Emma (2009)
8/10
New 'Emma' stays very close to Jane Austens Heroin.
19 October 2009
I was surprised to see the new Emma. It's back to the way Jane Austen wrote it. It's a slowly unfolding story about a not too pretty girl with character flaws. She has a temper, she gossips, she hurts peoples feelings, and she can't keep her promise to stop matchmaking. But she grows on you.

The plot is close to Austens novel. The only funny aspect comes from Gambon, although everybody's acting is good. I like it, when actors act with their eyes, in stead of rambling on about it. I think you'll notice more subtle hints if you know the story.

The first two episodes are not romantic. But then, you know Jane Austen pays a lot of attention to describing how to behave when you're a rich civilian in the country.

You have to live through this movie
10 May 2005
Once again, I am disappointed how little people have seen this marvelous film. I think it is because the main character is a nun. And how attractive is that? But aren't you interested about the story of a smart, modern woman, who chooses to flee in a convent? And don't you want to know what happens if she has to leave?

I must say it is the best role I saw Kristin Scott Thomas play ever. You really feel why she makes her decisions. Only by acting, without spelling it out, this movie makes you understand the behaving of several people. And that is real Art.

It's one of the movies you will be thinking of for days. And every time you see Kristin, or hear someone talk about her, you relive the moments this movie showed you.

tedious and not funny
12 September 2004
I had high hopes for a really good evening. But my mistake was to think this movie was funny. Well, for fun you'd better watch Happiness.

Imagine a family of depressed members. Flat characters, that don't come to life. Everyone is strange and has his own single issue. And they all sit speechless staring in front of them. Well, that's the movie.

You'll expect something to happen and the persons to come to live. But you'll be disappointed. Even the things that happen are slow, unemotional, and predictable.

Sorry, did I say predictable? Sorry, no. No-one can predict such boring, little changes in the lives of movie-characters, which are supposed to be EN-TER-TAI-NING.

The music is badly chosen. The best parts are the ones without soundtrack, and then suddenly you get distracted from the plot because of some annoying, wrongly chosen pop song. This happens so often, you'll think someone is trying to make a statement you don't get. Bad luck it's never quiet for a whole scene.

Because I like happy-endings, I don't see the point of discovering why someone is depressed, and then ending the movie without showing this knowledge did make any difference to the person.

Let's end positive. Gene Hackman was OK. And the nice part of the movie is when he takes out his grandchildren to teach them to be naughty.

What's wrong with you, people??? Why has this movie such a low rating???

I loved those bugs everywhere. The special effects are OK. The story itself is a bit naive, but, hé, it's a fairy-tale!

Everyone who likes Who frames Roger Rabbit, Ant Z, Thumbelina by Don Bluth (OK, bad example) or over-the-top-sentimental-romance like What Dreams May Come must like Joe's Apartment.

What do we have here? 1: a lonely country-boy in New York; 2: two ugly and dumb bad guys; 3: a sweet girl as love interest; and 4: thousands of bugs who are supposed to be loathsome, but soon turn out to be adorable. The first three items you have seen all before. But the fourth! You've never seen something like this, and you will never forget you saw it.

a really boring waste of time
19 August 2004
Warning: Spoilers
I really don't understand why some voters have given 10 points to this TV-movie. There is only one way to enjoy it: turn of the sound, play your own favorite music, an open a good bottle of wine.

The characters were really flat. I couldn't care less what happened to them. There was a lack of dialog. It felt like I was watching a summary of a movie. There was no suspense, no tension, no emotion.

I don't understand why someone would make a movie about a DI who has to work with an ex-lover, when this relationship has no function in the events. Or was it a lousy attempt to bring romance in the plot?

The end was a bit confusing: the murderer possessed an item of one of his/hers victims. But WHY in the first place did he/she take this item? Such details can really annoy me.

You'd better watch A Touch of Frost.

See it, because you'll love it
17 April 2004
This is a really sympathetic movie and it startles me to see how little people have voted for it yet. It is a funny story with really sympathetic characters. It is located in a beautiful village in Cornwall, where a mystery lady disclosures everybody's secrets. A friendly doctor from London arrives and gets involved. As he learns to know the villagers, they start to grow on him. A lot of them are strange in a very funny way. After I saw it, I felt like I had met real people. I promise you you'll love it too. There is a sequel, but thats not half as nice.

This movie doesn't deserve a 6/10 average
17 April 2004
I always feel like I have to explain why I like this movie.

The beginning of the movie is really stupid: a woman is married to a professional singer and divorces him because he sang a love-song looking to another woman in the audience. For the people who keep watching after this scene, there is a nice hour of movie-watching coming.

Sixteen years later. The divorced woman's daughter falls for a singer. The movie is about how everybody reacts upon her crush. It is a sunny story with songs that stay with you all day. The characters are friendly and all persons react really logical on the events.

I hope more people watch this, and become to like it.
