There was not a dry eye in the theater...

The acting runs from very good to brilliant. The description of the story line was off putting for me but as we had festival tickets we were committed to seeing it. This is really the story of Elsie, a grown child of a flamboyant mother whose last wish, as she was dying of cancer, was that her daughter should seek out each of her five previous husbands and give them a fifth of her ashes to scatter. The personalities of her previous partners are all very different. Through her interactions with each of them, who she hasn't seen for years, Elsie comes to terms with her relationship with her mother and herself. It is such an emotional rendering / surrendering, Elsie's flaws and difficulties are accepted and embraced. This is a heartfelt telling of a difficult story. It is sensitive, beautiful and ultimately uplifting. The film is in French and we saw it with subtitles. Absolutely superb!

How bad can something be?
19 February 2023
This is so awful, it is not even funny awful. It is a waste of time, celluloid, The effects are so bad, they would not have even passed for awful in Ed Wood's world. It makes Birdemic look like an intellectual exercise. Spare yourself this pain and nail your hands to the floor with a nailgun... or have someone else do it for you. Bang your head against a wall of nails Beg your mother for forgiveness for wasting two hours of your precious life. There is no storyline to speak of. And someone trying to milk a few bucks more has listed it as a comedy as well. There are no laughs. It is not frightening. It is just trash through and through. Even the blood looks fake. You're welcome!

A heartwarming, brilliant story of a couple's journey into later life!

I was shocked to see the low rating this film has received here. It is a brilliant flick that left everyone in the packed audience on the verge of tears. The film, based on a true story, is a about a man who sets to building a home that is suitable for his wife with early signs of dementia. An independent sort, he mills his own lumber and builds the home to the exacting standards he learned from his father. He soon runs afoul of the county building inspector. The sterling performance of James Cromwell is one that will echo with you for weeks after viewing. Bujold's disjointed performance perfectly captures the supreme loss of dementia, a silent invader that steals the self. Not in any way smarmy but perhaps suited to an older viewer.

Get out the hankies boys and girls!

Few actors today have the breadth of Jennifer Connelly. She never shirks from difficult roles. From Mullholland Falls to Little Children or The House Of Sand and Fog and now this, she plays her characters convincingly as though she owns them in her heart. She never takes it over the top. Ed Harris' character is a cardboard cop and is well done given the parameters of the role. This movie is a brilliant portrait of a mentally challenged mom trying to make the best in this world for her son. Harrison Gilbertson is very good as her boy. Emma Roberts as his girlfriend does a great job as a dutiful Mormon 16 year old. Amy Madigan is convincing as Ed Harris' wife. See it with an open heart and this movie will transport you. Brilliant.
