The Fastest Woman on Earth (2022)
A complicated hero
This documentary is a snapshot of Jessi's life. What makes me want to show this film to my daughter is Jessi's determination to be the best. Not the fastest woman, she was just trying to be the fastest person on earth.
Juxtaposed with that was her reality of being a women and the need to have a family.
Jessi was, as many of our heros, and also her own hero, a complicated personality. Trying to fit a personal life into her professional life was clearly a difficult challenge. The documentary includes a mini-documentary inside about one of Jessi's heros and how her professional and personal life fell apart. Jessi's public bubbling personality is shown but balanced with the focus she could muster under difficult and dangerous conditions, and her vulnerable moments, such as touching the car while praying.
Before I saw this film, I was in some way hoping that Jessi's last run's would not be shown from in-car footage, but ultimately the footage was handled with care and respect, and I am glad they included it in such a manner.
I don't know if I saw something I wanted to see, but it was as if the last couple of runs, her frown was deeper and she was more serious about the goal.
The reality is that everyone, no matter their gender or skill level, struggles with these personal battles, but that these struggles do not need to stop us from reaching our goals.
Murderville (2022)
Play along, and don't be so serious
I understand why people find this series silly, but I also do not understand. This is a fun series overall, and I enjoyed playing along, trying to guess Whodunnit. Some of the characters were distracting, and poorly executed but they were mostly recurring. I enjoyed Sharon Stone's and Ken Jeong's performances especially, for different reasons. Once or twice the victims also broke character after being tormented by someone which was great fun to spot.
Stowaway (2021)
In space, no one can hear you yawn
The first hour-and-a-half was moving very slowly, while the soundtrack didn't help much to engage the viewer. If you can survive the first 3/4 of the movie, the best part is coming.
I never invested in anyone on the ship except maybe Michael. Maybe. With such excellent actors this movie missed out on an opportunity to develop the Commander, the Biologist and the Doctor.
Anna really tried with what they gave her though.
Overall, I've got questions. So many questions. Why would they not tether onto anything? Why is nothing tethered to them? Apollo 13 Made CO2 scrubbers from duct tape and stuff: no duct tape on this behemoth? Why does mission control not warn them of the solar flare timeously? But the first 3/4 of the movie bored me too much to bother finding out.
I'm typing this with 18 minutes remaining, and at least now the story and characters are developing. At least Zoey is closing some arc.
The set design is awesome though. It looks very realistic inside the craft. I love the detail of the anchors to strap everything down, here in South Africa we call it Cargotracks. I also believe the physics sort of check out, the gas leaking condensation on the pipes and gauge was a notable event for me.
My recommendation is to only watch this if you are a space nerd.
