Anon (2018)
Flat movie that relied on sexy women
This movie had some gorgeous women in sexy lingerie or the nude -- that was pretty much the only thing cool about the movie. And maybe also the minimalist apartments with chic furniture that were total #goalz.
The rest of the movie fell really flat. Clive Owen seems to be typecast as that bad boy law enforcer who wears the same costume in every movie, a former-family man who now chain smokes and drinks because he's just oh so depressed. What was supposed to be a SyFy film with perhaps a cool explanation for why the hacks were happening, took a drastic turn into a strange stalker film. The cool CGI couldn't save it.
It was really nothing exceptional... As ridiculous as it is, I'd actually recommend "What Happened to Monday" over this one in terms of a more legitimate Syfy/dystopian film, not to mention more impressive action scenes.
Swiped (2018)
Was this written and produced by a 13 year old?
Couldn't watch the whole movie. Was it written by a 13-year-old boy who's never spoken to girls? The film production was incredibly low-budget -- and not in a good way. Really disappointed that supposedly up-and-coming actors would star in this disaster of a film, which is targeted for teens but I do NOT recommend teenagers to watch this and believe that women would or should EVER behave anywhere near how this movie depicts.
Cruise (2018)
So bad it hurts
Emily Ratajkowski dear have some respect for yourself and pick better roles. This was all of the cliches and stereotypes combined, absolutely cringeworthy. Women are nothing but attractive sex objects and men are hyper-masculine idiots, such an original idea!
Darwin's Nightmare (2004)
A Very Important Film
Films like these help us understand the impact of our consumerism, and how entire communities are suffering because of how we spend our money and the things we purchase. It's raw, riveting, and hard to watch, but every bit true and hopefully influential and inspiring to all who see it. There is a dark side to our privileged Western lifestyle and communities that are directly effected, and this movie should be a mandatory watch for everyone who buys seafood or cheap, non-organic foods in general.
Dumplin' (2018)
Surprisingly unoriginal
It being a Netflix production with let's say an "untraditional" lead character, I expected this movie to be original and at least somewhat different from the rest. But it just felt like any other lifetime movie that tries to make you cry but unfortunately misses the mark. As an admirer of Dolly Parton, I do appreciate the music and how they use it to bring confidence and joy to the becoming-of-age characters. Nonetheless, the plot is dry and predictable, and the whole "love your body even though it's unhealthy and fat" motive is seriously a bit overdone.
The Good Lie (2014)
Every citizen of this planet needs to see this film
I can't deny I was skeptical about this film. I expected a "The Blind Side"-esque white savior movie.
What it turned out to be was an incredibly authentic, realistic, and heart-wrenchingly beautiful film that is probably the most underrated film of the year.
Do not be misguided by the terribly misleading movie poster. The main character of the film is not AT ALL Reese Witherspoon. Instead, it's the warm, relatable and three- dimensional characters played by actual Sudanese actors who are extremely talented.
You will find yourself in tears for many scenes. I had tears of joy, tears of deep sympathy for the pain of cultural shock, tears for the unimaginable hardships of the real situation that the Sudanese refugees experienced, and tears for the misguided and unappreciative ways of the current first-world societies, especially America.
Every citizen of the planet should see this film, because it is humbling, it allows us to take a glimpse of a life unimaginable to us, and it makes us appreciate. If you also enjoyed this film, do your friends a favor and recommend this to them. It will spark small changes in lives, for the better.
