A trip down nostalgia lane
8 June 2012
Just watched this film, must have been at least fifteen years since i last saw it. Wow. didn't realise how terrible it was... but somehow the nostalgia made up for it. There is much that sucks about this film which will escape the kids (at least for me, kids raised on transformers may laugh at it for the wrong reasons) but Richard Pryor adds some redeeming comedy to it to make it a good film for all the family, if Richard Pryor is not your sort of thing you can always pick out the sometimes laughable errors to have your fun with, for me the nostalgia and Richard Pryor kept me there until the end and for this I would give it a 7, but if these doesn't appeal to you the film is more accurately a 4 or 5, 2 or 3 for anyone expecting the same as the two previous films, as it is more a comedy, the action in it is quite weak.

best comedy ever...?

This film is must watch viewing for any man who loves the spirit of abandoning responsibilities and getting effed up. I hardly laugh at comedies, this one had me laughing my ass off and made me love will ferrell where once he used to make me want to chuck a brick at the screen in the hope it was a magic screen and might hit him in the face (Incidentally he provides most of the laughs in the film). If you don't like him the film is still very watchable, and you never know you may end up falling in love with him as well. Noticed some of the reviews saying the comedy is crass or toilet humour but this is simply not true for the most part as the biggest laughs comes from the characters and gets richer with each viewing. Simply superb.

Enough magic to make it watchable

The film has its bad points which are expressed in other reviews, In this one I will only be dealing with the howevers... Whilst the storyline consists of the undeveloped stories of each of the main characters and ends a little too neatly there are moments within the film which make it worth watching, largely due to the almost characteur like portrayal of the main characters. Whilst the characters are seen by many critics as shallow there are a lot of characters in it to enjoy. Unfortunately what made the film enjoyable for me personally was the mingling of the eccentricities of each characters, I say unfortunately as this seems to be where it falters in many peoples eyes: Whilst interesting the characters may be, the running time of the film does not allow for the full realization of the characters. I did not mind this so much as I have personally found in wes anderson films (tho i still love them) that sometimes the building of the characters have slowed the film down to what is usually a melancholy pace. JHC is seen as a poor version of a wes anderson film but as a wes anderson fan I found the eccentricities of the characters enjoyable all the same, despite the troubles in fully realising them in the plot. If there had been another half an hour added and the films dead ends reworked into satisfying conclusions this film could have easily been an 8+ /10
