X (2022)
Retro Gore with heart felt storyline and A+ Acting
Imagine Tobe Hooper had a bigger budget and better actors to direct for Texas Chainsaw Massacre.....
X is a silly movie with a silly plot that succeeds despite its parameters.
Five ambitious adult fiim makers travel to a rental property in Texas to make a direct to video x-rated movie for the burgeoning home video business of the late 70s and 80s.
They ultimately run into a decades long murderous plot by the husband and wife who own the property.
The acting is superb as well as creating a genuinely touching story of the elderly couple who run the rental property.
I would give an 8 out of 10 if I felt compelled to watch it again, but I don't. That being said, it was good entertainment.
Prey (2022)
Fun low budget addition to the Predator universe
This movie is a bare bones fast paced take on the alien hunter known as The Predator. It takes place about 300 years ago in the Comanche territory. The Predator is dropped off per his usual method to hunt, kill and collect trophies of the biggest perceived threats and adversaries of the time.
I didn't love it, but I did like it alot. A lot of creative references to the original film with a few cool twists. At only about an hour and twenty minutes, it uses that time wisely to develop characters and create tension. Lots of cool fight scenes too!!
Highly recommend to any die hard Predator fans!!
The Black Phone (2021)
Pays homage to serial killer movies old and new
Nice little horror movie set in 1978 Colorado. A series of missing children has local police baffled while "The Grabber" played by Ethan Hawke continues his reign of terror, snatching young boys from the streets.
The movie mostly revolves around the close relationship of a brother who struggles with conflict and his sister who has psychic visions of The Grabber.
Pretty good character development and decent but predictable plot.
The thing I enjoyed most about the film were the homages to other well known serial killer movies. Sinister and IT to name a couple and a plot twist at the end that was ripped right off the pages of Silence of The Lambs.
Good summer scary movie!! Enjoy.
Shining Girls (2022)
Intricate Story. Wagner Moura's acting carries the series.
The story line in Shining Girls is pretty convoluted, you can't step away from this show or you'll miss something. Some reviews are calling it slow paced, I would argue the problem is there's too much info to pack in to even an 8 season show, so it's kinda mind numbing and confusing at times. But, stay with it I think the payoff will be pretty decent.
Wagner Moura makes hanging with Shining Girls a lot easier. His performance is excellent. I decided to watch because I'm a fan of Moss, but her doe eyed sympathetic routine is getting old. She's done this type of role already.
From: Oh, the Places We'll Go (2022)
Disappointing
The show wastes too much time on personal relationships within the town. I can see doing that for the first few episodes, but zzzzzzz already. I actually fast forward through those parts and have never felt like I missed something important.
I would be surprised if this series gets renewed, which is unfortunate because it would be cool to know what is going on.
Severance: The We We Are (2022)
Suspense Suspense and Uhhhhhhh Suspense
Man, I haven't been in that much suspense watching a movie since the scene in Silence of the Lambs where Buffalo Bill turned the lights off in the basement and slipped on his night vision glasses.
The forty minute runtime felt like ten. This series just keeps wowing me with its originality. Full of fresh ideas and storytelling .
A+++
Severance: What's for Dinner? (2022)
Huge Tease
Another great episode with many surprises and twists. With only one episode left this season I had hoped more would be revealed. Episode 9 should be a doozy!! Cant wait......
Chapelwaite: The Keeper (2021)
Amazing emotional ending!!
Completely unexpected ending. No spoilers here, but I will say that this was an amazing ending. Great storytelling of a great storytellers story. The writers deserve kudos!!
Malignant (2021)
The Dark Half meets The eyes of Laura Mars
Im showing my age by the references in my headline, but if you watch the movie and you're my age(52) and you love horror, then you'll get it.
This film is a giant homage to many generations of horror films. Lots of cool references and plot lines that you've seen a thousand times, lots of smart people doing dumb things. My personal favorite is not turning a light on when you here something scary in the next room. RME hard
The twists are decent, but were pretty easy to figure out for a jaded horror fan like myself. Overall fun watch. I recommend seeing it.
No Sudden Move (2021)
The return of Bill Duke
I just love Bill Duke. Anyway, the movie is pretty darn good. Deception, revenge and redemption. All good qualities for a gangster/big industry corruption movie. Lots of twists and great performances from a star packed cast. Definitely recommend.
Underwater (2020)
Should be called Deep Star Sux
If you don't get the reference, it's ok. You probably weren't around during the string of underwater monster movies of 1989/90.
The four stars I gave it are for the special effects etc. Otherwise this is pretty much garbage, especially the dialogue! Must not be too hard to get a writing job these days. It's to bad too, because it has a pretty decent cast. The assumption is they shot their wad on paying the stars and spent the rest on effects?
I would avoid this one unless you're into flat chested girls with boy haircuts.
Mean Man: The Story of Chris Holmes (2021)
Where's the story?
Chris Holmes life is probably a pretty interesting story, unfortunately you're not going to learn all that much in this documentary. What you get instead is a promotional video for his new band, who pretty much suck, sorry. Otherwise we are shown a guy who had genuine talent, but no business sense. They parade a bunch of other semi successful musicians, roadies, friends and fans from WASPs heyday to tell you what a sweet great guy he is, but it's pretty easy to read between the lines. It's pretty obvious to me Holmes only has himself and his addictions and bad behavior to blame for where he is today and that part of his story I would be interested to hear more about.
Eraserhead (1977)
Uhhhh yeahhhhh
Self indulgent nonsense. It's not a huge mystery as to what this film is about, but to see how boring and devoid of dialogue the director can tell it.
The Invisible Man (2020)
Proof that Moss can carry a weak story.
This movie was about 30 minutes too long and pretty much every twist was super predictable. That being said, if you're a fan of Elisabeth Moss which I am, then you will most likely enjoy it even at its 2 plus hour runtime. Moss has the ability to make this otherwise cookie cutter story watchable.
The VVitch: A New-England Folktale (2015)
Great movie(watch with subtitles)
People want realism in movies, then complain when a movie is as accurate a depiction of its time frame as it can be. As stated in my headline, I highly recommend watching with subtitles. You will understand alot better if you do.
This is just a well made story about a deeply religious family who after being banished from thier colony falls apart due to tragic events both natural and supernatural.
