The Watcher (2022)
Just read the real story...
I thought this was going to be more "based on a true story" than "inspired by real events." It bears little similarity to the actual story of The Watcher and everything that went on. I guess they needed to invent a ton of material to create interest across so many episodes. This show would have been better had it not traded so heavily on just a few facts from the real story and instead either - 1) told the real story without going so far down an underdeveloped side story that also is reminiscent of a different true crime story; and/or 2) it abandoned all pretense of being related to the actual Watcher story. I didn't expect a documentary but I also wasn't expecting something so far afield from the real story. I already felt bad for the real Watcher family, but if people think some of the elements of this show are real, that's even worse for them. 3/10 is mainly for the acting, which is above average across the board.
The Block Island Sound (2020)
Better than the reviews make it seem
This is not a horror movie. This movie is about the dynamics and relationships of a family as they deal with tragedy, which was precipitated by strange events. This movie is a drama, with some psychological thriller/supernatural/extraterrestial/???suggestions. Similar to "Safety Not Guaranteed," it's about the journey of the characters through the movie, leading toward a conclusion that is a reveal of sorts, but purposely leaves the viewer behind to not know what lays beyond.
She Dies Tomorrow (2020)
Inaccessible, arthouse film where nothing happens
I feel like this movie could have been good, but it was so inaccessible to the viewer that the meaning is lost. Literally nothing happens. If there is some point to be made about aging, the inevitability of death, mental illness...the writer/director needed to give us a bit more to get the message. Tomorrow never really comes, and no one dies. Beyond the idea that tomorrow is never really here and dying "tomorrow" is both always and never possible, this movie was a slow march nowhere.
