"If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth."

Adult Anime
57 titles |
Public
This was compiled from recommendations of friends and strangers of various anime series/movies that deal with adult/mature themes beyond the popular Shonen or Shoujo stuff.
The goal was to basically find what could be considered The Sopranos or Mad Men of anime, or at least Breaking Bad.
In retrospect, it was a dumb idea, these are not comparable mediums, which is why live action adaptations of anime fail all the time.
But the suggested names in this list is probably as you would get to, say, Sherlock or Firefly, a well written story with decent production value, told in a way that respects the viewer and aims to not just delight the viewer but also make him think, empathize, and maybe sob a little.
I took the liberty to rank the suggestions based on how much they fit the profile (according to me, an ignorant idiot), the lower a show is, the less it matches the profile. But ultimately they all fit the profile, more than anything else out there.
I've put the movies on the bottom of the list, for no reason in particular, and I've added comments from the suggestors (in bold), with any interesting related material mentioned. I've also commented on the few I've seen from this list (not in bold).

The Little Death (2014)
Excellent Writing

This movie really exceeded all my expectations. I was expecting lewd humour and Viagra jokes, what I saw was far from that. The movie is about sexual deviations and fantasies and how it affects relationships, and it looks at that subject with in a lighthearted way, but never over the top.
This movie wouldn't have worked without the excellent writing and directing of Josh Lawson, each time something happens or a character appears, I think to myself "That's what's gonna probably happen", but Lawson surprises me every time I thought that. The stories were well written and how they all come together in the end was brilliant.
This was my first experience with Australian comedy, and I will surely watch more of it in the future after this movie.
