Midnight Cowboy (1969)
A wonderfully crafted story of two men's lives in the gutters of New York.
This movie was made in the old days and the way when a good film had reality and an emotional content contained within it that truly reflected the human emotion and its real experiences. This was one of Jon Voight's early movies, one of his best, not to mention the Odessa Files, and my favorite film of his "The Runaway Train" with Eric Roberts and Rebecca DeMornay. No one hardly ever sees movies like this anymore because of Censorship. This movie depicts the dark underground and shady characters, and the low life elements of New York City where a newcomer can easily fall prey to their greed and use him to the last of drop of humanity he had left. If you wish to see a truly RAW movie, I suggest this one because it is one of the best ever made with Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman. Enjoy the ride as it is an unforgettable experience!
The Time Tunnel (1966)
An old sci-fi television series I remember seeing as a child in Hungary.
I remember watching this television series as a child in Hungary in the 1960s in Black and White. This series was rather interesting as it revisited historical events by the two lost time travelers. I wish I could see this early sci-fi series again and refresh my memories of it. For some reason I am more fond of this program than the Star Trek television series that I have not seen until the late 1980s in America. For all I remember about the Time Tunnel series was that the two Time Travelers lost in time were not allowed to interfere with human history as any changes to it could have been catastrophic to present day. I wish it weren't so, especially when I think about some of the very dark days in Human History that should have never happened. Steve Horvath, Chicago
Anaconda (1997)
Fantastic Special Effects!!
I rated this movie with a 7 on a scale of 10 due to the special effects that were more than just great, but were fantastic! Mr. John Nelson deserves all the credit for his 3-d creature animation that made this B horror movie so life like and horrifying at the same time. The story starts out with a National Geographic Group's journey on the Amazon river in search of a lost tribe. During their journey up river, they pick-up a stranded boater played by John Voight, who is in search of a giant snake to claim for his fame. When the giant snake is located, the members of the group take sides for and against capturing the snake, but Voight claims victory. Soon after this, some people fall prey to the snake and the true sense of horror engulfs both the crew members and the viewers alike. I hope you'll enjoy the ride to the end of the movie!
La guerre du feu (1981)
An interesting and entertaining movie about early hominids.
I saw this movie when it was released into the Theaters in the 1980's. I enjoyed the pure acting by the performers since there were no understandable dialog in this production. This story happened before the language, as we know it, became a part in human civilization. The story is based on a tribe whose only fire is extinguished by an accident. The next hour and half is the story of 3 men from this tribe who left on a quest to find another fire. During their search, these 3 tribes man come across a few life threatening scenarios that some critics considered out of place, for instance Saber Tooth tigers and Woolly Mammoths. Some believe that the creatures were out of the time period, but when we know that 10 thousand years old Woolly Mammoths remains were found in Siberia a few decades ago, the creatures were not at all out of place for early hominids who lived a million years ago. The film introduced Rae Dawn Chong who becomes a central figure with her knowledge of knowing how to start a fire. She had became attracted to one of the 3 men who were in search for fire and she follows the 3 back to their own habitat to help them continue their survival with Fire.
Serpico (1973)
Police corruption is nothing new; It goes all the time everywhere.
This movie about Police corruption back in 1970's is nothing new to the younger generations. This activity has been going on for a long time, and any men who tried to expose it or talk about it ended up face down somewhere. This movie was the early beginning of the disclosure of these types of corrupt dealings and operations by some the Law Enforcement Community, whose job is protect us, Civilians, from Drugs and Violent Crimes. Another recent movie about this same issue was "American Gangster." Sadly, these types of activities continue in the present day in our big Cities under the shadow of conspiring members of the Law Enforcement Community who will never stop as long as there is greed in their hearts! Some men have dignity that Money cannot buy, while some others do sell their Souls for an extra few Dollars in their pockets!
Kinky Boots (2005)
A great and original story worthy of your time.
This is a great story that was made into a movie, which is enjoyable and worthwhile to watch. The movie starts off slow, but it picks up speed and momentum after a while. Some might object to the idea that a transvestite approached a shoemaker to help him make better lasting and stronger boots to wear for his evening show. Needless to say, an experienced shoe maker helps to conceive a new idea of a knee high boot with steel heels that will make the boot last and be stronger. The film's finale is a hands down winner with many transvestites parading with their new boots on a stage in a Milan Fashion Show. The success of the show saved the Town's people who have been out of work for some time. P.S. I did not like that Harvey Fierstein stole this film's idea and made a Broadway production out of it, but without ever giving credit to the original screenwriters and directors!
Lethal Weapon 4 (1998)
I saw one major mistake during its filming.
During the scenes when the Chinese Triad started a fire at Sergeant Mortaugh's house and a young child removed the restraints from their wrists with a pair of scissors while the interior of the building was ablaze. In order to escape from the fire, Martin Riggs threw a chair or a piece of furniture through the front window of the building as an escape route.
The MAJOR PROBLEM with this scene is/was that if and when fresh Oxygen is introduced to a fire, the fire would become even stronger and create a larger, a more ferocious Inferno from what it was before.
Thus the escape route would have become a death trap instead of an escape route! Even though I am not a Fire Fighter, common sense dictated this message to me while I watched a rerun of this production.
Drop Squad (1994)
"Drop Squad," the original idea for "Undercover Brother."
I did not know what to expect until I watched this movie for at least a half hour. At first glance it appeared to be a black exploitation movie with a political message of 1970's, with gong-ho mercenaries. Later I realized that the storyline and the underlying message of the film was the same and served as the idea of the more recently filmed Eddie Griffin's comedic version titled "Undercover Brother." This original film was a sad attempt to boost African American pride and its culture with a very bad taste coming out of Hollywood. The movie is demeaning, sarcastic, and disrespectful toward the African American community. It manages to high lite the negative habits and traits prevalent in low income communities, which does not speak highly of the writer(s) and director(s), and their focus while making this low value production. Fortunately, Eddie Griffin was able to put a much better spin on this story and made an enjoyable comedy, as opposed to the original movie's sad attempt.
Mackenna's Gold (1969)
Great Western Epic with a Moral story from we can all learn!
First, I saw this movie in a small country side cinema in 1970 or 1971 in Hungary when I was 15 years old. At that time I didn't speak English, nor did I know who were famous movie stars in American Cinemas, e.g., Julie Newmar, a famous actress of her time, nor did I know about Gregory Peck, nor Omar Sharif. Second, the story line has been told many times: There is a canyon filled with gold that belongs to the Apache. As its rumor abounds, greedy men with their dreams of a new life seek the gold while fueled by their greed. I found this premise to be nonsense and contradicting my knowledge of Native Americans' culture that had never revealed any greed or desire for shiny metals. Native Americans were happy living their daily existence by hunting and gathering, or surviving off the land as any farmer would. I believe the notion of greed in this film's theme was based upon the European's greedy culture that robbed the Native American's of their own habitat. Third, for a 1970's production, there were decent special effects and this is an entertaining story with its all star cast of the 1970's (I don't know if Julie Newmar appear nude in any other film? She swam nude in a river, but no offensive views of her were shown.). I picked up the DVD of this Classic Western today and have just finished watching the movie for the first time in more than 35 years, but I felt as if I were watching it for the first time in 3 decades! I felt very entertained by the film! In closing, I rejoice that I now have the 2010 DVD version in my Classic Westerns Collection! If you decide to watch it, I hope you shall enjoy it as much as I did!! Steve, Chicago, IL
