Tarnation (2003)
interesting development but not an interesting movie
Yes it was made for no money, and yes it is a collection of mostly 'found' material, and yes it was edited using possibly the most low-tech program possible, and yes it is brutally honest, but does that make it exciting cinema? Unfortunately, no. Maybe if Jonathan had gone on to kill 40 people or if he invented the cure for parkinson's disease this would have served as an amazing insight into his life. However, as a mildly interesting actor/filmmaker, this just extreme self-indulgence. Am I supposed to feel sorry for Jonathan? Does it make it better to film your parents/grandparents under times of intense stress to grind your ax? How much money did Jonathan make to sell his psychosis to wellspring production?
Can I have my matinée admission ticket price back?
Open House (2004)
No sale on this one
The premise is amazing and the some of the acting, notably Sally Kellerman and Anthony Rapp, is charming... but this film is near unwatchable. The music sounds as if it comes from some sort of the royalty free online site and the lyrics as if they were written with a rhyming dictionary open on the lap. Most of the singing is off-key. I think they may have filmed with the singing accapella and put in the music under it... The dialogue is really stupid and trite. The movie works best when it is actually talking about the real estate but unfortunately it strays to often into stupid farcical sub-plots. I found myself checking my watch after ther first twenty minutes and after 40 wondering 'when is it ever going to end.'
Natural Selection (1999)
funny movie deserves a chance
I had the joy of catching this flick at a film festival and it is truly a find. Very off-the-wall independent stuff. And very funny. At times you may think it goes over the top, and then it goes further. With the right circumstances, this could have been a great cult hit, as it is much more entertaining, thought provoking and well-acted than something like Donnie Darko.
And Carradine is absurdly hilarious. Is he being serious? Is making fun of himself? I don't know, watch the movie and make your own choice.
The script is the true find of the production as it reads like the perverse parody that 'Natural Born Killers' never amounted to. It jumps back and forth between a sort of film noir and pseudo-documentary - and I wish there had been even more that interplay. It's almost as if the director stumbled onto a movie and didn't realize it was as funny as it ended up being.
