A lovely love story!

Indian cinema is progressing in rapid speed. Gone are the cheesy rom-coms and over the top action movies. Still, it's nice to see an older story in new treatment with some up to date situations and characters. Ayan Mukherjee's Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani may not be as path breaking as his first venture Wake Up Sid, but it still manages to keep the viewer intrigued.

Truth is, if you've had a stressful week and want a full on entertainer that not only enlightens but also educates about life - YJHD is absolutely what you need.

Naina is a nerd who has spent most of her life in books and probably has done nothing exciting in her life. She one day bumps in to Aditi who is a carefree girl about to go on an adventurous trip with friends Bunny and Avi. A boring Naina falls for the spontaneous Bunny but for reasons is not able to tell him, mainly due to the fact that he wants to travel the world and live life at full speed. It's 8 years later and one of the friends is getting married. Back comes Bunny, Naina and feelings...

YJHD has many moments that make you smile or teary-eyed. The moments with Ranbir-Deepika are all classic! The chemistry between the 4 actors is noteworthy.

The best thing about the movie is the chemistry between the lead pair. Notches above than what they did during their first film together Bachna Ae Haseeno.

Drawbacks? Yes, a few. First off, the Ghagra song featuring the evergreen Madhuri Dixit is not needed and if it was to go in the film, it should have been better placed. Also, Ranbir's relationship with his stepmom should have been better explained.

Pritam's music is fantastic. Every song is awesome. Badtameez Dil, Balam Pitchkaari, Ghagra, Dilliwali Girlfriend, Kabira, Subhanallah etc are all chartbuster material.

The writing is brilliant for the most part.Especially in the first half.

Ayan Mukherjee's direction is first rate. This is a bigger film than his last and he's handled such a big task so well. Looking forward to his next.

Aditiya Roy Kapoor and Kalki are perfect for their roles. They are just brilliant in every frame. Supporting cast is good too.

All said and done, it's the lead pair that take this film to a whole 'nother level. It's really what you take back with you. Ranbir Kapoor is charming as ever and of course, he's the best of his generation when it comes to acting. Deepika springs a surprise here and she looks stunning even in specs. This is her best act yet.

Overall, YJHD is an entertainer all the way. Watch it for a smile.

Just like Shimmit Amin's past 2 ventures, Rocket Singh starts as a colorless, bland film. However, once one starts to go deep into the narrative, the viewer sees different colors. Rocket Singh is unconventional, yet very conventional and that's what works about it!

Harpreet Singh Bedi, just graduated from college with barely passing grades, is applying for a job as a salesman at AYS. He gets the job, but his naive nature gets him into trouble and fired from the company. This leads him to venture into his own company as a competitor of the same company that fired him.

A section of viewers not aware of the business/sales world may not relate to the idea of the movie. Still, it's a very gripping screenplay.

Some scenes to look out for:

  • Harpreet's first interview scene - Harpreet's confrontation scenes with Puri - Harpreet's plan to compete with AYS - Climax


Music is disappointing and songs weren't needed.

Writing is top notch and Jaideep Sahni's dialogues are intelligent and brilliant.

Shimit Amin's direction is excellent of course.

Ranbir Kapoor is brilliant as the naive Harpreet Bedi. The film belongs to him.

Overall, a great experience and inspirational movie.

Gives a lethal message

Rajkumar Santoshi's Ghatak makes its point loud and clear. However, it's not preachy and provides a proper plot with entertainment. Still, I feel this is one of his most underrated pictures. This was the third film with the hit trio of Rajkumar Santoshi, Sunny Deol and Amrish Puri. How one wishes they did more films together after that.

Shambu Nath is sick and needs treatment. His adopted son, Kashi takes him to mumbai to live with Shambu's real son and family. After a few days, Kashi notices something about the people in the city. He notices that they fear the gangster of that area by the name of Kathiya. One circumstances leads to another and Kashi has found himself in a war with Kathiya. However, the war is more than just a war against a gangster, Kashi is fighting against cowardice.

The best thing about the film is that it's not boring and keeps the viewer intrigued all through. Not to forget, the movie has a handful of hard-hitting scenes.

-The murder of Sachdev in the beginning. -Sunny's first scene with Danny -Danny torturing Sunny and Amrish -Sunny's revenge -Climax

However, the best scenes involve Sunny Deol and Amrish Puri together. The scene when Sunny breaks down in front of his dying father is heart-breaking.

Music is good.

Rajkumar Santoshi's direction is excellent and there's no doubt on how good of a director he is when he has the right script.

All the actors play their part perfectly. Tinnu Annand, Mukesh Rishi etc. All are great. Meenakshi is also first rate.

However, the 3 performances that make Ghatak special are of Sunny Deol, Amrish Puri and Danny. Sunny Deol is perfect for the role of the fearless man trying to live a decent life. He proves how underrated he is an actor. Amrish Puri is just brilliant! He's loud when required and controlled when he needs to be. A perfect act. Danny is a strong villain, and to go up against a strong hero such as Sunny, one needs a villain strong as Danny.

Overall, a great story about the underdog's fight against a very scared society. Recommended!

I Hope!

There's a particular scene in The Shawshank Redemption where Andy is just sitting there listening to random opera music. Where Any feels free and full of hope. That scene full of brilliance defines the whole movie. If one analyzes this movie, many themes arise. A theme of hope, a theme of redemption, a theme of second chance, a theme of bonding or even themes of friendship. If you see the movie the first time, you see it through the eyes of Andy but the second time, one realizes it's really the story of Redd and his redemption.

Andy is a successful banker and is guilty of murdering his wife. He is sentenced for life in Shawshank Prison. During his sentencing he stumbles upon many inmates and one of them ends up being his friend Redd. During his sentencing Andy does taxes for the Guards and helps the warden in some illegal activities. The moments in those many years is what makes Shawshank.

The movie is full of unforgettable moments and unforgettable characters. All characters are well developed and well written. What works most is that the movie has a simple story yet the deepest meaning to it. The multiple themes are brilliantly depicted.

The climax is just heartwarming! The direction is flawless. Every sequence is brilliantly executed. It's a shame the Oscars ignored Frank Drabont.

Another plus point is the casting of the movie. Every actor suits the role to the T. Tim Robbins is just brilliant as Andy! He's nothing short of spectacular.

Bob Gunton is also another act to look out for. He's first rate. All the other actors are also flawless.

Having said that, a performance you take home with you is of the brilliant Morgan Freeman. It's really tough to describe in words how good of an act his was. One really wants to applaud him by the end of the screening.

Overall, Shawshank is a movie of a lifetime. Missing it is a crime!

Omkara (2006)

Langda Tyagi Bahu Bhalli!!!

Omkara starts out with a few colorful lines uttered by Langda Tyagi that catch your attention from the start. From there on, the viewer is glued to a story with hard hitting drama and even some out of life situations. Vishal Bharadwaj makes a desi Othello and he does full justice to the Shakespeare play. Honestly, nobody could have done a better job.

In modern day UP, India where there is outlaw rule. Omkara, a half Brahmin is out to marry a full Brahmin Dolly against her father's wishes. Alongside this, Omi is also to pick the new "Bhau Bhalli" since he is being promoted. When Omi picks Kesu, a youngster over his right hand man Langda - starts a story that consists of jealousy, intensity, drama, and passion.

There are too many brilliant sequences in Omkara. The first scene featuring Langda and Rajju is sheer brilliance. Not to forget the scene when Omi takes Dolly and the scenes between Omi and Dolly's father. The planning by Langda is first rate. The climax is of course shocking.

The screenplay in the second half does get a bit slow but the climax makes up for it.

Vishal Bharadwaj's music is underrated. Beedi being the best. However, other numbers are also excellent.

One of the best things about Omkara is the writing. Not just story and screenplay but also the dialogue. So real and yet hard hitting. Some of the best lines ever written.

Bharadwaj is a brilliant director and there is no question. However, with Omkara he proves he's unstoppable given an excellent story. His best work yet. One also has to give it up to him for casting every actor properly.

Ajay Devgan is perfect for the role and he shows dominance through the film. A terrific role for one of the finest actors India has ever produced. Brilliant. Vivek Oberoi is Effective but takes a backseat in the second half. Kareena Kapoor is subtle yet says so much with her character. Excellent. Konkona is another fabulous actress and here too she gives a first rate act. Naseer is as always. Bipasha is okay. Komal Tiwari is efficient as Dolly's father.

Another actor worth mentioning is Deepak Dobriyal as Rajju. Such a talent he is.

All said and done, taking Langda Tiyagi out of Omkara would make this film not even half as good. Saif Ali Khan gives his career best performance as the crippled evil mastermind. The dialect, expressions, lines, look - it's one of the best characters written in the Hindi film industry. There really isn't an adjective one can use to describe his performance. All I will say is that this act takes the movie notches higher than it already was.

Overall, a drama worth every penny. Watch it for the dialogue, the screenplay, the music, the actors - whatever you want. I do know that once you see it, you will watch it again just for Langda Tiyagi.

Barfi! (2012)

One Sweet Treat

Barfi is a simple story, tells some very simple lessons and in a very simple way. The simplicity of the story of some not so simple characters is what makes Barfi extraordinary. Barfi says that despite being considered abnormal by society; even the disabled have the normal issues of normal people. They're feelings are normal, they love, they hate and yes, they do laugh.

It's present day and the deaf-mute Murphy aka Barfi is breathing his last breaths. There are a few people to see him off including his first love, his current love and a crazy cop who was always after him. Why is this man so important? How did he manage to change lives? That's the story of Barfi.

Anurag Basu's film mesmerizes you into Barfi's world from the word go. The initial reels have you glued mainly due to Barfi's entertaining tactics. Not to forget that the screenplay starts on a unique note.

There are a number of well executed sequences in the movie. Barfi's intro, the scene's between Barfi and Shruti and between Barfi and Jilmil. A brilliant scene being the scene with Barfi explaining to Shruti on how he realizes they cannot be together and why. A brilliantly directed and enacted sequence.

There are minuses. The second half does drag in parts and not to forget the screenplay may confuse a few a bit. The whole murder mystery part also could have been better written.

One does have to give it up to Pritam who comes up with a brilliant score. Main Kya Karoon, Aashayein, Phir Le Aaya Dil are soothing and addictive to listen to. Kudos to Anurag Basu for placing the songs so well into the screenplay.

Anurag Basu's direction is first rate. He's made a couple of good films in my opinion - Gangster and Life..In a Metro. It was surprising to me that he would make a lighter film. Having said that, this is his best work yet.

Priyanka Chopra is excellent here. It's a tough role and she gives an excellent performance. There was much scope for her to over-act but she keeps her act subtle yet effective. Illieana D'Cruz is brilliant. Her role is strong and requires strong talent. She surely leaves her presence felt. Surab Shukla is in form after a long time. The rest of the supporting cast is adequate.

Barfi belongs to Ranbir Kapoor. Not a single word was uttered by his character yet you feel he said so much in the movie. Ranbir proves why he's the best actor of his generation and his contemporaries such as Shahid, John, Imran etc need to step their game up if they want to compete with this phenomenal talent. Terrific! Overall, it's a nice sweet film that one won't mind watching again. Highly Recommended!

Get Well Soon Mamu!

A goon promoting the principles of Mahatma Gandhi - Sounds unusual and ironic, doesn't it? No big challenge for Raju Hirani who transports the viewer into the colorful world of Munna and Circuit. LRMB leaves you with a huge smile refusing to fade away alongside a number of beautiful lessons in a very enlightening manner.

Munna and Circuit are small time goons who work for Lucky Singh. Munna is in love with Janvi and pretends to be a history professor and tells her he is a big follower of Gandhi to impress her. A turn of events leads Janvi to know Murli's truth. What happens next? Watch LRMB and find out.

LRMB is one of those rare films that never lose steam. There's a perfect mix of comedy and emotions. Best of all, it has tremendous repeat value.

Scenes to look out for? Too many but here's a few.

  • The very first scene - Munna answering questions on radio - Munna's first meeting with Janvi - Scenes between Munna and Gandhi and especially the ones featuring Circuit. - Munna spreading Gandhigiri all over. - Munna's revelation on why he sees Gandhi. - Climax


Those are just some of the moments not to miss. Actually, you really cannot afford to miss any.

Music is okay but sounds much better in the movie. Situational like the last Munnabhai.

The writing is nearly flawless and dialogue is applaud worthy. Just brilliant. They tear you up, either in laughter or emotions.

Vidiya Balan is fantastic. Suits the role to the T. Boman Irani is first rate. Gives a fine act. Diya Mirza, Khulbushan Karbhanda is as always. Jimmy Shergill is good. Ditto for Surab Shukla.

Special mention for Dilip Pravakar as Gandhi. He's terrific.

Of Course the 2 goons steal the show on screen as Munna and Circuit. The acting, the chemistry, the delivery - just astounding. Brilliant act by both. Sanjay Dutt is born for this role and he does full justice. He's lovable. Arshad Warsi is at his best when he plays Circuit. He brings the house down with some of the best lines.

The hero off screen is director Raj Kumar Hirani. Great execution and story telling by this gem of a director.

Overall, a brilliant feel good entertainer worth watching unlimited times.

A pleasant suspense drama

Talaash is special, the reason being obvious that it's a full fledge Aamir Khan starer after 3 Idiots. So of course it's evident that expectations are humongous and higher than any previous Aamir Khan film. So is the hype worth it? Does Aamir once again strike? For the most part, yes! A mysterious Mumbai night where an accident of a movie star occurs in an even more mysterious manner. This accident may be even deeper than expected when more clues reveal shocking details. Investigating the case is Surjan Shekawat who has more issues to be resolved than just this case. During his investigation he encounters various suspects such as a pimp named Shahsi and a prostitute who calls herself Rosy. How Surjan copes with his personal issues and the case is what Talaash is about.

A fascinating thing about Talaash is that it is still gripping despite not being a solid thriller. The film is more of a drama than a thriller. Also the screenplay runs in an engaging manner and written very smartly. In a way that every scene has you glued to the screen. The emotions are just right.

Flaws? The pacing is slow and very slow at certain places. Also, this type of film did not need that many songs. The film could have been trimmed about 10-15 minutes.

Also to those rumors that Talaash and Kahaani are similar - not even close.

Now to what everybody has been discussing regarding the movie: The climax. I was surprised to be honest. More so because of the element of the ending. It's just something I didn't expect an Aamir Khan film to have. However, just because I don't feel that it shouldn't happen that way or I didn't expect such an ending does not mean it was bad. It was a proper ending but one did want something a bit more rational.

The writing is crisp and nearly flawless. Some lines are brilliant. Screenplay is engaging. The film is technically superior.

Music is soothing to the ears. Even though I did not feel that some songs were needed but I'm glad they go with the flow of the story and do not come as speed bumps.

Reema Kagti's direction is brilliant. Miles ahead when compared to her first movie. A director to look forward to.

Rani Mukherjee is in form and gives a great act as the depressed wife. Good to see her back on the screen. Kareena gives a charismatic act and is first rate. Nawazudhin Siddaqui is another actor to look out for.

All said and done, Talaash is a full on Aamir Khan starer. From start to finish, Aamir gives a remarkable performance. Further proving he's the most versatile and best actor in his current generation.

Overall, Talaash is gripping film with a debatable ending. It's great tale full of suspense and emotions.

Strikes the right chords..

"Har ishq ka ek waqt hota hai" - A simple line rendered by Rishi Kapoor's character, Imran. By the end of the viewing, that is what this movie is mainly about. A love taking a couple of generations to mature. If we look at the big picture, JTHJ is merely another Yash Chopra Picture dealing with human relations.

If one goes back in time and looks at films such as Waqt, Daag, Deewar, Trishul, Silsila, Maashaal, Vijay, Lamhe, Darr, Veer Zaara etc. One notices that these Yash Chopra directed films delt with human emotions and relations above anything else. So does JTHJ live up to the humongous expectations? Does it live up to the name that is Yash Chopra? For the most part, Yes! Samar Annand is a Punjabi struggling to make a living in London. He bumps into Meera a few times here and there and then they start meeting consistently so that Samar can teach Meera to sing in Punjabi. (Reason is explained in the movie) They end up falling in love. However, circumstances and a promise to God from Meera leads them to break up. 10 years later, Samar is in the Indian Army enters Akira into his life. Why did Samar leave? Will they ever meet again? JTHJ doesn't leave any question unanswered.

What separates JTHJ from other Yash Chopra films is the whole modern feel of the movie. The characters using foul language, kissing scenes etc. However, the soul is surely the same and that's what separates JTHJ from other films of the year.

JTHJ may have the language of today, but it still has that Yash Chopra trademark of love, emotions and not to forget that Punjabi touch he puts in his films. That is surely there.

Other plus points in the movie are the twits/turns in the movie. Also, the chemistry between the lead pair is electrifying. The second half is actually pretty interesting for the most part. While the first half is excellent.

A scene I loved was in the second half when SRK-Katrina meet in the hospital. Add to that, there's a sequence in the second half when Samar shows Akira his past life 10 years ago. As a viewer, you see the scene just like Akira does. You realize how alive Samar is the same as Akira.

Flaws? The film could have been trimmed down a bit. The scenes before the climax start to drag a bit.

A special mention to the cinematography of Anil Mehta. The film is a visual treat. Whether it's London or Ladhak - Just beautiful.

Aditiya Chopra's story is good but it's the dialogue that does the trick here. Knowing Aditiya Chopra's past work, one expects some great lines and he delivers.

A.R. Rahman and Gulzar come up with a beautiful soundtrack. Each song is special. Challa being my favorite and Saans being the most soulful. Again, each song is picturised perfectly.

Katrina Kaif gives an elegant act. She looks gorgeous but also performs well. Given that her acting talent is limited, Chopra has extracted something out of her.

Anushka Sharma is a scene stealer. This is her best performance yet. Her energy, charisma, lines etc Just brilliant. She's sure to take great acclaim after this movie.

Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Singh, Anupam Kher all make nice cameos and do justice to their roles. The guy that plays SRK's roommate from Lahore is a delight.

All said and done, JTHJ is held on the shoulders of 2 giants. Actor Shah Rukh Khan and director Yash Chopra. SRK puts his best foot forward and gives another powerful performance. He has 2 distinct characters and he excels in both. If SRK carries the film in front of the camera, it's the man behind the camera that the film really belongs to. The late Yash Chopra's direction is nothing short of spectacular. He said he would make films till he died and he did just that.

Overall, JTHJ strikes the right chords. The story may not be the most interesting but it's the moments that make the movie. So do watch this Yash Chopra Romance!

Delightful yet though provoking

Preachy? Yes. Loud? Yes. Has blemishes? Yes. Despite some minor hiccups, OMG makes some strong points and leaves a huge impact on the viewer and some of their viewpoints.

Plus, the movie talks about possibly the most universal topic out there - God and his existence. However, OMG is not all about God and his existence. In fact, an atheist suing God is merely a backdrop. OMG talks about much more controversial things here. OMG shamelessly discusses the commercialization of religion, especially in India. It may not have done it with full intelligence, however, it's a brave film with a mark.

Kanjibhai Mehta is an atheist who runs a shop that sells Hindu idols and "murti's". He is an open atheist and believes religion is nothing more than a business. A natural disaster causes only his shop to be destroyed. Kanji is shocked when the insurance company tells him that they cannot recover the losses because the disaster was an "act of God". This leads Kanji to sue this "God" character. Along his journey, Kanji is supported by a mysterious man named Krishna.

There are many hard hitting scenes in the movie. The scene with Paresh selling the murti's, the scenes during the yatra. Not to forget Akhay's scenes with Paresh. The court scenes are outrageous.

There are some problems here and there. The main one being that the film at times gets preachy. Also, Akki's intro is a bit stretched. Also, the last 10 minutes of the movie are also a bit stretched.

OMG does shed some light into the commercialization of religion in the country of India. The film exploits the truth here for sure.

The music is meaningful and fairly enjoyable. Mere Nishan is my pick of the lot.

The dialogue is brilliant. Writing is excellent for the most part. Umesh Shukla's direction is extraordinary. Props to him for making such a brave film that too without hurting any sentiments.

Performances are also complimentary. Akshay Kumar is there in a special appearance and impresses. Especially in the last few minutes. Mithun is good but acts a little weird at times. Govind Namdeo is good. Om Puri is good. Rest of the cast is good.

OMG surely stands on the shoulders of Paresh Rawal. To say he's a fine actor would not live up to the level of talent this man truly has. Rawal sinks his teeth into the role and is nothing short of perfect. Astounding! Overall, it's a film that will make you laugh, make you think and eventually spark a debate. Highly Recommended!

Deserves all the praise!

There are not that many movies that really have the viewer smiling all through till the end. This smile on my face was more so due to the situations the main character overcomes throughout the film. I had an instant connection with this movie because my mother came to the U.S. with weak English and so did many of my friends' mothers.

If you look at English Vinglish on a bigger scale, it's nothing more than an underdog story. This time, however, the protagonist doesn't try to win a fight with a certain character with a language and even deeply, she has to win against herself.

To state that English Vinglish is pleasing, is a giant understatement. English Vinglish is more than pleasing, it's a journey to overcome your weakness; even if it's just by learning a different language.

Shashi is a housewife who's world revolves around her husband and children. She runs a small business working at home. Unlike the rest of her family, she is not even close to fluent in the English language. When she has to fly to America to attend her niece's wedding, this "weakness" of hers is further exploited...One fine day, Shahsi has enough and joins classes to learn English in 4 weeks. Of course we know what happens in the end, but what happens between the beginning and the end is a treat all the way.

Yes, the film is formulaic and at times, predictable. That is the only criticism I really see in other reviews. What is wrong with narrating a story in a predictable way? What matters is if the story is told with conviction and if it provides entertainment - Which it surely does.

There are many scenes in the movie that do the trick. The scene at the café is striking. All of the scenes in the class are sheer entertainment. Not to forget the scenes Shashi and her french admirer. Unique, yet poetic! Another plus is character development. There is no character that is underdeveloped or even overdeveloped. The writing is nearly flawless.

The music is different. The good kind of different.

Gauri Shinde's direction is adequate. She is a director to look out for.

The performances are all pretty natural. Adil Hussain is first rate. Mehdi Nabou is convincing and charismatic. The actor who plays the south Indian is terrific. Ditto for the Pakistani cab driver - brilliant. The whole cast is perfect. A sweet cameo is done by Amitabh Bachchan and he's, well, charming as always.

Nothing, however, is more perfect than the casting of Sridevi. It's impossible to imagine another actress do this role with such ease, such conviction. The vulnerability and then turning into strength - Just marvelous. Applaudworthy! Overall, English Vinglish has a lot of heart. It will keep you smiling and some may even shed a tear or two.

Kabul Express (2006)

A journey worth taking

The thing that intrigued me while viewing this was that I'm seeing a movie showcasing a journey made by 5 people from different cultures all in one car. An American, An Afgan, A Pakistani and 2 Indians; now how often is that seen in Hindi films? I'm not trying to say the film sends a message of humanity but I do feel that it provides entertainment in innovative ways.

I saw that in Kabir Khan's New York as well. Taht's why his Ek Tha Tiger disappointed me a whole lot. Back to Kabul Express, if you haven't seen this treat to the eyes, go for it. I'll elaborate after the summary.

It is November 2001, post the deadly 9/11 attacks. Jai and Sohail are journalists from India and have traveled to Kabul to interview the few remaining Taliban activists in Afganistan. In midst of reaching these terrorists - they meet a Pakistani army officer trying to escape to his home, an American reporter and an Afgan driver. What happens next is Kabul Express.

Thoroughly crisp, well edited and engaging is how I define Kabul Express. I do want to add that the film educates the viewer about the beautiful country of Afganistan.

There are times when the film keeps the viewer in intensity and then there also enjoyable moments between Arshad and the Pakistani actor. Not to forget the Coke-Pepsi scene.

One moment that made me smile was a subtle scene that said a thousand things. The scene when the actors are listening to a famous 1960's Hindi song by Rafi saab is worth mentioning. It makes you think how music can bring so many together. Lovely scene.

The background score is great. No useless songs, thank God for that.

The writing is crisp and dialogue is fresh. Screenplay is engaging.

Every performance is top-notch. John Abraham is first rate. Arshad Warsi is a scene stealer. Salman Shahid is brilliant. The Afgan actor is also terrific. The American actress is competent.

Overall, an entertainer that educates and sends a small, nice message.

The Deols in form

When I watched Apne, I was slightly disappointed. Not because it was a bad film, as a film - Apne was pretty decent. However, it shocked me to see the Deols together for the first-time and they're in an emotional drama. Of Course, that's not the fault of Apne but still I was thriving for that one film full of masala and action that the Deols provided millions in the past few years. With Yamla Pagla Deewana, we finally are treated to a wacky action comedy full of gags and spoofs on the Deol family themselves.

Paramvir is an NRI living with his Canadian wife, kids and mother. Paramvir's father had left them with Paramvir's younger brother many years ago. Through a coincidence, Paramvir comes to know that his father and brother are in Banaras and they're big cons. Paramvir goes to India to bring back his remaining family. Once Paramvir reaches there, things go haywire as other issues arise for Paramvir other than just getting his father and brother back. What happens next, is Yamla Pagla Deewana.

YPD does not promise logic. However, it stills provides a bit more than the usual mindless entertainer. The storyline also does not bring anything new. However, it's the moments, the chemistry, the dialogue and gags that blow one away.

The first half is actually plain ordinary. There are a few moments that may enlighten you but it's the second half where everything is properly packed. In fact, the post intervel portions make Yamla Pagla Deewana fun.

There are some minor blemishes here and there. Firstly, why exactly does Dharmendra leave the family is never properly explained. Also, the music is a sour point. The revised yesteryear song which is also the title track stays with you. Also, Tinku Jiya and that's about it.

The screenplay is okay in the first half but the the writers need to be aplauded on the jump they make in the second half. It's a joyride when our Deols get to Punjab. Dialogue is fresh.

Samir Karnik's direction is good. As mentioned, the second half is where he gets it right. From the sequence when Sunny and Bobby meet Anupem Kher for the first time till the climax.Terrific.

Dharmendra looks in great shape and gives an energetic performance. Bobby Deol is good in the first hour but it's really the second hour when he shines. Kulraj Randhawa is gorgeous.

From the characters, it's Anupem Kher who stands out as the crazy brother. He's brilliant. Not to forget two other actos who shine well - Mukul Dev as Billa and Amit Mistry as Binda. Sucheta Khanna as Poli is also first rate. Puneet Issar is wasted. Nafisa Ali is okay.

All said and done, the film rides on the strong shoulders of Sunny Deol. Sunny is in form and in the correct form after a long long time. It's great to see the talented macho man do everything from action to comedy. Just excellent! Overall, it's a treat to watch the 3 Deols together and that too in the right kind of movie. If you are free and need to be entertained, Yamla Pagla Deewana is for you.

A Tasteless Romance

After viewing Teri Meri Kahani I've come to 2 conclusions - Kunal Kohli is one overrated director and his ONLY film worth praising, Hum Tum, was a giant fluke.

His Mujhse Dosti Karogi was a cheesy romance that can even make Karan Johar and Suraj Bharjatiya cringe. His Fanaa was a novel idea gone haywire in the second half. His Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic was well, a joke. After 4 years, Kohli brings us another romance and he once again, doesn't fail to disappoint.

The whole concept of T.M.K. is interesting and nobody can deny that. In fact, had the writing been in place - it would have been genius. However, T.M.K. is sadly nothing more than 3 predictable love stories in one 2 and a half hour flick.

In 1960, a growing India with a growing film industry has a musician named Govind who has a dream to make it big in Bombay. There he meets film-star Ruksaar and then starts their .

In 2012, Krissh has just had a break up with his girlfriend on his birthday. That same night, he meets Radha, a up to date girl. Then starts their .

Now back to 1910, British ruled India. Javed is a charming womanizer who meets a girl who just doesn't get wooed by his antics. A sardarni by the name of Aradhna. Javed falls in love and there starts their .

Now all 3 stories start out with a bang but fiddle down very easily. Also, the misunderstandings in the movie are so dumb. Especially for the story in 1960 and 2012. To me, the best story is in 1910 but even that story isn't extraordinary.

The climax is rushed and there is no doubt. It's as if the writers don't know where to go now and just give up on the script.

The writing is sore. Kunal Kohli's shayari is very good, however. That is about it!! Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra save the film from being complete trash. Shahid is excellent in all avtaars. Of Course it's most fun to watch him as Javed. Priyanka looks amazing and acts well too. It isn't the best act from the 2, but good indeed.

Now to director Kunal Kohli. I don't hate or love the guy. I do feel that one major thing that has hurt most of his films (except Hum Tum) is the predictability level. His films don't have the X Factor. Even here, where there is a great idea in place - the boring writing messes things up. His direction is good but he fails in choosing the right screenplay.

Overall, a very bland and tasteless romance with very few moments that amaze the viewer. Dasappointing.

A Rizwan Khan show all the way!

Karan Johar just keeps getting bolder as a director. The ambitious filmmaker who once debuted with a candy-floss romance like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai has ventured into issue-based films. It all started with his take on extra-martial relationships in his last film Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna. This time, and probably for the first time, Karan's film isn't about romance. (Not the basic premise, however) MNIK is about a simple autistic man out to "Repair" the world.

The big question is, does Karan recreate the magic of his last films? For the most part, yes.

Rizwan Khan is an autistic man from India who comes to America to live with his brother after his mother's demise. Rizwan, who sees the world in either black or white, falls in love with a Hindu single-mother named Mandira. Against his brother's wishes, Rizwan marries Mandira and they are ready to start their happy life. However, the day that changed the world had come. 9/11 attacks occur which leads to the racial attack on Mandira's son. An outraged Mandira blames Rizwan's last name for the murder of her son and tells him in anger to go tell the world that he's not terrorist, tell the president he's not a terrorist. From then on starts Rizwan's journey of love, peace and realization.

MNIK is Karan Johar's strongest script, there is no doubt about it. The plot is linear and depends on defining moments in the script. The direction is compelling and the screenplay is engaging for the most part. The biggest plus of MNIK is Rizwan Khan, the character. One of the best written characters in Indian Cinema. Add to that, the production values, performances, music - the whole packaging is excellent.

Having said that, I do feel that MNIK is Karan's weakest film. (Yes, weaker than KANK) However, that isn't a bad thing since Johar has such a spectacular track record. Why I say this is because I feel the film drags in the second half more than it should. Also, the whole "Hum honge Kamyaab" and "Momma Jenny" scenes are cheesy at times. There is a scene that really angered me - it's a scene of an American teacher telling young children that all Muslims are terrorists. That is a horrible scene. I don't think that happened in most US schools during 9/11. I've grown up in the U.S. and it is much more tolerant than shown.

A significant highpoint is of course the chemistry of arguably the best on-screen couple of Indian Cinema. SRK and Kajol light up the screen as always.

There are some hair-raising moments in the film. Starting with SRK's first meeting with Kajol. One can't help but put a smile on. SRK in the mosque lashing out against a Muslim activist. The best scene, in my opinion, is when Rizwan goes to a church to have dinner with the president and is rejected. His response is applaud-worthy.

The writing is superb in the first half. As mentioned, second half could have been better. Dialogue is outstanding.

Shankar-Esaan-Loy's music is soothing and magical. Every song is terrific. Picturised well too.

Karan Johar's direction is in form, like always. It's a tough film to make and he's definitely outdone himself when it comes to executing scenes. It's a great achievement.

Kajol is looking like a million bucks. Her acting is no surprise, she never disappoints. Jimmy Shergill makes a strong presence.

MNIK belongs to Shah Rukh Khan more than anybody. Rizwan's innocence, honesty and sincerity is all thanks to SRK. Every expression, line, just mind blowing. SRK lives the role and gives a performance to remember. From the scene where he tells the church about his son to his expression when Kajol asks him to marry her. Every expression, big or small is flawless.

Overall, a film that has it's flaws here and there. Looking at the big picture, it's a film that's not afraid to be loud and clear about what it wants to say. It's surely worth a watch for brilliant moments, a great narrative and it's worth a second watch just for Rizwan Khan.

Veer-Zaara (2004)

Poetic Brilliance

Yash Chopra has been one filmmaker who has told stories straight from his heart. He hasn't compromised for appreciation. Add to that, he's been a storyteller who has kept with the times and sometimes, he's gone ahead of times. Big and younger directors such as Subash Ghai, Sanjay Bhansali, Rajiv Rai and Ashutoush have not lived up to their names, and Yash Chopra has given non-stop hits since 1994. Whether it was having the leading man play a gangster in Deewar, or his bold take on extra-martial affairs in Silsila, or his most bold film Lamhe, about a love with a huge age difference and not to forget, Darr, where he gave more importance to the villain instead of the good guy - Chopra has succeeded in keeping up with the audience.

Now why am I talking about Yash Chopra so much? Well, it's because when one hears the story of Veer Zaara and then when one watches it - they see a deeper tale than they read. Veer Zaara being a Indo-Pak love story sounds like a Henna or Gadar, yet it's not. It's Chopra's genius to develop a fresher theme having such a done-to-death plot.

Veer Pratap Singh has been in a prison in Lahore for 22 years, his case is being re-opened, however. His lawyer is a young girl by the name of Samiya Siddique. To win Veer's case, she needs to know why Veer is in this prison. What is Veer's story? Who is Zaara? Why is Veer in jail? Will he ever be released? A handful of questions are answered in those 3 hours.

Veer Zaara talks about 3 things.

  • A man's pursuit for love going all boundaries and borders. - A man's identity - The relationship and similarities of 2 different nations that border each-other.


Veer Zaara works and how! Veer Zaara is pure Indian soul. There's no peppy dance number, no crazy graphics, no special effects. I wrote above how Yash Chopra never compromises and Veer Zaara is a pure example. In the year where films like Dhoom and Murder became huge hits, Veer Zaara's success was the biggest.

Even Veer Zaara's music sparks uniqueness. The music isn't by Jatin-Lalit, Shankar Mahadevan, or Pritam. The tunes are picked out from a collection made by the late Madhan Mohan. The music is soulful and magic to the ears. Every song is so wonderful with touch9ng lyrics by Javed Akhtar.

The songs are picturised with sheer beauty. Especially Aisa Des Hai Mera. It was a delight to see Shah Rukh and Gurdas Mann shake a leg together in the song.

The writing is crisp! It's nearly flawless. The film is a tad bit too long but the screenplay doesn't bore you. The dialogues are top-notch, they are applaud-worthy. Kudos to Aditiya Chopra.

Veer Zaara is carried on the shoulders of Shah Rukh Khan. Playing a young man in his late 20's and then a man in his late 40's - SRK gives a bravo performances. His speech in the end is worth a standing ovation just for the expression and passion put in by Khan.

After SRK, it's Rani Mukherjee who is a scene stealer. Rani looks the role, and masters it in her own brilliant way. Remarkable. Preity Zinta is good and does her part with ease.

Of the supporting characters, it's Divya Dutta who takes the cake. She gives her best act. Kirron Kher is first-rate. Anupam Kher is, as usual, excellent. Boman Irani is okay.

The small cameo made by Amitabh Bhachchan and Hema Malani puts a grand smile on your face. A master-stroke indeed.

Veer Zaara belongs to Yash Chopra more than anyone else. The master storyteller adds another feather to his well-decorated hat. (Director's hat) He's handled the scenes of drama, emotions, romance just so poetically. No wonder he's the best filmmaker India will ever see.

Overall, a high intensity filled romance that talks about more than just love's boundaries but also depicts that these boundaries of love are more similar than different.

The Perfect Indian Romance

Time is a tricky thing. A film of the 70's that's over the top would bomb in today's day and time. A film of today's time had no chance a few decades back. There are rare films that I feel remain fresh for eternity. Dilwale Dhulhaniya Le Jaayenge (Known as DDLJ) is one of those films that one can watch even today and not cringe in embarrassment.

Chaudry Baldev Singh is a Punjabi living in London. He's a very proud, egoistic and patriotic Conservative. He has a daughter Simran, a slightly liberal girl held back by tradition. Simran requests to go on a trip around Europe with her friends before she goes back to India to get married to the guy of her father's choice. Her father agrees and then starts Simran's love story with another Punjabi boy from London, who is the total opposite of what Baldev Singh would want. Raj, a spoiled, good hearted party boy also falls for Simran. However, Simran is already engaged and is forced to India. Then starts Raj's journey to go and get his love.

From the very first scene, which shows a hard-working NRI Baldev Singh explaining how he and the birds are no different as they fly wherever they can eat, to the famous train climax. DDLJ is a treat to the eyes, ears, and most of all - the heart! If one actually analyzes, DDLJ is about a lot of issues. To start, the film can be seen through the eyes of a traditional father who wants to go back to the nest he grew up in. About a man who wants to raise his children the way he was in a totally Allen place. The initial scene and the scenes in the second half when SRK and the late and great Amrish Puri are feeding the birds are the deepest scenes in the film.

DDLJ is also the story of a women's sacrifice. A girl's sacrifice. One of the most brilliant scenes in the film has Farida Jalal explaining the sacrifice of a woman to Kajol. Just astounding.

All said and done, DDLJ is about true love and going all the way to attain it.

Now the story seems a bit serious on paper. However, that is not the case at all. There is humor all through the movie. SRK meeting Kajol for the first time is hilarious. My favorite comic scene is when Anupam Kher shows pride in his son failing - Classic.

Where most films have a dip in the pace in the second half, DDLJ just gets better. Raj's entry to Simran's family is clever and leaves a smile on your face. Of Course Anupam Kher's surprise in the second half causes even more laughs.

The film has been out for nearly 20 years and has had its share of criticism. Dumb criticism, mostly. I've heard and read ignorant people say that it's the same old love story and it's boring, it's over the top blah blah blah. I don't see that anywhere. In fact, most Indian love stories have been inspired by this classic. Boring? What movie were you watching? Over the top? It was quite subtle for its time.

Jatin Lalit have given their most memorable soundtrack with DDLJ. All the songs are worth listening to multiple times. The evergreen Tujhe Dekha Toh Yeah Jaana of course tops the list. Every song is a classic. The most underrated song in the album was Ghar Aaja Pardesi which also had the best lyrics.

Choreography, camera, locales, sets, art, - Just a treat.

Aditiya Chopra's story is flawless. It is linear, yet so interesting. The screenplay is gripping all through. And of course, who can forget the famous dialogue of the movie? Lines such as "Chote chote deson mein aisi badi badi baatein," "Jaa simran, jaa" and other various one-liners are still remembered by one and all.

Aditiya Chopra's direction is nothing short of spectacular. Not to forget that this was his first directorial venture. His films after this as director were not even half as good as this one, however. Though, even Adi will agree with me that DDLJ is something that even he cannot make again.

Shah Rukh Khan emerged the superstar he is with DDLJ. Playing darker roles and being well known as the villain in Darr and Baazigar, SRK tried his hand on an out and out romantic comedy which changed his world. There is nobody more charismatic, energetic, and spontaneous enough to essay this role better than SRK. It's definitely amongst his best acts and also one of the best acts by any lead hero in cinema. The comedy, action, romance, emotions - Just perfect! Kajol is one actress that has even given her leading men competition. She is nothing short of exceptional here. The great mix of innocence and spunk is only something Kajol can do. Superb! Amrish Puri is brilliant. In the starting reels, one really doesn't agree with his character. However, by the end of the movie he wins your heart. Known for being the bad guy, Amrish Puri is extraordinary as a supporting character here.

Another performance worth mentioning is of Farida Jalal. She suits the role to the T. Her scene in the latter half with Kajol when she explains a woman's sacrifice is applaudworthy. Anupam kher is hilarious. He helps complete DDLJ. Bringing him back in the second half was a master-stroke. Satish Shah is first rate. Parmeeth Sethi and Mandira Bedi are notable.

Overall, what more can be said? Well, a lot more. However, I'll end it here and demand that you go watch this classic even if you're not a fan of romantic comedies. You will become one. Don't worry, you'll still love this film despite it being 18 years old, actually, you'll like it more than most Indian films you see today.

Om Shanti Om (2007)

Entertainment at its best

Bring out the popcorn, grab a cola and get ready for 2 and a half hours of laughs, songs, color, emotions, and spoofs. If you're a fan of the Indian film industry and have kept up with the news, Om Shanti Om is for you. If you love entertainment to the max, OSO is definitely for you! Farah Khan's Om Shanti Om spares nobody, not even its makers when it comes to poking fun. OSO is a film about films, it's a film in a film and above all, it's made to celebrate the biggest film producing industry - The Indian Film Industry.

Om Prakash is a junior artist who thrives to become a lead hero one day. He is a horrible actor and has a mother who hams more than him. Om has another dream: To win over a star, Shanti-Priya. One circumstance leads to another which leads to Om being a witness to the death of Shanti by producer Mukesh Mehra. Om also gets killed in the incident. That same night, Om is reborn as Om Kapoor. Will Om realize his past-life? Will he avenge Shanti's death? As the tagline suggests: For some dreams, one life-time is not enough.

OSO has a done-to-death story. But that's not the point. The film is a parody of films and the ones working in it. Notice the spoofs on the yesteryear stars such as Manoj Kumar. A controversial scene but one can't deny it's hilarious. Not to forget spoofs on Govinda, Keshtu Mukherjee, and Suraj Bharjateeyaa. Of course the most memorable comic scene has to be SRK pretending to be a south Indian actor. "Mind It" OSO's first half is gripping and keeps the viewer alert. The drama folds the right way. The second half loses steam at times. It's not bad, but unlike Farah's first film where the second half competed well with the first, it stars to slow down a bit. It picks back up, fortunately.

The spoofs aren't less hilarious in the second half. The film pokes fun of a lot of celebs and Indian film industry issues. To start, SRK being late is a spoof on himself being late to sets in real life. Not to forget the whole dard-e-disco song is a spoof on item numbers. The high point of the second half has to be the award ceremony. The spoof on Abhishek Bachchan is subtle yet funny. SRK doing the same roles and being nominated is remarkably funny. Not to forget Akshay KUmar's outburst at the awards is aplaudworthy and rib-tickling. Subash Ghai-Rishi Kapoor spoof is funny too.

Flaws? As mentioned, the second half falters in some parts. Also, SRK remembering his past so quickly seems rushed and unconvincing.

The climax, however, is a pleasant surprise.

Special Mention - The Deewangee song is a treat to the eyes. 31 stars in one song is no joke and they all look nothing short of spectacular. Special mention to the ones that caught my eye with their appearance. Dharmendra, Jatendra, Kajol, Salman, Saif, Sanju, Rekha etc all do well alongside Shah Rukh Khan.

Farah Khan and her team of writers have put some genius into parts of the movie. The writing is witty, smart, and quite innovative. Dilague is first rate.

Vishal-Shekar's music is amazing. With a variety of songs in one film, they do a wonderful job.

Farah's direction is first rate. She handles all the moments with ease. It's not a better film than Main Hoon Na, but still a good job.

In 2007, 3 months before OSO released; SRK unleashed the actor in him and kept the star away in a movie called Chak De India. In OSO, it's the opposite. OSO is a film where SRK can chill and not worry about the criticism. His performance is explosive and energetic. In this, it's SRK the superstar unleashed. And kudos to him for also poking fun at himself despite being the producer of this one.

Deepika makes a grand debut and I'm sure she couldn't have asked for anything else. She looks gorgeous and makes a good debut. Arjun Rampal is spectacular as the villain here. Brilliant.

The supporting cast does well too which includes the lovable Shreyas Talpade, the scene-stealing Kirron Kher and Javed Sheikh.

Overall, A grand film which has one objective - Entertainment!

Hate Story (2012)

A done to death, flawed Hate Story

When we see the first trailer of Hate Story, we think of an exciting, bold, electrifying story. Of Course, the erotica depicted in the trailer is anything but subtle. So when I saw this movie, I actually expected a decent movie. (I really did not have a reason to because Vivek Agnihotri isn't even a decent story-teller) Still, the trailer made me have slight hope. However, that hope was gone within the first 20 minutes. More on that in a bit, first the synopsis.

Kaavya is a young, modern journalist out to find the truth and the truth only. She pulls a sting operation on a corrupt businessman Sidhart Dhanrajgir. "Impressed" with her work, Dhanrajgir offers her a job. Kaavya instantly falls for Sidhart and sleeps with him. A delighted Kaavya is shattered when Sidhart fires her and kicks her out. Kaavya, pregnant with Sidhart's child has a forced abortion done by Sidhart's goons and is left ruined. Kaavya's only objective now is to get revenge and destroy Sidhart.

The story seems done to death but even an old story told in a new way can do wonders. (Agneepath being a recent example of such brilliance) Where Hate Story lost me was in the first few reels. Why does Kaavya work for Siddhart if the post has nothing to do with her last job? Money? If so, then why is she shown as this moral and ethical journalist passionate about her job? Why is she throwing all that away for extra cash? Second, how does she fall for Siddhart so fast? I mean, come on! She goes on a holiday with him and ends up sleeping with him right then? Isn't this the same moral journalist? Plus, why is she even interacting with Siddarth after proving that he's a corrupt money-hungry man? All those questions were thrown at me just in the initial reels. Not a good sign. The writing is poor, and takes the audience for granted. We're not idiots.

More flaws? Of Course. Why is there so much forced sex? Also, I don't know why Kaavya went to learn "Prostitution" of she really wasn't going to be one. Plus, she slept with the corrupt businessman a week into getting the job - She's got the traits of prostitute in her.

The climax is surprising but seems like something we've seen numerous times.

The film really doesn't score much on anything besides two things. The slick style of filmmaking and the decent performances.

Vikram Bhatt's story is old fashioned and completely flawed. Too many loopholes. Some dialogue is decent, however.

The music doesn't offer much.

Vivek Agnihotri's direction is okay. Actually one of the better things in this flick. It's stylish.

Paoli Dam makes a confident debut. She's actually really good here. She looks good, of course, but there's also a dominant actress in her. Only if her character and script was better. Despite that, she carries this bad film on her shoulders. Gulshan Deviaha is also impressive. He looks awkward in the starting but pulls on his own.

Resst of the cast is good too.

Overall - A flawed film not worth watching even once.

A Musst Watch Comedy

It's a lazy afternoon and you have nothing to do. There's always a movie you can pick up and watch even though you have seen it over 10 times. Golmaal is one of them. Is there a plot? No. Is there a life-lesson? Hell no! What Golmaal actually offers is a story of 4 good for nothing pranksters who end up conning their way into the mansion of a blind couple. What crazy events occur next? That's Golmaal.

Gopal, Madhav, Lakshman and Lucky are four useless youngsters who do nothing but eat, drink and chill. Due to their unpaid loan to Vasulli bhai, they are on the run. They end up at the mansion of a blind couple who think their grandson has shown up from America. Then starts, Golmaal.

The story really does not offer much. However, I feel that just maybe the strength of the movie. It is a film that has its comical moments do the talking more than anything else.

There are some classic comedy scenes in the movie. The opening scene defines what the rest of the movie will be. Not to forget other scenes such as when the boys enter the house and have their first meeting with Paresh Rawal.

Not to forget when the principle enters Sharman's room. Arshad and Sharman trying to get at Ajay is hilarious.

The funniest scenes have to be the valentines day scene when the boys all gift something to Rimi and the Black parody. Just hilarious! Rohit Shetty doesn't have to depend on his directing much. It's the writing that's the strongest point. By writing, I mean the dialogue. The lines are rib tickling.

The music is a pleasant surprise. Reh ja reh ja is my favorite. The title song is amusing. Kyun aage aage is a treat to watch and a master stroke.

Rohit Shetty's direction is first rate. He handles all the scenes with ease.

Golmaal is full of talented actors. All the actors perform to an equal level of competency. Ajay Devgan is a revelation in this one. His comedy is subtle yet extremely funny. Arshad Warsi is a scene stealer, as always. Sharman joshi gives a very good act. Tusharr Kapoor is first rate and he doesn't even speak a word in the film. Rimi Sen does well Paresh Rawal is as always, perfect. Manoj Joshi is brilliant. Ditto for Sanjay Mishra and Mukesh Tiwari.

Overall - A film you can watch anytime, anywhere. Strongly recommended!

Vicky Donor (2012)

A highly appreciated donation...

Cunning, smart, fast-paced. Those are just some words to describe Vicky Arora and also I'd use the same words to describe this movie. If you like comedies with an actual script and not just over-done slapstick humor (Like the horrible Housefull 2), Vicky Donor is for you. Don't blink an eye because the language is so fast that you may actually miss a clever line.

Vicky Arora is an unemployed Punjabi Delhi boy who is tired of seeking a job and also tired of his nagging mother. On the other hand, Dr. Chadda, a man who sees everyone as a sperm, owns a clinic where he runs a "business" of sperm donation. However, he just cannot find the right sperm donor with the required qualities. One day he finds Vicky and sees potential in him. After refusing a few times, Vicky finally accepts Chadda's offer once he sees the money coming in. All goes smoothly until Vicky falls in love and gets married. One situation leads to another and Vicky's secret that he's a sperm donor gets out. What happens next, is what Vicky Donor is about.

Vicky Donor does not try to be a classic or even a film with a message. It tells a simple story in an extraordinary way. That is what works for the movie. Plus, the characters are all so straight out of life. They're normal people living an ordinary life in Delhi.

There a a number of sequences that one ends up loving. The intro of Annu Kapoor in the opening scene is excellent. The whole first half is actually super-entertaining. The scenes when Annu Kapoor tries to convince Vicky to donate keeps you glued. Not to forget the scenes between Vicky's mother and grand-mother - just brilliant.

Special mention - Delhi is also a character in the movie. Looks beautiful, I may be biased here since I'm from there.

However, my favorite sequences are in the middle when Vicky and Ashima try to convince the culturally diverse parents to let them get married. The two cultures stereotyping each other is hilarious and put a smile on your face.

The film has its share of flaws. The fast pace slows down significantly in the latter portions. Also, since the film is set in Delhi, there is a lot of Punjabi spoken in the movie. More than usual. So if you don't know the language, some jokes and words will be hard to get. However, those are very minor blemishes.

The writing is intelligent. Dialogue is witty, funny and suits. The screenplay is fresh! Music is a pleasant surprise. Rum Whiskey catches you. Pani da rang is soothing. Peppy and fresh! Shoojit Sarcar is a director to look out for. He's given a brilliant screenplay and does full justice to it.

I also want to thank John Abraham for producing this movie and not being the lead hero. He could have easily starred in this one and probably messed it up just as easy.

Ayushmann Khurana is a natural talent. He looks the role, suits the role and does a perfect job. Hard to believe it's his first feature film. Yami Gautam has that X factor in her. It shows. She's gorgeous as well.

Dolly Ahluwalia and Kamlesh Gill have great chemistry as Vicky's mother and grandmother. They're just so natural. Rest of the cast supports well.

Vicky Donor would not be the same without Dr. Baldev Chadda, played so brilliantly by Annu Kapoor. Annu Kapoor is out of this world here. It's his best performance, in my opinion. When he's not on screen, one actually misses the crazy Punjabi Dr. Chadda. Outstanding! Overall - A feel-good film with a sweet message. Recommended!

A Modern Day Classic!

First he taught us that laughter is the best medicine. With his second venture, he taught us the ways of piece and love through Ghandism. Now, with 3 Idiots, Rajkumar Hirani tells us to chase excellence and success will follow.

I'm a viewer who believes the best way to send a message is through an entertaining way rather than a preachy way. A message through entertainment hits you harder than a boring and preachy one. Films, of course, are not meant to send messages, but it's always nice to see one that does. I honestly believe nobody can do it better than Raju Hirani - Currently the best director of Hindi Cinema.

Like his previous attempts, Raju Hirani makes us laugh, cry and think all in one viewing. 3 Idiots not only introduces you to a new world, but also provides a fresh way of filmmaking and narration. Not to forget that it tackles an issue that not many have touched upon - The Education System.

Years after graduating from college, Farhan and Raju receive a message from an old classmate, Chatur. Chatur claims that he has found their old buddy Rancho. Rancho, a free mind, an intelligent student, a good guy. Why is Rancho so important? What exactly did Rancho do? Why did he leave? Will Farhan and Raju find him? All that is depicted in the next nearly 3 hours of the movie.

To start, 3 Idiots deals with a few things here and there. Whether it is the poor school system that discriminates and pressures you involving your grades. Whether it's you father forcing you to become an engineer and not allowing you to pursue your dreams. Or even a bright student who fears he may not be able to live up to the high expectations. Finally, 3 Ididots says one simple thing - Chase your dreams, demolish your fears and try your best - Success is a given.

There are a number of significant moments I totally love in the movie. Aamir's introduction itself is a great start. I'll go on and say another lovely scene is when Farhan and Raju come last and find out where Rancho placed. Of Course, who can forget Chatur's hilarious "Balatkaar speech" Just Genius writing. There are more moments to cherish here. The whole climax is lovely. Mona Singh's baby delivery is gripping. Finally, Rancho's real identify being shown keeps you glued and enlightened all at once.

My favorite part of the film is when Farhan and Raju decide their fates. Farhan confronting his father about his real dreams and Raju's interview - Just amazing moments.

Flaws? I really don't see any. I do want to note that the film is almost 3 hours yet you do not feel like it has been that long.

Rajkumar Hirani and his co writer really developed a nearly flawless script here. The lines are just amazing. They are fresh and also have that feel-goodness to them. The screenplay is excellent.

The music of the movie grows on you. All Izz Well lifts your spirit. Give Me Some Sunshine is amazing. Behti Hawa is also an underrated song. Songs are pictured well.

R. Madhavan gives his best performance in my opinion. His voice over is also a master stroke. He's got a strange innocence to him him this film. It works. Sharman Joshi is no less. He's just first rate. Especially in the scene when he goes to give his interview.

Kareena Kapoor is actually acting well here. A great act. Boman Irani is first rate as always. He's just brilliant. His character is sort of similar to his earlier character in Raju Hirani's first film, Munnabhai MBBS. However, there's a huge distinction in Boman's act. Shows the man's versatility.

Aamir Khan holds 3 Idiots together all through. I feel he should have gotten the best actor award that year instead of Amitabh Bachchan in Paa (That was a great act too) He looks the role, he's just perfect in every frame. You don't really expect anything less than that from Mr. Khan.

All said and done, even Aamir would agree with me that the real hero of this film is Raj Kumar Hirani, the director. He's filled the movie with so many wonderful moments, extracted some memorable performances and has given one of the most entertaining films to Indian Cinema.

What else can I say? Just a big thanks to director Raj Kumar Hirani, producer Vinod Chopra and actor Aamir Khan for giving us this modern day classic.

Ra.One (2011)

A mammoth disappointment

When it comes to ambition, determination and hard work - there isn't really anyone in India that can compete with SRK. Being Indian cinema's biggest success story, SRK and his films come with huge expectations and anticipation. So it hurts just that much when you see a big film fail.

More on that in a bit. I want to say that when Ra One was announced, I was skeptical. Not because it was SRK as a super-hero, I had bigger concerns. My bigger concern was director Anubav Sinha, who I think is amongst the most untalented directors. If you do not believe me, watch Cash and now, Ra One. However, when the release was coming near - I had started to expect more from Sinha. Then, I see this movie which is full of great action sequences, stunts, music and actors. What Ra One lacked most was what a film actually needs - A script, a soul.

Shekhar is a video game designer who is out to always impress his son. He is married to Sonia, who for some reason is writing a ridiculous book on abusive language. To impress his son, Shekhar makes a video game character where the bad guy never loses. That game character, Ra One, somehow comes to real life and kills Shekhar and is now out to get Lucifer, the user name of Prateek, Shekhar's son. Circumstances lead Sonia and her son to India where Ra One will follow them, but Ra One will have to go through the protector and good guy of the video game - G One, a lookalike of Shekhar.

The story on paper sounds good, in fact, great. To translate that on screen is a total different thing. Ra One seems like a film filled with action scenes but a lack of emotions. Also, how exactly does Ra One get out of the game? Why is he killing everyone? How does he reach India from London? There are some good things about this film. The music is just awesome. The visuals, effects and stunts are Hollywood-like. The film is visually brilliant. Sadly, the positives don't have much to do with the script.

Writing is weak. Characters are not well developed except, maybe of SRK. There are a few good lines, though.

Vishal-Shekhar's music is out of this world. The songs are all lovely! Dildaara is my pick. Criminal and Chamak Challo are outstanding as well.

Anubhav Sinha's direction is sore. I don't know what is in this guy, but he cannot make a good film.

SRK has the charisma that is so strong that it shows in a lifeless character of G-One. SRK holds the film together, barely, since it's such a bad movie.

Kareena and crew all do okay. Arjun Rampal is convincing.

Ovearll - A disappointment and surely a film that could have been better. Sadly, Hindi Cinema still does not have a proper superhero. (Krrish was crap too)

An Entertainer all they way!

Gurinder Chadda's Bend It Like Beckham is more about culture and stereotypes than anything else. It is surely not a film about Soccer or Sports. So don't expect a Remember The Titans or Coach Carter or Chak De India here. Having said that, I will add that it is still an entertaining, witty and brilliant piece of work. What looks like a sports film from the outside actually deals with many different South Asian stereotypes and Issues that NRI's deal with. Arranged marriage, homosexuality, racism are some to name a few.

Jasminder Bhamra is a young, naive teen who loves nothing more than soccer (Football to most, sorry I'm American) She is a smart girl and great in school. Jas gets offered to play in the bigger leagues but there's one simple problem - She's Indian! By the end of the movie, there are moments you take home with you. Mostly hilarious moments and some serious ones. Jas' struggle initially to play is well executed. Not to forget the scene when Tittu's parents come to Jas' house to break Pinky's marriage. Of Course the wedding scenes are funny. I also loved the whole Punjabi flavor of the movie, but that may be because I'm Punjabi.

Flaws? Of Course! The film does drag at times in the second half. Also, some of the whole soccer moments seem uninteresting. I also felt there was some minor lack of chemistry between Parminder Nagra and Johnathan Meyers.

The writing for the most part is great. I loved the one-liners in the movie. The movie guy in the end telling the Indian bride to look sad. "Indian bride never smiles, you'll ruin the bloody video," And also the one liners by the ladies in the end when Jas is accused of being a lesbian. "Lesbian? Her birthday's in march, I thought she was a Pisces," and "Lebanese? No, she's Punjabi" I was laughing hard at some of those lines. Especially the one's delivered by Jas' mom.

The music is awesome. Although the songs are not original, they are placed right and work well.

Gurinder Chadda's direction is excellent. I do not find her a great director but I feel she really hit the bulls eye with this one. Unlike most of her other work.

Every performance is noteworthy. Parminder Nagra suits the role to the T. She's just a fine talent in this one. Another actress that stands out is Shaheen Khan as the crazy Punjabi mother. She's just phenomenal. Kiara Knightly does well. Ditto for Johnathon Meyers. The supporting cast is good too.

However, the person who stole the show for me is a great Indian actor named Anupam Kher. He's just outstanding as the caring, sweet and concerned father. One really feels for the man by the end. Anyone who knows Anupam's work will agree with me on how versatile this man truly is. A delight to watch!

Overall, Bend It Like Beckham works big time but only if you know the stereotypes and lifestyles of South Asians abroad. An Entertainer all the way!

By the end of the of screening of this movie, one feels like they were in a different world. A world full of flawed people, a world full of stressful situations and a world with tons of Black humor. If one expects Monsoon Wedding to be a loud slapstick comedy, please change your expectations. Expect nearly 2 hours of subtle comedy and expect to experience a wedding like no other.

Lalit Verma is a higher class Delhi man arranging his daughter's wedding. Cash flow is a little tight, but that's just one of the many problems he's going to have to face. Aditti has a married ex who she is still seeing just when her father is arranging her marriage to Hemmat. Dubey is an event planner and he's in love.

If I have to give a vague analysis, I'd say Monsoon Wedding is not about a wedding at all. It's a about unresolved situations coming up in a wedding. Whether it is a stressed father, a confused daughter forcing herself into a marriage, a woman having to see her disturbing childhood again but thru the eyes of another or even a crazy event planner's realization to settle down.

Now if you have not seen the movie, you probably think, "What does this have to do anything with a festive Indian wedding?" Well, nothing. All these subplots unfold during this festive wedding.

That is the genius of Mira Nair's Monsoon Wedding. There is a lot of depth in the characters. Every character has flaws to overcome by the end of the movie. Best of all, we as the viewers are glued to the screen to know how things will end.

There are some notable scenes in the film. The initial reels are exciting because several subplots are being introduced. Of Course the scene with Aditti's realization that she is doing wrong is significant. Not to forget her confession to her fiancé is gripping.

The scenes with Vijay Raaz put a smile on your face. Naseer's scene when he's looking at his children and talking to his wife is excellent. Of course, the most dramatic scene would be the one near the climax when Riya confesses her childhood.

I do feel the film slows down in the middle and even a bit in the second half. That is the major flaw I have. I do want to add, the film could have been trimmed down a bit. Slightly.

The music is good with a good choice of handpicked songs to play in the background. None of these songs are original though. Good songs nonetheless.

The writing is crisp and the characters are strongly written. Editing is a small issue here. Screenplay is engaging. Lines in the movie are fantastic. Kudos! Mira Nair's direction is good. It's different and definitely in a good way. The whole colorization and art goes well with the tone of the movie.

Just like in the movie, Lalit Verma keeps the family in check and is holds it together. It is Naseerudhin Shah's performance that holds this movie together. He is an incredible actor and there is no doubt. If you're a fan like myself, do NOT miss this act. He's just flawless. Note the scenes when he goes tense and yells, note his dramatic scenes. Note in the climax when he has to make a decision. Note his Punjabi. Just astounding.

Another performance that stands out is Vijay Raaz. He's got a strange intensity in him. His comedy is great and there is no doubt. However, he shows his dramatic side here. A great act.

Shehfali Shah is a talent no given enough credit. She's first rate. We need to see her more. Lillete Dubey supports well. Vasundhra Das does a good job. Pravin Dabas is effective. Kulbhushan Karbanda is lovable. Rajat Kapoor does well. Others support well.

Overall - A black comedy with a good share of drama. If you want something different and good, go for it.
