Otis (2008)
An homage to Last House on the Left?
This movie has a lot of references to Last House on the Left that I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt of paying homage rather than ripping it off.
A girl is kidnap, beaten and tortured and then the parents get revenge. Last House on the Left 2 girls get kidnapped and killed and one set of parents get revenge. Even the 'no bra' comment by the dad is in both.
In Last House on the Left, the parents get dressed up in medical gear before they're about to torture one of the killers (turns out to be a dream of the killers) in Otis, they actually dress up in medical clothes. The dad is a doctor in LHotL, and the mom's a nurse in Otis.
Law enforcement in both movies are portrayed as bumbling idiots. And the song selections play a big role too.
So with all of this, it has to be homage since it's not too subtle. And I'm sure the director probably has mentioned it. But I'm not going to take a bunch of points off for this.
Otis does a good job of making the main villain seem creepy but lovable at the same time, which I'm sure was the point. The acting was pretty decent, mostly well known actors. My biggest complaint is a the brother. He annoyed the crap out of me. I wondered if he had any clue what he was referencing when he kept choosing a different weapon or when he says the line "the horror. the horror". The acting had a good mix comedic moments sprinkled in the mix.
The biggest thing that stuck out to me was the song choices for certain scenes. The opening scene with the Shocking Blue's Venus and the dance scene with BoC's Don't Fear the Reaper were great, made it memorable.
This was a horror-comedy, I wasn't expecting it to be some masterpiece. So with that mind frame, I was able to enjoy it for what it was.
Khon len khong (2004)
Not as Bad as a 4.6 rating
But only as high as a 6.
First off, I have to say that my copy of the DVD will not play the original Thai audio, so I am stuck with the horrible English overdubs. I kept the subtitles on anyways but had to laugh at how different they were from the spoken lines. Sometimes the dialogue was more detailed and sometimes the subtitles were.
So due to the fact I had to listen to the overdubbed version, I cannot comment on the acting as a whole. Most of the physical acting was decent, with body language and whatnot, but nothing really stood out.
The Story: Pretty decent revenge/black magic story. The woman has an affair with a married man, gets pregnant, wants hush money, gets gang raped by the married mans friends, demands more money, gets bitch slapped around and then wants revenge. You're sort of torn about how you're supposed to feel about the main girl. She's sort of a slut and seems a bit like a gold digger, but she was also cast aside by the baby's daddy and raped by his friends. So you can see why she wants revenge but not to the extent she takes it, which is why she makes a good villain. She's a very pretty girl but can definitely pull off the evil look to her. The story gets a bit confusing at first since a lot happens in such a quick time with little explanation, but picks up a bit more later. She kills one part of the family and then moves on to the other side (It' sort of confusing to explain). You never connect with any of the characters except for Nam (the other main girl), so when a character dies, big deal. The twist (if you can call it that) is a bit weird, but very typical for a horror film. The little albino girl (or maybe she was just Swedish) was a bit creepy which I'm sure was their intentions. What, or who, the albino girl represented can be disputed. I won't go into detail as not to spoil too much.
Now for some of the technical aspects. Some of the graphics were very bad, but I'm guessing this was somewhat a low budget so understandable. The physical graphics as in the gore (spitting up bloody razors, nails coming out of the head, the eels, stabbing, etc) was pretty good, something that if was digitalized, would have made this worse. Some shots were very well done but a lot seemed amateurish.
Now was it entertaining? Yes, it was. Worth a rent if you can deal with cheesy horror films. Just make sure the Thai audio track works, or you may just laugh a lot at the English overdubs (especially the scene where the mother is being haunted by the previous family killed by the girl).
6 out of 10 for being entertaining, with some good gore and a decent story
Feast (2005)
Well worth the $5 for the DVD
After hearing about the Project Greenlight show and seeing the trailer for Feast, I've been wanting to check it out but never have. So two days after Halloween '08 I decided to buy Feast for $5 at Wal-Mart. If you're a fan of horror-comedies or just horror films in general, buy this, it's $5 you cheap bastards!
Now on to the actual movie. After I watched it, I drew immediate comparisons to Evil Dead. Instead of the cabin, it's a bar (small confined area). Instead of the woods, it's a desert (isolated). Instead of the woods sexually assaulting a female, it's a little monster (this almost had me in tears I was laughing so hard, that's right I laughed at sexual assault). Instead of deadites, it's some weird beast (who looks like a mixture of the creature from Alien and my date last night, I mean a piranha). Plenty of over the top blood spillage, excessive gore and great comedic moments. Obviously the stories aren't the same and I don't think Feast was all well shot as Evil Dead. But for being a low budget horror film, it did a good job.
I hate most new horror films due to the fact it tries to go for just shock value and no substance. Feast suffers from this slightly since the story slightly lacks, but does a good job of just jumping right into the thick of it. You don't really get a feel for any of the characters so when one dies, you're like 'meh'. I do like the still frames they did and gave a mini character bio with the life expectancies. The first 15 minutes sets the tone for the movie and you don't have some horrible build-up with a huge letdown twist, the action starts almost immediately.
A lot of the deaths tried to be non-cliché but came off as somewhat clichéd which is still somewhat a breath of fresh air. You don't really know who's going to live or die. In fact Henry Rollins' character says during the movie that no one's died in awhile so it's about time someone does, or something along those lines. Speaking of Henry Rollins, not a good actor, but is a pretty funny guy (enjoyed his stand-up and show along with his music). The comedic moments were well timed and it made sure that the viewers knew it was a horror-comedy and not just a laughably bad horror film.
So again, $5, good horror-comedy, lots of blood and some hot chicks ........ oh and a monster wang, great touch.
Evil Dead: Hail to the King (2000)
Error?
In the book for the game it says Ash lost his hand on his first trip to the cabin...... wasn't it in Evil Dead 2 that Ash cut off his hand? Does this mean Sam intended Evil Dead 2 to be a remake? I've heard arguments from both side but no solid proof.

I copied and paste it to appease IMDb's guidelines saying I need at least 10 lines.
