The Dark Knight (2008)
One of the best action movies in years.
This is by far the best comic book superhero movie ever made and it is one of the best action movies I have seen for years.
It cuts out all the crap in modern day Hollywood movies. Such as overdosing the audience with unnecessary special effects, trying to charm the audience by trying to be overly funny, cramming in too much action, and so on. It has real old school feel to it.
The story is great, acting is great, and the execution too is also great. Heath Ledger undoubtedly steals the show with his breathtaking portrayal of the Joker, but then the Joker was meant to be the star of the movie. If the first of the new batman movies dealt with Bruce Wayne becoming Batman, this one deals with the consequences of the imbalance caused by appearance of Batman in Gotham city. Only thing I wished more was for the movie to go into the background of the Joker more, but perhaps that was meant for the next one?
It's a long movie but not a single scene out of place and really the performance of Heath Ledger alone makes it worth while experience, but that isn't to say that the whole movie isn't mesmerising because it is. I never read batman comics, I wasn't too crazy about the first movie and never got into the hype of this one, other than hearing of the death of Heath ledger. So after being let down by the Indiana Jones few weeks before, I was well and truly pleased when I came out of the cinema even though I had to pay a small fortune and sitting through the movie in an uncomfortable seat had given me a back pain.
The Blood of Heroes (1989)
Excellent
It was a while ago when I first saw this movie and watched it again recently. People might complain that it doesn't have enough dialogue, plot is not intricate enough, there aren't any special effects for a Sci-fi movie, and it is too low budget to be considered a good movie. But I'll say people who say such things, they don't really know how to appreciate a good movie or understand what a good movie is, because they are too used to modern day rubbish jam packed with special effects, explosions, unnecessary twists and horrible scripts.
I think everything is done just right in the movie and I especially love the way they give no sentimentality to the backdrop to the movie. No discussion of the past as to why the world they do jugging is the way it is and everyone in this world just get on with their lives in this gritty desolate world without any lamenting thoughts to the past.
I won't go into much detail, but all I'll say is just watch the movie and you'll be glad that you did. By the way, it seems like there are two versions which I didn't realise until I read the comments here and seems like the shorter version cuts out the ending. Since I thought the ending was very fitting I do recommend you watch the longer version, it just won't have the same impact without the proper ending.
Blade Runner (1982)
Cinema at its very best!
I always think that movies are a form of story telling. I am one of those people who believe that movies do not need great story line to be great. They just need to be made great!!! Blade runner is one the finest example of this. I'm not saying that story line in Blade Runner is bad, it's far from it. But I'm trying to stress that there are so many things you can enjoy in a movie, other than the plot i.e. the visuals, sound, acting, dialog and so on. And great movies should excel in all these aspects.
From the very first scene the director, Ridley Scott, sets the mood with stunning visuals and sound. Immediately you are immersed in a dark, bleak, yet hypnotically beautiful world of the future. We are taken through the the story, which deals with some deep issues (which I won't go into for the benefit of those who hasn't seen this movie), in a dreamy and balletic manner. The pace is spot on and the emphasis in the movie enables you to grasp these issues while you're watching, and in the climatic finish the director leaves you with an afterthought that is both sweet and bitter.
Blade Runner truly is movie making at its very best. It does everything right; it's visually stunning, even now after 20yrs ; acting is brilliant, especially Rutger Hauer; and it also has one of the best movie sound tracks. Dialogs between the character is sparse but it is the case of 'less is more'.
Finally there is an issue of which version is better? The Original or the Directors Cut. Well I like them both and I consider them to be two quite different movies. In the directors cut the removal of the voice over and added scenes make it much heavier. But its the case of what do you prefer? Delightful afternoon tea to enlighten yourself or a late night heavy liqueur to drown your sorrows. Either way it's a must see movie.
