The Protector (2018)
Let Me Entertain You
My watchlist on Netflix is fairly long, but I was curious when I came across The Protector. Even after I discovered it was a Turkish production with subtitles I liked its rating and decided to watch. I am very happy I did. Most of the dialogue is dubbed so you don't have to keep switching your eyes from the action to the subtitles. The plot is interesting. The characters are engaging. (Hakan does not initially portray a "superhero" ; that is refreshing. The female roles are strong, even minor ones. There is some comedic dialogue. Do I sound like I like this show? It has definitely hooked me! I am not Turkish or even European or Asian, nor am I a juvenile (I am a fan of Marvel Studios.). I don't understand why some reviewers think one's country should make a difference in whether one likes this show. The Protector is a wonderful fantasy that entertains and transports the viewer to a realm of good fighting evil. I look forward to its second season.
Catastrophe (2015)
Are They for Real?
It's not all laughs, and it's not all tears. Amazingly, this series is more real than most TV shows. The main characters don't play games with each other. They both have quirky lines that exhibit their anxiety and vulnerabilities in a life's situation of unplanned pregnancy and career change. Yet, they actually tell each other their feelings and fears. They often voice their unhappiness in a situation and call each other names--and still stay together and even marry. How adult is that? I'm talking about being a REAL adult, not the way many TV shows and movies portray adults as totally selfish and egocentric . The ensemble shows a group of people who are flawed yet still trying to live their lives as best they can. The humor is found in their flaws, but we treasure their humanity. I started watching this hoping it wasn't another TV show where the guy was clueless and the woman was the smart one. Happily, this is a TV show where no one is stupid, just real characters trying to make it through life without committing too much mayhem. This is a REALly good show.
