Frankly, the whole idea kinda rings well with me personally.
The show is supposed to address the "every day life" of "the other folk" that are living and working on a star-ship, in a comic fashion similar to other shows out there like Futurama, American Dad, Final Space, etc. Really don't get all the hate... It's a light animated series that does its own thing while based on Star Trek as frame reference.
If you liked shows such as the ones mentioned above, you might just like this one as well, for what it is, as opposed to all other opinions that seem to have expected a Star Trek "the cartoon" series....
The Expanse: Jetsam (2019)
Finally!
I paused the show to come here and say how finally I find the show where on a certain scene you really feel like a punch is in order and the show delivers said punch. And that was great! :D
One of the best SciFi out there. Give it a few episodes and it will grow on you.Good attention to details as well (FINALLY! :) ).
The I-Land (2019)
Find your way back !
Several people are prisoners of a bad script and stupid dialogue on an island.
Find your way back ... to the previous page and forget this ever happened...
Upgrade (2018)
A lot better than I expected
It really not something new but at the same time it does everything SO much better than tons of other more pretentious similar movies out there. Worth a watch if you like the genre.
American Dad! (2005)
American Dad > Family Guy
I for one value American Dad as a show and consider it to be far superior to Family Guy both in overall content and in several specific areas such as characters, dialogs, jokes and so on. To me personally Family Guy lost it's way somewhere after season 5. On the other hand I am yet to find an episode of American Dad to be rushed, shallow or boring. I gladly recommend this show to most people who ask me about it or that I know would enjoy this type of entertainment.
Even though it doesn't seem to bring anything "new" to the genre, it does however excel in being particularly well designed as episodes and sticking to their character's personalities and even as subjective as humor may be, much better "funny stuff", in contrast to a much poorer overall package Family Guy has brought to the table in the past several seasons (maybe with the exception of Brian and Stewie).
Also, Roger! ('nuff said)
Being original and new does not always imply being any good and at the same time, certain things become iconic for being what they are and not for trying to be something else.
