Bonnie and Clyde (1967)
1967 controversy
i recall the controversy surrounding this film and revisited it to understand the modern claim "revolutionary," especially since I don't believe beatty's work is deserving of Kennedy Lifetime Award status. this is an entertaining movie. The heroes are beautiful and that was a major controversy since the real Bonnie and Clyde were as ugly as their sins. probably the real Bonnie and Clyde would't recognize the scenery because the cameras make it look more beautiful though the banks and homes look real and may very well be. oh yes, the cars were in mint condition - until our heroes and the law get through with them . the social critics of the era said it was terrible to make these criminals appealing. BUT were those critics rooting for Cagney, Bogart and company to get killed ? Well...sometimes. BUt we don't for these two. I'm not sure why. Maybe its because Clyde isn't a 1930's tough guy. Yeah, I'm sure that's it. He's more of a scared bunny, with a temper who blames others for his errors and fully enjoying the notoriety of his actions. But are you really going to blame Warren Beatty ? Yeah, the critics said the movie was not real life. DUH Its a movie ! lol I was glad I snuck off to the theater to see it. Want reality ? try the photo session early in the movie. The poem is real, probably written by a journalist . Like many of the outlaws in the dust bowl days, bank robbers enjoyed a certain esteem among the poor folk. incidentally Gene Hackman fans, this movie brought him some major attention .
Pippin: His Life and Times (1982)
entertaining- touching- honest -and yes-sexy
here in the summary you have all of the elements for why i give this stage play an 8. probably it does not get a higher rating because i fail to understand why the author uses Charlemagne, his first born, Pippen to get where the go. maybe you have to read the book for that.Sometimes I think this play didn't know where it wanted to go. It appeared to be historical course with Chita Rivera, Pippin's mom pushing the second son to the king's attention. Then it appeared to address the futility, foolhardiness and carnage of war . Then we have the sex orgy. I wonder if this was a controversial play when it first appeared (60's ?} Even today, the anti-church line would be sure to attract the wrath of some section in the religious right And yet, this play "magically" (you'll See why I use quote if you watch) succeeds as a coming-of- age tale. Incidentally, I saw "Bonnie And Clyde" first; and believe it or nor - the both relate ! Pippin, however, realizes what is truly important.
The Piano Lesson (1995)
rate 7 this is above average PLAY
i emphasize Play because it seems that earlier commentators think Dutton over emotes. all the actors are convincing. this is not to say that all Afro-Americans always acted this way in the 30's. Indeed some act this way today when they feel comfortable . her uncle probably wouldn't be singing in the house except that he felt comfortable singing with these guys around a bottle of whiskey. to say this is merely a ghost story is to miss the point. this like A Raisen In The Sun where the man sees an opportunity to finally own a piece of the rock and a member of his family will not part with the means to acquire it. Also, there is quite a lot more going on here if you watch the play a second time, as i did.
