The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
As perfect as a horror series can get
The one thing that amazed me the most is that the series never uses any of the regular tropes of the horror genre. They managed to create a ridiculously beautiful and exceptionally scary series without using jump-scares! That deserves phrase. It is not a mean feat to pull off. It is brilliantly written, directed, edited, acted and my god the art direction and cinematography is exceptional. I would have given it a perfect 10, had it not been for certain dialogues that are too bookish and dramatic for the screen.
The King and the Commissioner (2012)
It's so bad, it's good!
I have watched this movie multiple times. When ever I am in a mood for some good for nothing movie, this is my first choice. I love this movie because, they didn't get one thing wrong, they managed to get everything wrong. From the script to dialogues, casting, acting, costumes, makeup, lighting, editing, cinematography, direction, everything was exceptionally bad. That is no small achievement and deserves an award! It also successfully managed to destroy two good characters from two great movies. An elephant can fall through plot holes. The amount of logical flaws the movie has would make one wonder, what were they smoking. One scene in particular, the gym fight scene, stands out in my mind. Joseph Alex had a suspicion on a couple of cops (by the way, the evidence was very clear, so it shouldn't have been just a suspicion to begin with), didn't investigate, ask questions, nothing, instead he walks into a police gym and start beating cops up. No cop seems to be interested in holding him back, they just join the fight. Then Bharatchandran, who himself is a cop, walk in to the gym and the other cops start fighting him too. Really filmmakers? For all they know, he could be just another cop there to train. But no. Anyways, it is an exceptionally funny movie to watch, because it is dumb beyond wits. Also, at 190 minutes, it is 190 minutes too long. Try it.
Ong-Bak (2003)
Great fight sequences make it a worth watch
What can one say about this movie? You do not go to a Tony Jaa movie expecting thought provoking content or great acting. In these two department the movie is barely passable. What you get a plenty are exceptionally well choreographed martial art set pieces. The action scenes is precisely why one would go for it and it would give you plenty. They showcase the agility of Jaa as a martial artist and in Ong-bak, he is on top of his game. I found the movie to be a difficult watch once the action sequences pass.
Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag (2007)
Unforgivably bad
This is one of those occasions where I wish IMDb had a negative rating option. I still remember being awestruck after watching Sholay as a child. Even today, when I watch that movie, I am dumbstruck by the production value and the performances. It is one movie that has successfully stood the test of time. There was truly no reason to remake it.
But, when I heard RGV is remaking the movie and actors like Mohanlal, Amitabh Bachachan, and Ajay Devgn is going to be involved, my expectation was sky high. Even though I had the question 'why' stuck in my head. I went and watched it on the first day and it was one of the most painful two and a half hours that I have ever had. I couldn't believe that a director of RGV's caliber could bring out a monstrosity like it.
The movie was badly written, the acting was over the top, the reworked script and dialogues were pathetic. The camera angles were mostly off and the colour scheme annoying, to say the least. Editing was shoddy. Most importantly, the movie lacked the charisma, charm and life that made the original such a good movie.
If I am to pick just one thing that I found the most outrageous with the movie, that would be RGV's muse Priyanka Kothari. It is said that, as an actor, you are as good as the person you are acting against. If that's the best he can do acting against the likes of Mohanlal and Ajay Devgn, you don't deserve to be called an actor. Every scene with her was beyond disastrous. And to think that she did the role that Hema Malini did in the original, pains me immensely.
Over all, there is not a single thing that worked with the movie. It is a disgrace.
Deadpool 2 (2018)
An improvement on its fabulous predecessor
I went to the theater without much expectations. Because I believed that the first movie worked because of its novelty and there is nothing remaining for a second outing. But, I ended up enjoying Deadpool 2 much more than the first one. To begin with, the increased budget showed and the resultant improvement in CGI was really good. While the first movie just depended on its lead's sense of humor and a few action set pieces, the second movie felt more holistic in its emotions. It was pleasing to see that. The story as a whole was more rounded than that of the first movie.
But, there were areas that I felt needed more attention. A major one is character development. There where a lot more characters introduced, but barely developed. What was worse what what they did with the characters from the first movie. Blind Al barely had any screen-time and was not at all developed. I felt particularly sad about the way they worked Negasonic Teenage Warhead. The character was brilliant and one of my favorites from the first movie. But, she is completely sidelined in this one. Colossus had a meatier role though.
Overall, it's a rather enjoyable movie. Feels a bit like a set up for X-Force, but still stands on its own.
Most importantly, it has the best mid-credit scenes I have ever seen.
The Great Father (2017)
A pathetic attempt on a subject that serious!
I don't have words to explain the rage I had when I watched this movie. It is dealing with a story that deserves some level of restraint and overall seriousness. The fancy jackets, vehicles, specs and music took priority over the content. A girl in her early teens got raped and the father is complaining that she is no longer smiling like she used to? The parents are telling her that nothing happened to her? A psychologist telling her to give consideration to her parent's feelings, while not once helping her in dealing with her feelings? What world are these people from? It is a pathetic excuse for a movie and nothing more.
Lethal Weapon (2016)
A Great Remake
The Lethal Weapon movies are amongst my favourite buddy cop movies. I can unashamedly say that I even loved the fourth part, which was not really well received by the fans. And after seeing the TV guys massacre the likes of Knight Rider and Minority Report, I wasn't actually looking forward to this one. Especially after watching the trailer, I was certain this one is up to no good.
Then, I got around watching it. I am damn impressed, I must say. Often, when a movie or an old TV series is rebooted, they either won't be able to match the tone of the original one or they are too old for the new audience to relate to. But, the creators of this Lethal Weapon seems to have nailed it. It has got the quirky humour the original had and the relationship between all the characters and the character development, in particular, seems to be spot on.
The characters I have come to love the most are Dr. Maureen Cahill, the police department's psychologist, Trish Murtaugh, Det. Murtaugh's wife, Captain Brooks Avery, the Commanding Officer of Robbery-Homicide Division, and Leo Getz, the ambulance-chasing attorney. Getz, in particular, is very different from the original character played by Joe Pesci, but it is equally well done.
Bottomline, I loved this version and I am waiting for the second season.
Bull (2016)
It grows on you
I loved the trailer and decided to catch it as soon as it came out. I ended the first episode disappointed as there was little character development or excitement. From the second episode onward, there was a much harder emphasis on character development and it has worked wonders for the show. As the season progressed, I found myself rather absorbed by the characters and the chemistry between them. Particularly, Dr Bull and his team. It was brilliant to watch. Even though the plot is more in the unbelievable territory most of the time, the characters and their relationships and the great one liners make it a worthy watch. Afterall, those were the things that made the three CSIs and the many NCISs work. Michael Weatherly is practically the same as he was in NCIS and I think for this character, that's exactly what was needed. I loved the first season to a certain extent and am looking forward to the second season. If the quality of the writing does not considerably improve, I believe we won't be getting a season three. Which would be sad.
Maheshinte Prathikaaram (2016)
One of the best Malayalam movies ever
My review may seem hyperbolic, but trust me, it is not. In my book, Maheshinte Prathikaram, is one of the greatest Malayalam movies ever made. The characters live and breathe. The realism in even the smallest of things, like Mahesh cleaning his slippers in the beginning or his daily routine or every single relationships in the movie, is mind- boggling. The attention to detail is scary. Dialogues are original, yet close to life. The screenplay is the centerpiece, it simply is marvelous, a kudos to the writer. The directing was spotless. Cinematography was flawless. The casting was picture perfect, and Fahad once again proves, he is one young actor to reckon with.
The movie never tries hard enough to do anything, it just simply and brilliantly does what it means to do.
Close Range (2015)
Not worth the time
The movie has nothing that deserves phrase. Bad direction, no screenplay, shoddy acting. A lot of shooting, but they are mostly ridiculous and hard to enjoy. Apart from a couple of hand to hand combat there is nothing in it that even deserves a mention.
The plot is so wafer-thin and implausible. Now, I am not saying implausibility is what makes it bad, no. It is just that most of what's happening in the movie is so ridiculously stupid that you will have a hard time digesting it. The bad guys are dumber than a box of rocks. Their actions or their methods make no sense to anyone with half a brain.
Now, if it was a comedy or a spoof it would have worked. But this one lacks the humor to be a spoof or the audacity to be an action flick. It's dumb, pale and boring.
Kôkaku kidôtai (1995)
Extraordinary
One of the best movies I have ever scene. The philosophical and existential dilemma the main character is going through in the movie is superbly developed. The way the whole plot unravels and the lack of inhibition shown in portraying nudity was a refreshing change. All the main characters are well developed and rounded. The things that fascinated me the most were the philosophical undertones, background score/songs and the city.
The background score and songs bring in a haunted feel to the whole movie. A sort of savoury depressing, haunted feel. That gelled very well with the overall feel of the movie. It also complimented the city the movie is set in. I would say the city is one of the major characters in the movie. It's enormous, old, decaying, alive and filthy. It is a representative of the ugly face of the world, that everyone would rather ignore but it refuses to go away. The city is so overwhelming that at times you even start smelling it. I have rarely come across movies, forget anime, that have used its surrounding to this much effect.
An amazing film, a must watch.
Zombie Ninjas vs Black Ops (2015)
Awful - In one word
The title 'Zombie Ninja vs Black Ops' itself screams that nothing good will come from it. But the title is so intriguing that I had to watch it. I approached it with the thought that it is going to be a bad movie. Even with that attitude I came out very disappointed.Even very bad movies will have moments that you might actually enjoy. Not this one. It had not even a single scene that's worth remembering or to keep you engaged.
The beings in the movie, the so called Zombie Ninjas, doesn't have any of the characteristics of either zombies or ninjas. The direction is shoddy at best. The action sequences are wasted with bad camera angles and too many edits. The dialogues are bad and the acting is even worse.
It has far less action scenes for a movie in it's genre. It is a wannabe action flick at best. The theme had the potential to being in a lot of action, but all of that potential is wasted in this. The whole movie is a ginormous waste of opportunity.Better to skip this one.
Yakshi Faithfully Yours (2012)
Laughably Bad
I started watching the movie and I got hooked to it very early on, not because it's any good but because it's so bad that you can enjoy it for that. The acting, or the lack of it, is beyond pathetic. Most of the actors tries too much while others do too little. Some actors, like the one who plays the character Jithu, often refrains from lifting his head or even making eye contact with other characters in the movie. Story is practically nonexistent. Dialogues are naive and childish at times, for example - at the end of the movie the Yakshi breaks the forth wall and talks directly to the audience saying she will come to our homes every night to see us. I understand what she meant by that, but I will have to say if the writer was trying to bring in a sense of insecurity among the audience and it was funny due to it's double meaning. The dialogue delivery has to be the part that should take the cake, it is mechanical and laughable. All put together, this movie is so bad that it's good. Don't watch it alone, not because you will be scared but the movie deserves to be trashed, so watch it with friends over a local rum and have a blast trashing it.
