The Secret Life of Bees (2008)
Wonderful Hollywood performers waste their talents in this god-awful dud
There are dozens of really great movies that have been made. Sadly, this is NOT one of them. For one, this movie suffers from the usual and overused "abusive father and kind-hearted gentle mother who wouldn't hurt a fly" cliché,a hateful cliché that's been spreading like wildfire over the decades.
Another thing that ruined this movie for me was the terrible over-acting done by the performers. As usual, the man overdid his anger and the woman overdid her panicked terrified screaming,a combo that would give ANY person a terrible migraine.
A lot of wonderful Hollywood performers wasted their talents in this god-awful,migraine inducing dud. Were they so desperate for money that they agreed to embarrass themselves in this so called "movie"? Sadly, yes.I got the feeling that this movie was made just to make the director richer.
I do NOT recommend this "movie" to ANYONE. Instead,go watch a REAL movie like "Casablanca" or " Brokeback mountain" or even a W.C. Fields movie-these are wonderful alternatives to "Sewcret Life of Bees".
Jem (1985)
One of the WORST cartoons of the 1980s...
The 1980s had some really good cartoons: "Biskitts"..."My Little Pony"..."Tailspin"...unfortunately,"Jem" was not amongst them."Jem" suffers from cheap animation,no plots, and horrible singing that sounds like fingernails on a chalkboard. "Jem" was even guilty of jumping onto the morals bandwagon;while cartoons like "She-Ra" actually gave good morals,"Jem" simply plagiarized the morals that other cartoons featured and made complete messes of the morals by changing words around. "Jem" even tried to impress people by jumping onto the anti-drug bandwagon and tried to act smart by showing an anti-drug episode. The result? A badly made episode that was rushed and had stolen ideas from other anti-drug cartoons and skewed those ideas. In fact,ALL the episodes were rushed and had no plots(anyone remember the migraine inducing episode that had a bunch of untalented jazz artists?).
Celebrities were cruelly mocked and disgraced on this series;great celebrities like Stevie Wonder,Mick Jagger,Tina Turner and even Joan Rivers were made to look absolutely foolish on the series. And not once did the show's staff publicly apologize to these celebrities for embarrassing them on TV. Did this show REALLY need to drag on and on for 3-4 whole seasons? No. The air time that was wasted on "Jem" could've been used to show cartoon classics like "Woody Woodpecker","Pink Panther" or "Looney Toons".
The hair colors and makeup made peoples' eyes bleed;it is obvious the creators of this show decided to give the characters anime hair colors for who knows what odd reason.I really hate to say this, but watching" Billy and Mandy" is 100 times better than watching "Jem".
So,if you want to watch a great video or DVD,do NOT waste your money on "Jem". Get "Bugs Bunny" or "Simpsons" instead.
Hong Kong Phooey (1974)
A great cartoon classic!
"Hong Kong Phooey" is one of the greatest cartoons ever made! Like "Sailor Moon","Duck Tales" and 'Pokemon",this cartoon was worth watching! These days, kids have cartoons that are plot less, annoying, worthless and animated VERY cheaply(like "Billy and Mandy" and "Codename Kids Next Door"). "Hong Kong Phooey" does not rely on snot jokes, farting, puking or unfunny material that the garbage cartoons of today(like "Squirrel Boy","Ed,Edd and Eddy" and "Billy and Mandy") shove down kids' throats. If you want your kids to see what REAL cartoons are, just show them tapes of "Hong Kong Phooey"(along with "Pokemon" and "House of Mouse" and "Lilo & Stitch " series) and watch their faces light up!
The Burning Bed (1984)
A real mess of a movie
This movie has so many faults in it,I don't even know where to begin. The biggest fault is the overused "Abusive husband/abusive father" plot that many other types of media are guilty of(Days of our lives.."Enough"...many of the man-hating programming on Life/Womens' Entertainment Network, etc). A good way to keep teaching children the lie that all fathers are mean, cruel and abusive and that all mothers are good, kind and gentle. This movie meant to deliver a powerful message, but fell flat on its face while screwing facts up horribly.
The name" Mickey" for an abusive man? Could the writers not think of a name that doesn't sound like something you'd name a lovable dopey dog? That's like naming a gentle and very shy woman "Butch". Apparently, the writers were bored out of their skulls and decided to slap a random name on an abusive man. They might as well named the abusive man "Dizzy" or "Buster"8rolls eyes* There are a lot more sensible names out there, like "Evan",for example. But no. The writers decided to not use their heads and slap the name "Mickey" on the guy.
If you read the facts about abusive relationships on the internet, you'd find that women are the abusive aggressor in most domestic violence cases. Don't believe what people tell you about battered women;most of it isn't even true, from what I researched and found out. If you listen to these kinds of people, then you might as well believe people if they tell you that your nose will explode any second now.
Avoid movies like "Burning Bed" and "Enough",and go watch a REAL movie like " Born Free" or "Mommie Dearest".
The Morning After (1986)
This movie stereotypes alcoholics
I have an alcoholic cousin,an alcoholic uncle and an alcoholic brother-in-law,and none of them act in the disgraceful, stereotyped manner that Jane Fonda's character acted in.This movie leads you to believe that all alcoholics do is pass out or sob and cry because "they need a drink and cannot get one."This is where the director messed up big-time-the director clearly did not bother to research what an alcholic really is,but decided to go ahead and slap a label on all alcoholics-a label that says"We alcoholics are all alike-we cry whenever we need a drink and cannot get one."With the way Fonda cried in the movie,I thought"Did she lose a loved one?" I was angered and disappointed to hear her say that she needed booze while she was sobbing sadly.
Fona and the other actors must of been REALLY desperate for money if they had to embarrass themselves and smear their own names in this disaster of a movie. This movie only stereotypes alcoholics and teaches people that all alcoholics are all alike.Skip this movie-it only gives alcoholics a bad name.
