Papillon (2017)
Way better than the original
Yep for me this remake is way better than the original which is usually not the case but in the instance it is.
I'll admit I watched the remake before o watched the original which this version blew me away. I followed up by watching the original version with Steve McQueen and expected it to be on par if not better than this remake.
Surprisingly this remake is a rare example of a remake actually being better. Why? Because the story and flow of this remake is told way better. The original starts off pretty much in prison the remake you see the story of why and how Papillon went to prison. Not only that but I felt the original movie was not paced nor told effectively.
I can see why the original movie was given a high IMDb rating but the remake should be given way higher than the original.
Kudos to the director, screen play, casting crew as Charlie was a great choice as lead.....
Life on Our Planet (2023)
Very good up until the final episode
It's visually beautiful and since Spielberg's name is attached to this series you can expect a visual spectacular which it is.
I loved every episode and as much as some complain the going back and forth during episodes to illustrate time periods this non linear change didn't bother me at all.
My only complaint..... I was expecting the full story of the human species just like they talked about every other species but they didn't it was like as if it was a second thought or ran out of time or funding. It was a very disappointing end to say the least. The final episode barely had 20 minutes of human species discussion.
I was left wanting more and there for was disappointed. But besides that it is a good documentary. Morgan Freeman as usual is a legend narrator.
Thriller 40 (2023)
It's a good documentary with some new footage
It is a good documentary with some footage I have never seen taken from the archives which was nice especially some thriller footage. I also enjoyed John Landis giving deeper insight into the making of thriller which I loved.
There was some reused footage and also some of the same celebrities giving their interviews I have seen before eg usher.
I think the documentary was lacking a little bit in regards of showing some candid video footage of Michael Jackson himself. I would of loved to see some unreleased footage of himself maybe giving deeper insight into the music but it was pretty top level info we have all seen before.
Overall I did enjoy it as any Michael fan will. But in terms of directing of this documentary it could of been better I have watched other recent music documentaries that are far better than this as an example the story telling of Mili Vanilli documentary was fantastic.
The Exorcist: Believer (2023)
I tried to like it but was ultimately disappointed
I just finished watching this film and I went into it hoping for the best however was ultimately disappointed pretty badly.
So you know the rating you see as of this review around 5 is pretty accurate. It's average at best.
So the big question is before you watch this film. Did you watch the original and thought it was one of the best horror flicks for its time? If so you should probably stop right here and don't go waste your time with this sequel. You will 100% be disappointed.
If you have never watched the original movie then you might think it's ok. As much as the hype surrounding this film was meant to be a worthy sequel to the original it's not. Not even Ellen Burstyn could save this film. Oh and did I forget to mention I was under the impression Regan aka Linda Blair is in it for a whole 30 seconds...... That's it. Lol
Let's talk about this film. The director probably tried his best to do the original film justice with good intentions but just like his attempt with the Halloween reboot it failed as well. Let's call a spade a spade green in not a great director period. He lacks depth and a true understanding how to bring out the best from his actors. The acting is superficial from all parties I believe the story doesn't allow for character growth properly so it seems rushed.
Supposedly from reading some news prior to the release of the movie green boasted how he wanted to focus on the sound FX and make sure they were as good as the original film. If you watched the original you will know what I'm talking about there is no question that the sound FX from the original film was probably the scariest part of the entire film. Green failed to even come close to how the original film sound was done by friedkin.
The make up was terrible and the cgi was unnecessary. Having not one but two girls possessed was a bad idea. Why?
So was this film scary even as a standalone film disregarding and comparing it to the original. Short answer no, there is very few scary parts and even then it was nothing to be afraid of. If you wanna go and see a worthy film like the original exorcist film go watch The exorcism of Emily Rose.
The Blair Witch Project (1999)
An original masterpiece that has to be watched
I have vivid memories watching this movie and man did it scare the hell out of me.
It was with some high school friends on a day we jigged school. It was on a VCD from overseas It was actually at a time it wasn't even released in Australia. When we started watching it we actually thought it was a home video and not a movie.
For its time the way this movie was made was brand new and unique. Seeing that now over 20 years later it holds a Guinness record for highest gross per dollar is a testament how much of an impact it had.
This is a must see.
From Fat Lolli to 6 Pack Lolli: The Ultimate Transformation Story (2020)
Inspiring but......
No one can deny that Anthony has made a massive transformation that potentially saved his life.
Like other reviewers the thing that I found was that having money behind you will help you achieve these goals much easier.
At the beginning he boasts about how successful he was in business but that he struggled all his life with his weight. Some reviewers have said this is an ego trip. It is not, you cannot judge someone for telling a story and then saying its an ego trip. If he was lying then I guess that would be a bad thing, but just because he worked hard in business and made money does not make him egotistical. I did not feel at any point he had an ego, there was a lot of warmth and compassion behind everything.
What I did have an issue with was the fact that he had a lot of money behind him, to the point that he had dieticians following him around hourly looking after him. He pretty much did not have to go to work anymore, he had time on his hands which a lot of people do not have the luxury of.
As some other reviewers said, it would be good to see a real life person, working 40 hours a day, kids, wife, morgage, pressures of life and how they overcame obstacles to achieve goals without millions of dollars behind them.
Overall thou, when you take that out of the equation, the documentary is good, and inspirational and had good intentions.
Ravers (2018)
B grade, raveploitation at its best...
Now imagine a rave party, drugs and ravers turning into mutants
..... hahaha.
This is what this film is about.
I loved it. Super original. You need to love b grade style horror, if not you will hate this film.
The special effects are on point. The music is great, story line super original.
I want more more more....
The Exorcist (2016)
I tried my best to love this....
Ok.....so I am doing my absolute best to love this.... first off I am a hard-core fan of this movie the original 73 movie... no doubt still one of the best cinema in this genre ever created.
The only reason I can give this an average score and no less is because I feel guilty as a fan to give it any less.
Sometimes you just can't mess with something 4 decades later and something to epic. The story of Regan is just that, the story was told and unless Linda Blair stars as Regan, and William friedkin directs it. It just won't live up to your expectations.
Jexi (2019)
Yeah I agree pretty lame
So here is a movie that is trying to be like the stunning movie 'her' ..... If you haven't watched it I urge you to watch it.
The story in a nutshell tries to tell the story of how much we rely on artificial intelligence. Facebook, social media etc.... But sorry does a really bad job at it...
The story line is lame.... The acting is ok but just doesn't hit the right chord.
There is no depth to this movie. It is what it is. Don't expect to be overwhelmed.
If you want to see something similar to this movie but will completely blow your mind go see 'her' with Joaquin Phoenix..... That will blow your mind.
Brain Damage (1988)
The most original 80s comedy horror of it time ...
Let's do it...... 80 comedy horror ... The story line is camp and the most original you will see... Some little worm that looks like a piece of crap that talks ...... That injects some LSD type substance to its host and loves to eat brains .... Wowwwww.... Nothing comes close to originality I watched this growing up sticks out in my mind as a favourite watched it again 20 years on just as messed up as the first time ... Love it....
Joker (2019)
Yessssssss
I'll say it again. Mr phoenix deserves a Oscar for this role. What a performer. This is the story of how and why the joker was created. It needed to be told. I am so glad the director choose Joaquin he is probably one of the most underrated actors out there. This movie was awesome.
American Son (2019)
Gripping.... Annoying.... Loved it....
It's funny I read a few reviews you read one that gives it a 1 out of 10 then the next is a 10 out of 10. This shows that this type of film will appeal to certain people and not to others. Some will say it's 2 people in a room and it's annoying. Some will say it's a masterpiece to pull off something like this.
The truth is I came into it without any knowledge or expectations at all the fact that a story can be told in one location for 90 minutes with emotional buildup and story telling then give a smashing down turn without any action, any CGI, any other location other than the room they are in shows that big budget mean nothing at all.
If the movie made you feel annoyed, angry, by the character development then this is exactly what the directors wanted you to feel. It is not because it's a movie.
The truth is character development is not suppose to conform to what you think is right or wrong, go into it with an open mind and know not all people think the same way as you, yet the truth is you can put yourself in this situation and the story may of taken a different path but this is just one of those paths and it's fantastic.
The ending blew my mind. For what it was this movie deserves a good 9 out of 10 in my books highly recommended.
Night of Something Strange (2016)
1980's camp b grade horror spectacular
I had zero expectations and it delivered on bucket loads. The negative reviews after just because they never understood or were into these types of horror gore fest types of movies from the 80s.
For once I didn't see CGI for most of the makeup. The special effects were awesome, real blood, real latex, real robotics... awesome.
Watch it if you loved the 80s gore. It's funny, over the top, and will make.
I WANT TO SEE MORE OF THIS.
Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019)
Not your typical Fast and Furious movie...
I love the rock, and I also love Statham.
But this is just not a Fast and Furious movie without Diesel and the rest of the gang.
I was expecting more. The movie missed the mark for me, it is a good action flick but that's about it, it is not a Fast and Furious movie you think it might be.
I was a bit disappointed overall to be honest.
I really wanted to like it more, lets hope Fast and Furious 9 brings back the melted cheese.
Her (2013)
The future is now...
Being exposed to the world of information technology I can confidently say after watching this movie.... The future is now.
We are maybe 5 to 10 years away from the reality that this movie portrays which makes it all the more realistic.
AI is already here and will be exponentially growing one the next decade.
If you want another small glimpse into that is already being developed search up neuralink by Elon mask then tell me this movie is actually not in the to far distant future.
Great movie..... Blew my mind.
Ronnie Coleman: The King (2018)
Such a good doco
For the first time you get to see the real Ronnie Coleman. In him tribulations and pain. An uncanny doco account of him fame to glory. If you want to achieve gayness be prepared for the hardship that follows. Loved this doco.
The Intern (2015)
I actually really loved this movie
Watched this with no intentions of what it was about, not even seeing a trailer.
Great, feel good movie without being over the top.
Deniro pulls of a great role as a fatherly figure who has experience and eventually pulls Anne thru most of her turmoils.
Im actually really surprised to see so many haters. I myself can be very critical, but this movie delivered for what it was set out to be.
Deniro shows that he can be versatile and is a great actor. Anne is great also she has done roles like this before.
I really liked the start up business story and bringing someone like deniro as quirky as it seems has some real good messages.
I guess some critics are just very superficial or had certain expectations coming into it before they watched it.
Nightcrawler (2014)
Captivating, Dark thriller
I wanted to watch something on Netflix and i did a quick search in Google for TOP MOVIES 2014, Rotten Tomatoes had this movie ranked pretty high.
I had no hopes, no expectations.
This movie blew me away. I have actually found a new found respect for Jake as an actor.
I generally do like thrillers / suspense, so it was no surprise i ended up liking this one.
However, the character Jake builds within the movie is immaculate.
This movie does not feel like 'hollywood' at all, yet it certainly does not feel 'b'grade either. Directing, character building, story is fantastic.
I highly recommend you go into this with little to no expectations. Oops maybe reading this review already gave you high expectations. :)
This Is the End (2013)
A fresh original movie that exceeded my expectations
I do not often give reviews. However in this case i will, the current ratings in IMDb 7.3 is just about right, the movie is an original and will become a classic in time.
There is not much to not like about this film, Seth rogan and his clan (you will instantly be familiar with from other films) play themselves which i found exciting. Its not usual that you will see an actors play themselves this in itself was refreshing.
What starts off as a light comedy turns into a full on movie on what Armageddon would be like through the eyes of Seth rogan. The best i can describe this movie is similar effect to From Dusk Till Dawn....
The special effects were surprisingly great, almost felt like Diablo (the game) in real life....
I really did enjoy this film to the point im going to watch it again, if your looking for a fresh comedy / horror / sci-fi then give this a go.
8/10
Evil Dead (2013)
Good but don't expect something better than the original
In a nutshell its 'Good' and worth a watch, but do not watch it expecting more than the original.
I often cringe when they make a remake of an excellent film as more so than not they are a flop.
I did walk in with some level of expectations as i am a real fan of the original and i could not help but keep comparing it to the 80's version expecting similar scenes.
Evil dead remake is not a complete replica of the original, in fact its a different story with similar key plot elements. This is a good thing and gives a fresh take on the story of Evil Dead.
It's down falls ...
Where the movie lacks is in the story, i saw many mistakes and goofs as some have pointed out and the characters were not believable enough. I will say they sure can take punishment from the dead thou. I also thought that that the movie lacked in the sound effects department and also there is no sound track to the movie. Evil dead lacks in building a scary environment, the original was good at this and if you have watched it the last 15 minutes is fantastic.
It's high points ...
Gore, gore, gore it goes without saying that if your looking for gore you have come to the right place, some scenes will make your butt cheeks clench and it is clear why it was given an R18+ rating.
The special effects are great, the gore scenes are believable and it achieves to make the viewer react as they should if they were put into that situation.
Conclusion ...
Evil dead is worth watching, although you should watch it with less expectations to the original film. The gore and special effects is what makes up for the lack of storyline, half assed acting, mistakes and is why i have given it a 7/10
