Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
Not the perfect potter film but close
I had pretty high hopes for the new potter film after the success of prisoner of azkabam so it was probably never gonna live up to expectations. It came pretty dam close but there were still some lingering problems.
One of the things i disliked about the first potter film was how the plot was second to establishing the world and the visual effects which had a negative effect on the pace. They still haven't found a way to make the whole hogwarts year flow fluently and everything still seems a little rushed. There was nothing on the actual lessons, just the tournament and the yule ball. The beginning of the movie is poorly paced too, with the quiditch world cup only lasting 5 minutes, basically over before it started. The books flow which is one of their best qualities and the small details that are in the books but not the movie make it that bit more charming.
Acting is good, the main trio have matured into decent actors and support is good as always, would still like to see more of some of the supporting players like snape and malfoy.
A pretty decent film which sets up the next film very well. As each film seems to be getting better maybe by film 7 we'll have the perfect Potter film. Heres hoping.
Hitch (2005)
formulaic but held together with some good performances
First off there is nothing new about Hitch. It contains all the clichés of rom-coms and adds nothing new. What it does have is a likable lead performance from Will Smith which carries the movie.
Without the right leading man Hitch could have been terrible but Smith is perfect. He makes Hitch cool and likable and is a very good comedy actor. Eva Mendes does her job well as the cynical object of Hitch's affections who is eventually won over but the best supporting role comes from Hitch's hapless client Albert. Albert is almost so pathetic that you want him to get the girl he shouldn't be able to. He also gets the films funniest moment.
The New York setting works well and is used to add to the film rather than just be a setting. Overall Hitch is enjoyable formulaic fun which is helped by some good performances. Recommended.
Constantine (2005)
Liked it but flawed
For some reason i was actually quite excited about Constantine. I go to the cinema a lot anyway but i hadn't actually been excited about a film for a while. Constantine pretty much lived up to my expectations but it had a couple of problems that stopped it from getting a higher vote.
The cast was generally pretty good, I'm still confused as to why Keanu keeps getting roles in big movies considering his limited acting ability but he's saved by a quite able supporting cast. Keanu's dead pan demeanour does fit his characters permanently miserable outlook however. The special effects are all fairly good and the action scenes are well executed but what lets the film down is it's script and the general pace of the film.
The script isn't a huge problem the dialogue just seems a little clunky in places but the film feels quite slow. When the philosophy starts to take over the film looses all momentum and then has a hard time building it up again. A couple more set pieces may have stopped this from happening but if the people behind this film are considering making a franchise out of it then this problem may disappear like in the first x-men film when a little too much time is spent in setting the scene.
Overall Constantine is a bit stupid in places and a little slow but this doesn't stop it from being one of the more enjoyable films to have been released in a while.
