I won't lie, I was a little wary of Disney taking on the reins to Doctor Who. I worried that they'd sand down the edges, dumb it down, and play safe. And boy, those first two episodes did not alleviate my fears. 4th wall breaks, a tone that was way too cute, and a breeziness that felt way too tame.
But WOW did they turn it around with episodes 3-5. A tension filled bottle episode, a weirdo folk horror fable, and then an absolute gut punch with the ending of Dot and Bubble.
DW has always been inconsistent, so I don't know why I expected differently, but I'm glad to say the show is in safe hands with Davies back at the helm. Is every episode going to blow you away? Nah. But in true Doctor Who fashion, the lows might be low but the highs are SKY HIGH. Ncuti effortlessly slides into the role like a seasoned veteran, Ruby is a wonderful companion, and the storytelling (while inconsistent) delivers on the shocks and twists fans have come to expect.
Rocky start, but this cosmic joyride is really hitting its stride. Excited to see where it goes!
