Daltry Calhoun (2005)
A pleasant surprise; heartwarming and wholesome in the vein of "My Girl".
Going into "Daltry Calhoun", I really didn't know what to expect. I've been a long time fan of it's star, the likable Johnny Knoxville, and knew it was something of a comedy, but that was about it. I surely wasn't expecting the type of movie that I got, but it was by no means a let down either. "Daltry Calhoun", While named after Knoxville's character, is actually more the coming of age story of Calhoun's daughter, June, as she's reunited with her father. The story is told from her point of view and is very pleasant, heartwarming and damn near a "family" type of film, save for a bit of bad language (probably the only time you'll hear "family" describing a film with Quentin Tarantino's name on the cover). It almost reminded me of a more contemporary and far less cheesy version of "My Girl", which will leave most of it's audience going "awww." as oppose to "haha". But for the kind of movie it was, a light sentimental comedy, I found it quite enjoyable.
Last Days (2005)
A tedious, pretentious, insulting waste of time
This is really one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
There's really no "movie" to speak of here. The fact that Van Sant took credit for both "writing" and "editing" this, is laughable, because there seems to be little, if any, of either of those things involved. This is the only film I can think of that you could watch in fast-forward, and not only not miss anything, but still wonder why the shots are so tediously long. Nothing of consequence really happens in this film (at all) making it perfect for worry-free bathroom breaks. Micheal Pitt's commendable performance is wasted, as it appears as if we are watching the material that was edited out of a good movie. It makes one wonder why the filmmaker believes that watching 15 minutes of the Cobainesque "Blake" wandering aimlessly around a forest, mumbling to himself is more effective than, say, 1 minute. The vast majority of supporting characters serve no purpose and any plot, story or character development is more or less left up to the imagination of the viewer. Watching this movie is like watching a screen saver for an hour and a half, hoping eventually something interesting will pop up, making it worth while. But it never does.
