Luther (2010)
One of the best British shows ever made!
In the recent past television series have been elevated, especially dramas. Where the US has Breaking Bad, The Wire, The Sopranos, Dexter etc.. the UK has this little gem.
As far as detective shows go, i cannot say i have much time for them. apart from Dexter(which is really about a psychopath), Sherlock and this. So i feel as though i can give an unbiased opinion on it.
DCI John Luther is a troubled man who uses unorthodox methods in order to catch the criminals who terrorize the streets of a modern day London, some of which boarder on a moral grey area and tiptoe across the boundaries of the law. The other characters worth mentioning are Alice, a sociopath who makes for some great TV viewing, she takes this show from being a typical police drama and she turns into a completely different show with her strange good looks and screen presence. Its difficult to imagine anyone who could own a scene that includes Idris Elba who in one of England's finest actors, but she manages to. The other is DS Justin Ripley who is fine officer and a loyal friend to Luther.
All in all this show hits the mark, for me anyway. It is gritty, dark, intense and at some moments scary. Some of the violence is quite graphic and people who cannot tolerate seeing nasty people doing nasty things should perhaps avoid this one.
I realise i did not go into much detail but i did not want to spoil it for anyone, believe me when i say that it took me a while to find the time to watch this, i tend to find things don't live upto the hype, but im glad i watched this little peach. So much better than i thought it would be.
If i was to try and talk about some of the negative parts of the show... perhaps that there are only 14 episodes in total, sometimes the violence feels slightly over the top. And in an episode one of the deaths make no sense.
I would give this a 10/10 for breathing a breath of fresh air into police dramas, also a 10/10 for Idris on top form and a 10/10 for Ruth Wilson.
Scary Movie 5 (2013)
Really terrible
I rarely come onto IMDb to rant about a bad film, i only take the time to write a review if i really enjoyed a certain movie. This however, was dreadful from start to finish. Scary movie 1 and 2 were very funny imo and 3 had a few laughs in it 4 was just about watchable, but this was bad. Its hard to believe how this film was even made and whats more shocking is that the actors actually thought it would be a good idea to be in it.
I will point out that i am not a huge fan of horror films so i may not have a great knowledge on some of the movies being parodied. I shouldn't and wouldn't expect a movie like this to be 10/10 as it is just a silly parody movie and i have seen the others in the series. The writing was okay in the previous ones and there were definitely laughs throughout but this one the writing is awful and the movie relies heavily on slapstick humour. I half giggled once i think in the whole movie.
I wouldn't bother wasting your time to see this, i even think 'A haunted house' is better than this and that is saying something. I can see why Anna Farris wasn't in it.
1/10 I hope this is the last one.
21 & Over (2013)
Good fun comedy
I have just finished watching 21 & Over and i have to say i liked it a lot.
If you liked 'Super Bad' or 'Sex drive' or a similar teen comedy (yes i know they are 21 but it has that feel to it) in which the characters undertake a ridiculously crazy journey, drink lots, get in all kinds of predicaments and use excessive bad language then this movie is for you.
It is basically a tale of two friends who visit their other friend at his college home on his 21st birthday which happens to also be the eve of his medical exam. They make him go out for a quiet drink and it all escalates from there. I wont go any further in case i splurt out some spoilers.
The pace of the movie is fairly fast as you would expect from a movie in this genre. It is well directed and the story keeps you interested throughout. At first i found Miles Teller's character to be very annoying and reminiscent of the personality of Vince Vaughan's character in 'Swingers' but as the movie goes on the character changes and becomes funnier and more likable. Obviously there is the cliché romance with the cute girl with the horrible boyfriend. The soundtrack is well thought out and fits in nicely. There is many laugh-out-loud moments in this movie, although some jokes could be considered boarder- line semi-racist..
This movie is definitely worth 93 minutes you will spend watching it. 8/10 from me as i like films from this genre.
Django Unchained (2012)
Fantastic!
I want to start by saying i am a huge QT fan, so my opinion may be biased. I watched this film today and i have to say i thought it was fantastic. 10 out of 10. I was surprised by Jamie Foxx's superb performance. Waltz was on top form as per usual. But the stand out for me was DiCaprio, definitely the best performance he has done to date and of course what would a QT film be without Samuel L Jackson, who is also brilliant. The cinematography equals that of Kill Bill, and dare i say possibly surpasses it?! The script is well written and has a good story line. It features the use of the 'N' word frequently and contains strong language. Of course it has that gory feel all the great QT flicks have.
There was one scene that felt as though it didn't belong in the movie and that was the 'bags on the head scene' where there is a peculiar appearance from Jonah Hill.
All in all a fantastic watch for both QT lovers and people who have never seen anything from his filmography.
I can't wait for the next QT extravaganza!
Judge Dredd (1995)
5/10
When i was a child i loved this film, having read a lot of Dredd comic books i am a huge fan. I recently watched this film again and cringed at how bad the plot/acting etc was.
Rob Schnieder ruins this movie for me.
But at the same time it has some fun action and brings me back some happy memories.
If you are looking for a good movie with good acting this might not be for you, after all the star is sly Stallone,
Although, if you are looking for a fun action film with explosions then give it a go.
Demons Never Die (2011)
Not Good
All in all its not a good film, I saw the cast of this movie and had high hopes with the likes of Robert Sheehan, Ashley Walters and a few of the other British up-and-comers but i was very disappointed. I am also a fan of both slasher films and gritty English dramas. This movie however, fits in with all the clichés surrounding this genre and offers nothing in the way of originality. The plot is stupid to say the least and the soundtrack could just be 'NOW 78' or whatever. The only half decent thing was a few cases of good acting from Robert Sheehan (which we come to expect) and the girl who plays his girlfriend.
I give this film a generous 5/10
