Bay of Fires (2023)
Just not believable
So let me get this straight. This woman's husband is trying to kill her so a mysterious stranger rescues her and tells her to relocate to a small town in Tassy where a house has already been purchased for her. And the woman just goes ahead and does it. She doesn't ask for details of who the mysterious woman is, what's going on....she just does it. And her kids ask no questions either. They just go too. Then the town she moves to has about six residents even though the buildings in the main drag are large and substantial. And all the residents are super weird.
If you're going to set up a plot in the first episode it needs to be just slightly believable. This isn't. It's written by the same guy that did Seachange and in a way it's kind of a repeat of that synopsis except that Seachange was believable. This isn't. I wouldn't bother.
Our House (2022)
Totally unbelievable plot
As with so many modern drama mini series this one starts out with a fascinating premise, that a woman arrives home to find strangers moving into her house which has been totally emptied of her furniture and possessions. Is this a twilight zone situation or is it real? As it unfolds we learn that her husband had sold the house behind her back. So far an interesting and intriguing idea. But once it needs to be developed the wheels fall off completely. The entire plot is totally unbelievable and full of holes and the ending is just awful. For this kind of thriller to work it needs a solid foundation in realism. This one falls way short. Avoid.
Joe Versus the Volcano (1990)
Without doubt the stupidest movie ever made
Meg is very cute and Tom plays Tom Hanks very well but gees this movie is stupid. It's like they just made it up as they went along
Breeders (2020)
Awful
We only lasted 15 minutes into this truly awful "comedy". We were drawn by the inclusion of the lead actors whom we have really enjoyed in other shows. But in this show the characters they play are just horrible human beings. Yes, children can be exasperating but making snarky comments to each other about them and screaming at them with every second word the F word is not only hard to watch but is just not the way real parents behave. A good comedy requires light and shade. This thing is all shade and the characters are impossible to warm too.
Just William (2010)
Nicely interpreted but why always the 1950s?
This is a very well done version of the William books with a great cast and lovely period charm. But I can't help but wonder why adaptation of these books seem to be always set in the 1950s. The bulk of the William stories were written in the 1920s 30s and 40s and have a very different character to that which is presented here.
For most of the William stories the Browns lived in a fairly substantial house with servants. By comparison they are seen here in a quite small suburban dwelling. The sister Ethel in the books is an attractive and intelligent young woman. In this series she is portrayed as just a bit of a tart and not too bright. The boys themselves are very well cast. William himself is not quite as cunning as he is in the books but the portrayal otherwise is very good.
Overall a nice adaptation but I would love to see one set earlier in the 20th century
Ladies in Black (2018)
A bit of a plot would've been nice
What a boring movie. Virtually no character development and nothing that would pass for a plot. Just a bunch of random scenes and shots of Sydney in the fifties. Biggest drama is a 16 year old who doesn't like her name because it sounds like a boys name and a woman whose husband goes off for a couple of weeks. What a shocker.
