The Drop Off (2019)
Incredibly dull
I can't believe how bad we are at trying to produce anything remotely funny in this country. Here is yet another example.
Just uninteresting unfunny lifeless and slow.
I see so much original extremely funny shows coming out of America and the UK yet here there is just nothing. It's so disappointing.
Me & My Left Brain (2019)
Student Film?
1hr and 12min? You kidding? Yawn. Yet another dreadfully amateurish movie from here in Australia. This is surely a script written to be a stage play?? It just goes nowhere!!
What is the point?
The writing is bland the direction poor the performances ok but it is just so slow and at 72min ends in a flash and is gone and forgotten.
Just a nothing film. I have seen student films with more impact. Was this seriously released in cinemas???
Now Add Honey (2015)
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Here We Go Again...
Why do we totally suck at film-making in this country! (Australia that is!).
Name 5 great films to come out of Australia in the past 30yrs? I really wish I could!
Animal Kingdom, Mad Max Fury Road, Chopper....um ok struggling now....The Castle and....um....Wolf Creek maybe....definitely could not name 10. OK Priscilla Queen of the Desert, um....Crocodile Dundee....um...struggle street now...
This is yet another plain, uninspiring, unoriginal, nothing flick that you don't watch you endure and wonder how the hell it was funded and why?
It's not clever nor witty or even remotely interesting.
I find it so hypocritical of Robyn Butler to say part of the overall message is how society over sexualises teenagers who don't have a clue about nor are in touch with their own sexuality at such a young age (16) and yet in almost every scene Lucy Fry is in she is either wearing a bikini, short shorts or some revealing outfit! Usually there is no reason for this at all. Her first few scenes for example in the swimming pool or when she is just lazing around the house.
It feels like the pilot to some awful TV drama that never got made and not a motion picture.
Not sure how it did at the cinema, did it even make it there?
Please stop funding this sub-standard dribble especially if tax payers money is being used.
Captain Fantastic (2016)
Just WOW
Love it when you watch a movie you have never heard much about and you're not expecting anything and it just carries you to an unbelievable pleasant place.
This is up there with the best films I have seen in the past 25 years.
Viggo Mortensen is one of my fave actors and the reason I watched it. No surprising he was nominated for an oscar for this role.
Some acting by those truly gifted just flows. It is effortless and just undeniably believable. Not only does Mortensen fall easily into that category but the whole cast do.
An innovative moving inspirational story, slick faultless directing, beautiful scenery, wow what a gem of a film. WATCH WATCH WATCH!!
On the Rocks (2020)
Say What Now??
Huh? What did I miss? How does this film just end like that? Is there a part 2? I was kind of interested and hanging in there even though it is mind-numbingly slow Bill Murray's acting holds it all together.
It's kind of a nothing story though. Lead female character wondering if hubby is cheating...hmmm ok...
The movie strolls along in her crusade to prove yes or no is he or isn't he, she gets an answer and bang up roll the credits??
I have debates with fellow movie fans over films like this. Lost In Translation was a similar pace, style but soooo much better!
The debate is whether films need a defined conclusion or a beginning middle and end OR some will debate are movies like this just an exploration into life and sneak peak into someone's private struggle??
Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2020)
Pass
Firstly WHY??? There was no need for a second movie. The first one was great, so innovative and so damn funny. This second one sorry just doesn't cut it. I think Cohen is relying too much on shock value rather than being genuinely clever and funny.
There are some shocking moments again pushing the envelope but that's exactly what he wants obviously and that will get more viewers and raise publicity.
I didn't laugh once.
The daughter premise wasn't convincing although the actor was great the storyline was almost like she was an added extra and the awkward moments together didn't really work.
Please don't make a third!
The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee (2020)
Just....Wow.
First of all...why? Secondly...why? And lastly ....WHY????
I already knew this would be bad but I was shocked and embarrassed at just HOW bad it is. I'll give a short and long version.
Short version
Really lightweight idea and script. Not funny at all. Cringe worthy 1/10 film.
Long version:
The really bad American accents by Aussie actors makes me assume the bulk of this was shot in Australia? The CGI is terrible and noticeable especially the numerous in car scenes.
The cameos also made me again sit there asking why? John Cleese, Chevy Chase, Olivia Newton John. This is a real struggle to even get through. I kept seeing how long it had to go.
I mean look, good on Hogan at 80 for having a go but it will not do his reputation or legacy any favours once he has passed on. I guess he is lucky during COVID it can't go to cinemas, not here in Australia anyway.
It's just so unfunny, I didn't laugh once not even a snicker. The premise if you can call it that is by no means strong enough to retain through the whole film. The side characters are not interesting or funny either.
Please Paul, no more. Just relax in your twilight years.
The House (2017)
Wow
I can probably count on one hand the times I have turned a movie off or walked out of a cinema. I turned this off after 30mins as I couldn't bring myself to waste one more second of my life.
I am shocked Amy Poehler read the final script and thought it was funny enough to do surely she has standards or was the pay that damn good?
If this has been re-written how bad were the original scripts!
How do these projects get the green light? Obviously Will Ferrell doesn't care and will do almost anything for a pay cheque but you would think Amy Poehler had some pride.
With the plethora of dud films being released these days it feels like someone has an OK idea, which is all this movie has going for it an OK premise and on the strength of that plus a few big names it gets made.
Will Ferrell is Will Ferrell. Take his character from this film and place him in a dozen other D grade failed projects and you wouldn't know the difference. Is the comedy supposed to derive from him being a straight white man who for some unknown reason suddenly becomes a gangster?
Hmmmm wasn't that the premise in (insert a dozen other titles here).
Do they deliberately target these films at morons who will more than likely giggle their way through this? Please someone help me understand!
The Invisible Man (2020)
Slick Production But Nothing to Get Really Excited About.
Yeah OK it's watchable. It's well made, well acted, well edited and directed but I didn't leave the cinema wanting to text my friends to say YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS like I did for example with Joker.
It bounces along at a fair old pace and never lags which is an accomplishment for a movie almost 2hrs long. I never looked at my watch once which for me is rare.
Story line has several flaws but hey it's a film about an invisible man! Ending I thought was a let down and there are plenty of times afterwards I found myself saying "yeah but why didn't she...."
It will no doubt make a handy profit as there are no major stars in it and I can see a sequel already in the works.
Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)
Snorefest
I was just so bored and uninterested watching this.
Yet another violent, meaningless, predictable waste of time. There seems to be so many of these films being made. The amount of death and violence is just so over the top and if that's all that will attract movie goers then society is a mess.
The story line goes nowhere. I never felt connected with the main character. You have an Australian female and a Scottish male in the lead roles both who deliver dreadful stereotypical American accents.
The end 15mins seemed like a statement about females standing up for themselves as opposed to anything relevant to the story and was just way too loud and busy. Just more stabbing, shooting, bashing, slashing, punching, beheading, scratching.......yawn....
On the whole just a nothing movie I had already forgotten by the time I got in the car to drive home.
All of these violent comic movies have been done to death. Apart from Joker which did not rely on that much graphic violence but more a brilliant acting performance.
Enough already! can we move on to actually making decent movies with interesting story lines and characters. Coen brothers where for art thou!
Mascots (2016)
Big Mistake!
What was Christopher Guest thinking! Talk about ruin your legacy. This is almost as bad as the 2nd Blues Brothers movie and that is really saying something!
I am not exaggerating when I say I didn't laugh once, not even a snicker.
I am sure they filmed this the same way as the other movies where the actors have license to stray from the script but really, this was the best they could come up with in the editing room from what I am sure would have been dozens of hours of footage?
Where are the funny lines? the creativity we saw in those excellent movies like Best in Show and Waiting for Guffman. Perhaps after 22yrs Guest just isn't up to it but it's not just the writing. Funny people like Michael Hitchcock, Parker Posey, Ed Begley Jr, Jane Lynch, Don Lake, Fred Willard not a funny line between them!
So disappointing. Other reviewers are correct when they say it is almost Best In Show 2 with a similar style and story line but at least Best In Show had some belly aching moments.
Perhaps there weren't many topics left after covering amateur theater, folk music, the Hollywood scene, dog shows and heavy metal bands. Mascots and that whole industry is probably apt but there is just nothing funny about this movie at all.
Retire Mr. Guest. Go and sit on a beach somewhere and enjoy life. Please don't do any more damage to your awesome list of truly funny films.
Sisters (2015)
Yikes!
Mind boggling how two seasoned professionals could make such rubbish. I was totally bored after 10mins and it didn't improve.
Just a plain uneventful story, no laughs at all, wow what a stinker! Obviously Poehler and Fey will get the green light on any project, but this? What were they thinking! This is a TV movie at best and certainly not a motion picture.
They called on all their SNL buddies to play minor roles and the whole film revolves around a party but Animal House this ain't! I didn't even snicker!
The moral of the story is....is? um....not sure..This will bomb at the cinema and I think Poehler and Fey will struggle to convince the suits to fund the next attempt, if there ever is one.
Stick to short TV shows.
Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)
And The Oscar Goes To.......
Yes it is a tad slow and yes the entire film takes place backstage in a small Broadway theater BUT this is a must see movie.
OK so you have heard of all the hype about Michael Keaton's performance and yes it is brilliant. Why else would he win the Golden Globe for Best Actor and he must surely be a dead cert for the Oscar....HOWEVER...there is much more to this gem of a film.
Ed Norton is brilliant as is Naomi Watts, Zach Galifianakis and the entire supporting cast. The direction is remarkable with some shots feeling like they go on and on forever.
If you like fast paced action movies with changing scenery avoid this at all costs. If you are impressed by truly great acting and want to see a refreshing and unique looking film see it three times like I have.
Loved it and once it's out on DVD I will be adding it to my prized collection of cinematic classics.
What We Do in the Shadows (2014)
Unfunniest comedy of all time!
It's very rare I hit the eject button on a DVD before it ends but I just had to with this totally unfunny effort from NZ.
It's a refreshing idea but this is amateur hour and looks like a film made by a bunch of film students. I didn't laugh once, not even a giggle.
95% of it is filmed inside a dark house which just adds to the dreariness of it all. It's slow and I can't see it going into cinema release in the states. I have liked a few oddball comedies from NZ but I will remember this one for all the wrong reasons. Just awful!
I am stunned at the great reviews it has received on here and I suspect they were written by people who worked on the project.
Dumb and Dumber To (2014)
Thought So
I had an awful feeling this would be average and boy was I right! What made the first movie so lovable was it's fresh idea, the script was very good and the performances by Carrey and Daniels outstanding.
It has been a long time between drinks and in that time the Farrelly Brothers have come up with every poo, fart and dick joke possible. The novelty has well and truly worn thin.
I laughed twice from memory and by no means were they the gut wrenching belly laughs I experienced in the first movie.
The storyline is bland, cheating wife and lover try and scam unsuspecting husband out of millions and if it wasn't for these bumbling fools getting in the way they would have gotten away with it...yawn...
Instead of relying on the same old laughs, the same formula I would have loved to have seen some fresh ideas but sadly they were nowhere to be seen.
I hope they don't tarnish the original by doing a 3rd.
Taken 3 (2014)
Quick We Need a 3rd!
It takes a long time to write an outstanding script. Re-writes, improved endings, introduction of new characters. Years go by, re-write 17 is completed and finally it's time to present.
At the other end of the spectrum you have scripts and in turn movies that wreak of something that was slapped together in 5mins to get it out in the market to hopefully take advantage of the success of the first version.
I present....Taken 3.
The first movie was actually quite good. I nice idea, a role perfect for Liam Neeson, a well executed and very watchable film. The 2nd...hmmmm not sure why they bothered but this offering, the 3rd is just plain dreadful.
The same tired regurgitated stereotypical Russian mafia types, the same fights, groping to see who can pick up the weapon first, car chases, silly cops.....time to have a nap!
I can guarantee you there will not be a Taken 4.
Into the Storm (2014)
Not So Hot Air!
If you rent this DVD for $2 (please don't buy it!) just fast fwd to about 1hr in. There is about 30secs of pretty amazing effects at an airport with planes being dragged off by this almighty storm. The rest of it is utter crap!
This has every cliché you could fit into a storm or disaster movie.
1. Father tries to improve crappy relationship with son and it takes a natural disaster to make it happen.
2. Dorky guy loves hot girl and it takes a natural disaster to put them together.
3. Add some oddball sideline characters for light comedy relief.
There are heaps more but I am sure you get the idea. The CGI effects are impressive but like me you will find yourself just grabbing the remote and forwarding to them. The acting is dreadful, story line so bland and unimaginative. This really is a D grade movie at best.
The Imitation Game (2014)
Top Notch!
I always enjoying watching quality cinema but one bugbear before I start this review. Do movies really have someone who works on continuity? Whoever that person was for this film should be blacklisted! Just an annoyance of mine that simple errors are not picked up.
In this film there were a few extremely obvious examples of continuity that were not picked up. It staggers me how this can happen during the editing process. In one shot where the main character is belted in the face and has blood streaming from his face he has an obvious blood stain just under his lip.
In the next shot it is gone. There is another shot where he has a tear rolling down his cheek. In the next shot it isn't there (annoying!!).
Apart from that gripe, this is quality cinema and enjoyable to say the least. I really love films based on true stories and when they come with slick directing and a stellar performance by Benedict Cumberbach (is that his real name??) it isn't hard to give the movie top marks.
It is a fascinating story, one most people wouldn't know about. Just how much of the film is accurate is debatable but it rockets along at a steady pace, doesn't lag at any point and I am certain will feature heavily come awards time.
Sex Tape (2014)
Erase it Immediately
Seriously how do these movies get the green light?
To me it looks like this was presented to the studio as a 1 page synopsis which would have read something like "married couple who used to once have raunchy hot sex have had kids and their sex life has become non-existent. To spice things up they film themselves having sex and to their shock and horror the tape is accidentally released to friends, family and work colleagues" The End.
So many of these C grade films get made on the strength of a premise (i.e. Horrible Bosses, Bad Neighbors etc..) but lack any depth. I mean I wasn't expecting anything deep and meaningful, how could you when the title of the movie is Sex Tape!
After 20mins the whole premise for the entire movie is done and dusted. This is well documented in the promotional ads for the film anyway so the viewer already is aware of what is going to happen. The remaining 85% of the film is just unbelievably flaky as the two main characters attempt to erase or get back copies of the sex tape.
So boring. Why does Diaz bother doing this garbage? Surely she doesn't need the money? She is actually a very skilled actor which she proves in The Counselor but damn does she make some duds. Recent films like Annie, The Other Woman, Knight and Day and now Sex Tape were all just dreadful.
Her manager (does she have one?) needs to convince her to lay low for a while and not just sign the dotted line on anything thrown at her!
Under the Skin (2013)
Sorry....WHAT?????
In my 30 years watching movies I have hit the eject button before the movie has ended twice. Make it three times as I add this movie to that very short rare list.
This is the dullest film ever made. I usually like films from Scotland but Trainspotting this ain't! They probably had access to Scarlett Johansson for three days. Her fee...hmmm $2mil? Total gross takings $2mil - what a flop!
She looks grossly overweight as well so it's not even worth the $2 for some eye candy.
Terrible terrible film - avoid at all cost.
The Double (2013)
Dark, Mooody and oh so so so SO BORING!
Don't get me wrong I like a visually adventurous film. It's great to watch something refreshing but it still has to be entertaining I mean we watch movies for entertainment right?
This is just dull. Slow as a drunk snail. Dark, depressing, meaningless it doesn't go anywhere do anything stand for something say much at all. It's hard to follow, uninteresting and dis-jointed.
The three people I watched it with fell asleep but I am brave. I will watch every movie to the end. It's almost like a challenge. This was a real stretch.
I see it took a massive $200,000 at the box office including a spectacular $14,000 opening weekend. Good luck Mr. Ayoade getting the green light on your next project!
The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
Downright Perfection
From the little I know about Wes Anderson I can only imagine he is a perfectionist. How else could you explain such a masterpiece as The Grand Budapest Hotel.
Visually stunning, witty, seamless direction, Fast-paced and with stellar performances this is cinematic excellence.
The cameos come thick and fast as do the one liners and how Ralph Fiennes didn't win an Oscar is a mystery!
This is a movie I could watch 5 times and never get bored. It will go down in the archives as an absolute classic!
I really enjoy Anderson's style. I loved the Royal Tenenbaums, The Darjeeling Limited and Moonrise Kingdom but for me this is by far his best work. 10/10
April Rain (2014)
oh....my........GOD!!!!!!
There wasn't a 0 on here so I couldn't give this movie the score I wanted. Also calling it a "movie" doesn't feel right.
Jeeeeeeezus! I have watched films that have bad acting or the script is crap, the directing poor but to have all three in the one project that takes the cake!
Oh I forgot the casting! that's a 4 out of 4!
Really, what is wrong with the industry where total crap like this gets made? I agree with David this quite possibly could be the worst film ever made. You usually know a movie is going to be bad when the opening credits roll.
This has every bad cliché known to man. The acting is so bad I constantly had to put my jaw back in place. The direction abysmal, the script ridiculously bad.
Rent this thing if you can find it and use it as an example of how NOT to make motion pictures.
The Angriest Man in Brooklyn (2014)
Lightweight
Suffers from the same disease a lot of films these days suffer from - good idea poorly executed.
It would have been an exciting prospect securing Robin Williams for the role. Mila Kunis probably signed on to work with him but the script they have to work with is all potatoes and no meat.
Weird casting Peter Dinklage as the brother!
The story goes nowhere, ending is lame, the moral of the story is.....? It's like going to a Japanese restaurant eating a 4 course meal and still feeling hungry and unsatisfied.
RIP Robin Williams - one of the greats.
Neighbors (2014)
Just AWFUL
I didn't laugh ONCE during this. Not once, not even a snicker. It's well made as in it looks good, some interesting direction especially in the party scenes but there is just nothing else.
I kept waiting for something to happen. I can see how this would have been green lighted. Possibly sold on the synopsis alone "hey I have this great idea about a fraternity that moves next door to a married couple with a kid". Script is written in 3 weeks shopped around and sold.
It just goes nowhere! Fizzles out to a boring ending, no laughs, just 90 mins of absolute fluff!
