Bridesmaids (2011)
flush it.
my wife and I sat through this very very unfunny movie absolutely unable to understand what anyone found appealing in it. it was unfunny in so many ways as to define description. I don't ever even want to know anyone who liked this movie. The movie was as ugly as the bride's dress and all i can say is that i am happy for all the actors who didn't get to do this movie. I am sorry but vulgar material is vulgar and guess what not really funny. vulgar it is not funny with guys and not funny with women or children. vulgar is called vulgar because it is crude and unfunny. and profanity from children does not leave people rolling in the isles either. disrespectful and course language is not a million laughs ( hello Mr Aptow ) to most folks so why do we have to listen to it in movies.
Bug (2006)
a great play a good movie
I was not expecting a movie that i would enjoy as much as this one based on the title and the suggestion that this was a "horror" movie....But Ashley Judd gave a marvelous performance here... she is a terrific actress....how nice to see a movie with smart dialog....well worth watching a second time to appreciate the way the story builds....i hope this movie gets the audience it deserves....not the usual retards drawn to slasher flicks. i don't know how you advertise a movie that has the "look" of the "horror' genre but the savvy of a Broadway theater piece. perhaps the fact that it is available on DVD will mean that more people will see it and if they like it suggest it to friends. I know i certainly will. Everyone associated with BUG deserves a big thanks for getting the film made...
A Prairie Home Companion 30th Broadcast Season Celebration (2004)
good time radio makes good time video
after suffering through the Altman movie this was a breath of very fresh air....why in the world did director Robert Altman leave out a Lake Woebegon monologue while adding that whole business with a "real" Guy Noir. But less said about the creaky "plot" the better. It is hard to believe that Garrison Kellar who was credited as a co-writer actually wrote any of that lame dialog. Most of the humor wasn't funny. as for the well known faces which appeared in the Altman movie none of them had as much singing talent as the radio performers and their contrived "back story" was as interesting as yesterdays newspaper. I think most critics were much to generous in their reviews of this movie because of the respect they share for the body of his work....and it is just a shame that few people will see the movie of the actual 30th Anniversary show which was excellent.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
a bore
any movie in which the boys wear more lipstick than the girls is for me off to a bad start.....what is wrong with these make up people, don't they look at the film. anyway the CGI bits were fun but but it made the movie look like a video game on the X box....by contrast the outdoor shots were like being doused by a bucket of ice water...they looked terribly out of place. the poor actors looked like a bunch of silly people dressed up for a fair who got lost looking for the food court. as for the plot....what a bunch of nonsense....and what about that poor girl that died in that maze....nobody even mentioned that she never made it back...not even those strange girls in blue who by the way were if anything even less interesting than the rest of the unattractive cast of characters...and what a waste of the real talent...i swear some of the "bits" in the movie were so bad they looked like they were made by a ten year old with his very own video camera...stick that, 13 year old....a ten year old would have done it with less pretentiousness..
Yes (2004)
so so
I would have enjoyed YES more if i had merely listened to it. Watching it was less than satisfying and sometimes painful. The camera work was right out of film school and was annoying. Granted some location photography was excellent....the colors and costume and locations obviously well thought out. The trouble for me was that I did not and could not give a hoot about the lovers.....boring was the thought that most often came to mind. That and i kept picturing other actors in those roles, and then i'd be reminded of other movies that had a similar story line but were so much more fun to watch. On a positive note, I enjoyed the young woman who began and closed the movie...the maid, but kept wishing the movie had been about her.
