A Boy and His Dog (1975)
Possible Spoilers
Ellison says in a comment of his story that when you read his story, you won't find the distressing anti-woman sentiment found in the movie. I've never understood what he was talking about, because in that respect, I feel the movie followed the short story very closely. There is no doubt that there is a "distressing anti-woman sentiment" to the movie, but the real downfall of this movie is the production and acting quality. Don Johnson isn't horrible, but he is definitely not at his best, but the rest of the actors are very disappointing. The only thing this film really has to offer is the last scene, and that only works for it's shock value. Personally, I prefer the line from the story, it is more subtle, and therefore a bit more shocking. Overall, I give this film a rating of 3 of 10
Starship Troopers (1997)
I don't know what book they were reading, but it definitly wasn't the same one I read.
I'm not really going to say too much about this movie, I just wanted to give a little advice to writters and directors who plan to adapt a book to film. First step, read the damn book! Second Step, If you don't agree with the philosophy behind the book, don't do the movie!
I will be first to admit that I don't really agree with Heinlein's military based society, but he presents a clear philosophy in a straight forward and fascinating story. In the movie, The director has his own agenda. This is fine, if you are creative enough to tell your own story, but if you are going to steal someone elses, tell it the way it was intended.
The movie on it's own wasn't really that bad. The special effects were impressive, and the satire was funny in spots. If it didn't claim to be Heinlein's story, I would be fine with it and would probably give it a 5 out of 10. As it is, I cant rank it above a 3. Don't see it if you liked the book.
Night of the Lepus (1972)
One of the greatest bad movies ever.
I've told a lot of people about this movie, and nobody believes it could (or perhaps should) exist. This film is definitly not for everybody, but if you really enjoy MS3000, this is your film. The negative: You can't find it anywhere. I don't believe it was ever released on VHS and know it hasn't on DVD. The only way I know of to get a copy is to wait for it to be on the late late show and record it from the TV. That's how I got mine. A note for those who enjoy bad cinimatic work, there is a night seen where the bunnies are running through the small town (might be the seen from the matrix) where you can see a stage hand running accross the miniture set (It's dark, so you kinda have to be looking for him).
