Mano po (2002)
it hits really close to home...
in contradiction to the other poster, i thought that the portrayal is very relatable to some Filipino Chinese in the Philippines including myself. when we used to live in the Philippines, most of what happened in the movie actually happened to us also. although many were exaggerated, in general, they were all very relatable to me and my family. with regards to the concubines, my father had a lot of it. although, they were always hidden from me, my mother and my brothers, we knew that he houses some of his "kabit." to make a long story short, it was quite accepted in my dad's side of the family as long as it remained a secret amongst the family. i went to a Chinese school and the school would always make announcements of the recent kidnappings to warn us to be extra careful. it was a big deal in our school. my dad was ambushed once and thankfully escaped from being kidnapped. i had a friend that got massacred by a theft in their own home. they later found out that the theft was a worker from their family's factory. if you were to make a movie about our family, it would be very similar, if not more interesting, to this movie. even if these movie was exaggerated in some areas like with all the crying and stuff, this movie was pretty good in showcasing a Filipino Chinese family. we've waited for so long to have a movie like these that opens up the door towards understanding and acknowledgment of the Filipino Chinese community as an integral part of the Filipino society.
The Stepford Wives (2004)
this movie rocks...
seriously, i don't know what the critics and haters here on IMDb hate about this movie. just saw it this afternoon and it was a blast. ill have stepford wives over van helsing anytime. yes, i am your average moviegoer. i liked van helsing and day after tomorrow despite the bad rap. never listened to critics and haters anyways...
at first, i thought this was gonna be one of those girlie movies so i was kind of hesitant. so got a bunch of friends to watch it with me and i was proven wrong. the stepford wives will likely connect to any demographics. you'll have fun no matter how old you are and what sex you are. everything in this movie came together very nicely. this movie is what summer blockbusters are all about. if you like to see this movie, follow your heart and go see it. don't judge a book by its cover and don't listen to those haters and critics either. if you're one of those who likes serious movies, this ain't for you. but if you're looking for a laidback afternoon, this movie is something that you can just kickback and enjoy. i'd say money well spent and this is worth 2 hours of your life. go see it and enjoy. hope this will be a huge hit!!!!!!!!! Nicole is so hot at the end of the film.
Dogville (2003)
Dogville is a masterpiece, Ms. Kidman shines
Dogville is a classic and a masterpiece. Despite its three hour run, this film is a triumph. This film is not anti-american at all. Nicole Kidman delivers another luminous and great performance. She should get her second Oscar for her portrayal of Grace. Nicole is truly one of the great actresses of our time and is comparable to the great actresses of Hollywood's Golden Age. it's sad to say that this kind of film never gets any mainstream success. the oscar voters should keep this film in consideration. Even though it is shot in a bare soundstage, this film will amaze you in its storytelling and its acting. Open mindedness is the key to be able to admire dogville.
