The Alamo (2004)
Good, but something missing
A very good movie... not great, but it could have been.... It's been written that enough footage was shot to make a ten hour version of the movie.. I think the great film is out there in those 10 hours someplace... maybe a director's cut on DVD will help.
STILL, it's the best and most accurate ALAMO movie yet made, incredibly well shot and some great acting. The look of the men was perfect, great costumes and dressing. Great faces, helped bring the story to life.
The big, long lead up to the battle didn't pay off enough... the battle was over far too quickly for a movie ABOUT the battle! The real fight lasted four hours, into daylight. This was not shown... it looked like the Texians lost the fight in 20 minutes.
Looking forward to seeing MORE of this movie on DVD... perhaps a better version, wouldn't that be a treat?
Wicked Spring (2002)
A really great, fresh take
Realy enjoyed the movie, didn't know what to expect as it began in a very unique way, but soon, I was taken over by the movie's beauty and storytelling. I felt like I was watching something from the Civil War period and I enjoyed meeting these characters through visuals, not dialog. The battle scenes were well-done, great sound effects throughout the movie. The lead actor did an admirable job of representing a soldier from the Civil War -- (as an actor, I thought it was very believable). I liked how the movie seemed to have been broken up into chapters, a different feel and look as the story progressed from hour to hour (in movie time). A little long in the middle -- great opening and closing. Cinematography was incredible and directing strong for a first movie. Civil War buffs should check this out, it's very accurate. Indie film buffs should check it out because it is an Indie-friendly story told with a fresh eye and great talent. B+
