Civil War (2024)
A Star is Born
Oh dear. From the every introduction of a character one knows what is going to happen to them.
The rather splendid Sound Design and excellent use of silence cannot make up for the ugliness of the script and the futile inevitability of the ending.
Due to the shallowness of the character development it is hard to have any real feeling for them, combined with the utter stupidity of the situations they find themselves in and some horribly intrusive songs made me yearn for the Judy Garland version that didn't require so much over the top and indulgent violence.
Civil war delivers a very powerful message about Storytelling and how important it is. I left the cinema quite distraught that I had invested my time in this huge nonsense that does not deliver.
Kirsten Dunst is always watchable and Stephen McKinley Henderson dutifully goes through the motions of the seasoned Pro facing up to the winter of his years but is let down by the script.
We are all let down by the script. And no one gets to say "A star is born"!
Ted Lasso (2020)
When Hearts rule heads
I was advised by the whole workd and their mother to watch this.
Despite its good heart. It represents the lowest common denominator in comedy.
It did not make me laugh.
The so called "heart" of the writing is totally contrived and just plain horrible.
I am gobsmacked that this is regarded as good entertainment and funny. It says a lots for our industry that this has been embraced and I have to find another 189 characters to explain what I don't like about it.
The depiction of the female characters is woeful and I really worry that the idea of true comedy is lost.
Please look at proper comedies and then argue with me that this is anything but a "topical" nonsense.
Black Adam (2022)
A 66 year old's sadness.
I am shocked at the reviews celebrating this abysmal film.
Its standards insult Film makers and audiences alike.
I know Casts and Crews work so hard on every project and we've all worked even harder to turn a bad Film into something watchable but I found the "throw away" violence and inept narrative just too much.
This is only half a review because I walked out after 45 minutes.
One could argue I am too old to even consider watching a movie like this but I want Films to soar not constantly lower the lowest common denominator.
I've only given it 1/10 because a zero is not available.
I wish everyone involved all the very best with their next ventures and hope this sorry mess can be put behind them.
Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022)
I am really enjoying this
I cannot believe the negative reviews for this
I find it compelling with a rich soundtrack that gives the depth that some of the writing and acting sometimes lack.
I urge people to give it a view.
The Batman (2022)
Les Miserables meets Gotham
Relentlessly dismal, with some Casting that doesn't work and nowhere near as good as The Dark Knight or Batman Returns, the film delivers some spectacular Cinematic moments.
I urge everyone to see it as it deserves an audience but I just wish it wasn't quite so bleak (but folks shouldn't care what I or others think).
Go and see it, please.
The Power of the Dog (2021)
Ugly
Just an ugly, unattractive film with run of the mill performances. Please see Dances with Wolves, Gunfight at the OK Corral or even Carry on Cowboy.
I know this takes place in the 1920s but all it evoked for me
"Why am I watching this?".
All the best shots are stolen from John Ford.
Please try Duel at Diablo.
No Time to Die (2021)
This is a magnificent film
No Time To Die is a superbly well made James Bond film.
There is not a single weak performance.
The music works wonderfully well.
The emotional depth of the film is extremely moving.
The most important part of the film and its true heart is the performances of its 2 Children.
They are fantastic.
Please see this film and ignore the, quite frankly, ridiculous reviews on here.
The only reason I didn't give the film a 10 is the choice of The Faroe Islands as a location. A country that slaughters thousands of dolphins annually should no be showcased on such a world wide phenomenon.
Tina and Bobby (2017)
Truly awful
Everything is wrong. The casting, the score, the production design.
Everything.
So very disappointed.
Just Mercy (2019)
A film should inspire to find out more
I am constantly amazed when people criticise a film because it "doesn't follow the book" or it "bends facts for the sake of the story".
For me a film should inspire!!
Just Mercy (the film) has moved me to find out more about history I did not know, in the same way "Zulu" inspired me to visit South Africa and learn the truth of the Zulu wars.
Just Mercy is a superb film that had me screaming at the screen and has inspired me to read and learn more about another dark chapter in our World's legal history.
A superbly told film that made me want to learn more.
Big Stone Gap (2014)
Focus
I wanted to like this film but every shot has a problem for me that I'm not sure what should be in focus.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
A World of synthetic images and emotion
There is some amazing cgi in this movie but the feeling of ever smouldering "I'm going to be a hero" look soon betrayed the shallowness of this epic "all for one, one for all" nonsense.
A score that does not deliver and the utter nonsense logic of "time interference" really lost my suspension of disbelief.
I adored the last Thor movie but Holding out for Too many Heroes proved too shallow and nowhere near as Compelling as "LOTR - Return of the King".
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Superb fun.
I really, really can't believe some of the negative reviews.
A high energy ride that I really enjoyed. The music is rousing and the performances far exceeded my expectations. Please see this film.
Ra.One (2011)
A film with Hart and Heart
I cannot believe some of the negative reviews for this film. It has everything. action, love, great music, a car chase to rival any James Bond or action movie and most importantly it has heart. The love of a father and a son. I rarely read reviews because I am constantly staggered how little they mean in reality. I urge everyone to see this film to be entertained and thrilled. I adored 'My Name is Khan' and Ra.One is now also on my list of my favourite films A great night out with a journey that will carry you through every emotion. I wanted to type in capitals to go and see this film but IMDb told me I am not allowed to shout so I have restricted myself to repeating my encouragement for everyone to go and see Ra. One.
