Anthony (2020)
Beautiful and Heartbreaking ....
When I first read the synopsis of this film, and that it was based on a true story, I really wasn't interested. What was the point of showing someone's life if they had not been murdered? However, I watched the trailer and I found the main character to be an extremely charismatic actor, who draws you straight into the story and his wonderful family. And the whole "What life he may of had" worked brilliantly by giving you insight into the kind of person he was, and how much he was loved by others, and that he would try his best to make people happy. Now I'm not an idiot, I know this was painted through rose tainted spectacles, and his life could have been the complete opposite, we will never know, but I didn't care in the end. He, and His family were portrayed beautifully and I think it was a beautiful memorial for his Mother and family. I'm sure many tears were shed, including mine.
Starry Eyes (2014)
Gripping and full of suspense.
I can't believe that Netflix has a one star rating for this film! Yes, in places there are the cliché's that you would expect to see in a film based on a story about a struggling waitress/ wannabe actress in LA, who would just about give anything for a starring role in a movie. But so what... I thought this movie was strong and visceral like a punch that leaves you breathless.
Although the plot is a little predictable in places, I thought the atmosphere and general pace of the movie added to that disturbed feeling you get when you know something dark is brewing.
I loved the psychological aspect of this movie. It left me thinking about this film for a few days, weighing the pro's and con's if the same offer should ever come my way! Though, I think the gruesome murder's put a stop to any fantasies of looking for a coven of occult Devil's and Demon's! I loved Sarah's transformation. The cynic in me expected the climax to be a slap in the face for her, turning her into some hideous, ugly creature. However like the caterpillar, she transformed into a beautiful butterfly, with green jewelled eyes. I couldn't make up my mind if she was maybe a Succubus, Vampire or the devil incarnate... I have no idea... And to be honest it isn't important.
Rarely am I cheering for the bad guy, but I must confess I was very happy with the ending. Oh, and I am so glad that the envious, bitch of a friend finally got her dues. Shame about the other poor dudes though.
A sequel would be good, just because I'd love to know more about what she had become and the others in the cult.
Overall a very good film. Though, not for the squeamish!
