Murder on the Home Front (2013)
I was disappointed with the production
I was disappointed with this production. It was more like those B films that Hollywood put out in the 40's and 50's. I frankly did not care for the leads since they had no charisma. Also the look of the film was not sharp. Some of the acting was amateurish also especially the owner of the club. He was straight out of a B movie. The club scenes I suppose were meant to interesting but again I kept thinking that look like something Monogram and even Republic studios would have put out. What's will that guy constantly dancing on stage to the music. Sorry I am a big supporter of British programs but this just did live up to stuff. I see it was made by Carnival Films and not the BBC
Standing Room Only: Vanities (1981)
"Vanities" now made into a musical
David Kirshenbaum has now composed the music and lyrics to Jack Heifner's "Vanities". It follows the life of three girls very closely to the play with great music of the era. The staging is just the three girls Mary, Joanne and Kathy at the gym practicing their cheer leading during that faithful day in Novemeber 1963. It follows thru to the Vietnam years when the three are in college and ends on a luxurious penthouse terrace in New York eleven years later. The three singers are all New York trained and each have a unique voice when singing '60s, '70s style songs. The musical had its world premiere last night at Mountain View, California and hopefully Mr. Kirshenbaum will take it to off Broadway.
Terror in the Tropics (2006)
You got to be kidding
Take it from me as a camera man who worked for Republic Studios from 1946 to 1950 and then Warners Bros and Paramount from 1950 to 1993, this is a piece of crap. Sure it would be great to show it to your favorite friends at a house party but to try to sell this on a DVD is absolutely ridicious.
I have seen bad acting in my day but this is NO acting. The hero is almost laughable and he really thinks he is something judging from his comments on the specials. I hate to see his fan club. The old films did not jive with the action in many of the scenes. What the hell was that garden scene with three of worst actresses. I never seen a garden on a ship. They could not even emote. I would not mind it if they could have once ounce of acting but the only one was the guy with the Translvanian accent. I am sorry but this is not a clever film as some persons are stating. I would think horror film buffs would be insulted by this piece of film.
Charles II: The Power & the Passion (2003)
Americans called it "The Last King" on its premiere tonight
The film made its United States debut tonight on Arts and Entertainment Network with many commercials so I don't know if there were scenes cut from the BBC edition. The look of the film was beautiful and Rufus Sewell was the perfect Charles II. As an American, I found it very interesting about the Catholic vrs Protestant situation. As a student of English history, I found it gave a fair balance on both sides. I believe the Catholic band on those of the faith could not hold office until the 19th Century.
Rupert Graves who I usually see in modern films looked a little out of place with all those wigs but I am just use to seeing him either on stage or in modern films.
How can anyone forget those eyes of Mr. Sewell. This is his trade mark. I had put it on tape and so I could fast forward the commercals. Thank God for that. There must have been 30 commercals during the four hour telecast.
The Maids (1975)
"The Maids" on television
Thank God for the Trio network who are showing the American Express film series every Saturday night. I remember seeing the movie in 1974 when it played only two nights at the Metro Theatre. It was through the AmEx and you purchased tickets via subscription. It was the only way we theater buffs could see some great plays on film.
"The Maid" was on Trio recently and I taped it for later viewing. After watching Glenda Jackson and Susannah York, one can see one of the great acting duos in the 20th Century. However I was mesmerized by the performance of Vivien Merchant as their employer. This was also a great piece of acting. I will keep this tape to watch over again.
