Silo (2023– )
Kinda sexist, but ok
21 August 2023
Silo has a solid plot and cast, but suffers from some overt gender discrimination. There's a pretty simple test we can apply to this one: swap the gender of all the characters. Still cool? Nope? Ok then, it's not ready for release. Every single strong, brave and competent character with a functional moral compass is played by one gender, and all the weak, morally bankrupt, and cruel characters are from the other gender. This is apparently all OK though, because the men are the ones who are weak and evil. Apparently the way we get equality is by taking turns at discrimination. I expect better from modern writing than this, and I hope that others do too.

Archer (2009–2023)
Season 13 is a trainwreck
1 November 2022
A once brilliant and provocative show could now be slotted into any family friendly programming on any channel. Not a single joke in season 13 even made me smile. Not once. This cult of anti humour, please let's not offend anyone anywhere by being too funny nonsense has robbed FX of one of the best shows it ever had. What we have now is a G rated Hallmark romcom sitcom masquerading as Archer. Really seems like it should have stopped after season 12. It would have taken a lot to recover from the loss of Jessica Walters, but it seems like the show wants to be buried along side her. Rest in piece.

Absolute trash.

They repeat what little content they have at least a dozen times, and have nothing new to present. Every tiny piece of circumstantial evidence known from before is presented like they found a smoking gun on a grassy knoll. Their "super computer" is somehow not in the cloud and also makes the same spin up sound as a hard disk from the 90s. The camera cannot stop moving, cutting and zooming to pointless dramatic sound effects. The 5 episodes could have been presented in about 10 minutes

No context
12 November 2020
I just don't understand what is up with these postmodern documentaries. I get idea that the film makers want to let the subjects speak for themselves, but sometimes people watch a documentary to learn something new. Learning is impossible here because it doesn't provide any history, text, infographics or summaries. It's just people talking. They could be credible. Truthful. Or complete liars. It's up to the audience to decide. Except we are given no information to do this with. This film is a waste of time that will leave you with nothing more than a notion of how the different sides of this conflict "feel".

Honeyland (2019)
Nothing. Happens.
10 November 2020
No narrator. No context. No story. No point.

I have absolutely no idea what people are reviewing here. There are some farmers. One makes honey. One has some cows. Then another makes honey too. One time there was a market. And a banana. A kid got stung by a bee. 10/10

Earthlings (2005)
Worthy cause, delivered terribly
5 January 2014
While I do strongly believe that we need to make serious changes to our relationship with the other living creatures on this planet, I cannot respect any argument that is constructed with such a remarkable disregard for logic. The reckless abandon with which the narrative was constructed was far more shocking than any of the images presented, and served only to undermine this important message and lead the viewer to question the veracity of content that had previously been accepted as truth.

The most offensive chapter for me was the 'investigation' of animal use in science. The narrative rests upon the notion that anyone who is not a vegan activist is complicit in holocaust-level cruelty, and that we tolerate this complicity for "trivial and pointless" gains. Cancer, HIV/AIDS, Heart Disease/Stroke, Diabetes, Parkinson's Disease, Hepatitis C, Birth Defects, Epilepsy, Bio-terrorism victims, Spinal Cord Injuries and Cystic Fibrosis are all significantly more treatable as a direct result of scientific research involving animals. According to the filmmakers these improvements to the human condition are "trivial and pointless". Shame on them. Shame on anyone who tolerates such willful stupidity. Perhaps one day our scientists will invent a time machine so you can go back to the dark ages - it's clearly where you would like our civilisation to remain.
