The Young Ones (1982–1984)
The Best of British Lunacy!
31 August 2004
I remember watching The Young Ones back around 1982-83 on Public TV in Gainesville Florida while attending college at U of Florida. There were only 2 TV stations in this smallish city/town, ABC and the local public television station. It pretty much sucked for television except when they aired the BBC comedies like The Two Ronnies, Dave Allen at Large, Benny Hill and my favorite TYO's! I marveled at their total lack of respect for everything and everyone, especially stuffy english royal types. Back in those days, we in America rarely got to see a show where the characters showed total disregard for authority. Saturday Night Live was about as close to raunch and outrageous as it got. So I loved the 4 lads from england! It reminds me of my youth and the fun times I had back in college. To this day, I haven't seen the Young Ones on TV anywhere! I miss all these great BBC shows!

Heat (1995)

Never gets Old!
29 August 2004
After seeing this movie for the 10th time in the last 8 years(wow, is this already that old?), I must say that HEAT still is an enjoyable experience due mainly to the presence of 2 of the finest actors in cinematic history! The "heat" has a duality in this movie depicted bth as in the police(the heat) and the power and passion that DeNiro and Pacino have for their respective roles in the movie! I live in LA and am very familiar with the locations and names of streets and freeways..etc..and it is funny how they say places that aren't even connected in real life! But that is probably true of most any fictional movie. Another interesting side point is the real life bank robbery that took place in 1997 in North Hollywood where 2 men dressed in full body armour pulled of the bank hiest much in the same way it was done in this movie. They used similar rifles and body piercing armour. I actually went down to the bank the day after the robbery and checked out all the damage done by the AK-47 rounds that hit buildings, cars and houses all over that neighborhood! Real scary stuff. Talk about the movies affecting real life! Those 2 guys took this movie a little too seriously! But see it for the great dialog and action! 4 1/2 out of 5 stars!

Great performance, not a great part
22 August 2004
as good as Charlize Therons performance was, she wasn't playing a person of compelling interest. It wasn't like Aileen Wournos was a boring person but she just was just a stupid messed up woman who had a rough life. As great as the acting was on Therons part, the part wasn't as complex to play. It was like we are watching the life of a Jerry Springer guest! Christina Riccis character was much more interesting. Her infatuation with this ugly hooker was compelling in the sense of why? Why? Even after she found out she was with a killer, she stayed with her out of pity and her own lack of self-esteem. Bruce Dern is getting good at playing old geezers, I guess because he is getting old! All in all, it's a decent movie, just not great. Like I said, it seemed like an extended episode of Cops!

See it for Ricci's part...
22 August 2004
First off, Christina ricci is a doll! I mean, the sad puppy dog eyes and all just really make her adorable! I was blown away by her sincereness and sensitive acting style. I could see why she was chosen to play the role..she really makes the viewer want to see her in every scene!

The movie itself was like watching an episode of Cops! The characters were all seedy and the cheap hotels just gave it a Florida feel to it. I also noticed in some of the scenes that Charlize looked different wieghts..maybe because of the filming schedule. The movie was basically good, just not as good as I thought. I mean, really, a cheap street hookers life isn't exactly that interesting, is it? Perhaps if she were a high priced call girl like Hiedi Fleiss, we might have more weighty material here..but afterall, it is murder, and murder sells! See it, just for the lead characters acting and the decent 70's and 80's music and clothes and the hideous appearance that a very pretty actress named Charlize Theron took on to play this part. It's weird how in the last couple of years 2 very pretty actresses( Halley Berry and Charlize Theron) played parts in movies where they had to become sort of unattractive and both movies had the word "monster" in them! I also noticed that the part where they crash in the old folks front yard, when Charlize shoves Christina back into the car, she appeared to really smack her head into the car door! It must of hurt!

Hatari! (1962)
entertaining Slice of Africa!
22 August 2004
Never saw this movie until today on AMC. I always skipped over it when I saw it listed in the TV Guide. Never been one to watch or care for African flavored flicks. However, I did like English Patient but missed Out of Africa and wasn't thrilled with Gorillas in the Mist. For some reason, this is a perfect Sunday afternoon type of movie. I watched it while answering emails and having coffee. Typical John Wayne "tough guy with a heart" character who leads others on some kind of adventure..does he in every movie he is in? And John Wayne always has some much younger female beauty to deal with..although he makes it seem like a nuisance and like he is a father to her more than a lover! The scenery, the animals and the african safari make this an entertaining movie, and they don't make them like this anymore. If they do, they don't use major leading actors like these! The action scenes are good. The whole essence of the movie made me feel like I was 8 and at my grandmas house eating cookies and drinking milk while watching a larger than life adventure! Watch it, because it is pretty much a Cable staple.

One problem I had with the ending..
5 August 2004
Warning: Spoilers
I know that the ending was great and quite inevitable however, I have a question. Can a submarine fire a torpedo and accurately hit a ship 2000 yards way?

And is 2000 yards enough room for the sub to be clear of the nuclear blast or was it destroyed in the explosion as well as the ship? Just was unsure of the this and it bothered me. Seems like someone would have to know this but in the movies,

many times technical accuracy is often bypassed for the effect.

No Idea Andy Griffith was this funny!
3 August 2004
Like most everyone on here, I sort of fell into this movie one late night and almost decided to turn it off but after 10 minutes I was hooked! It truly is one of the funniest movies you will ever see.

No rude or insensitive remarks, no cursing..just some of the finest acting and gags ever and that includes Marx Brothers movies. This one is a keeper. You will laugh your booty off when Andy Griffith gets into his hillbilly routine. I had no idea that Andy Taylor of Mayberry was this funny! This movie and "Some Like It Hot" are 2 of the best comedies Hollywood ever produced and not one cuss word or nude scene!!!! See it if you ever get the chance!

Moores epic LIE!
2 August 2004
No doubt about it. He is the Leni Reifenstahl(Hitlers film-maker) of our generation. He is using his filmaking talent(if you want to call it that) to promote a left-wing socialist political agenda. Most of his film is full of holes and only partial truths. Like only using the few negative comments culled from thousands of soldiers who actually SUPPORT the war effort! Or the way he paints a phony picture of tranquility in Iraq before the bombs start dropping! Nonsense! Moore is a dangerous breed, but I personally think most INTELLIGENT AMERICANS see him for the buffoon he is. Maybe Hollywood likes him, what with them mostly being ivory tower rich types(Barbra Streisand..ect) who say they are for the little guy but find no guilt in taking 25M paydays or charging 2000$ for a concert ticket! What hypocrisy! But in the end, this movie may actually BACKFIRE on the Democrats effort to seize power. Americans by and large aren't stupid. Yea, many of the dolts who get welfare and other public benefits will vote democrat because they are promised that by liberals in return for votes, but the rest of us see the LIES and know Kerry is a dangerous man if elected to the presidency. Our biggest fears won't be Bush for another 4 years, but terrorist having their way in a weakened America! God have mercy on us if Moore gets his way! 911 sucks!~

The Quiet Man (1952)

Colorful and Authentic
1 August 2004
First off, I got to reply to some of the posters here who have stated they dislike John Wayne. Yea, I agree he was no Marlon Brando or William Holden and he never shed a tear(that I recall) but he was a real man. He never appeared to be acting, but merely being himself. That was the appeal of him. He never claimed nor acted like he was different from you or me. Not all caught up with being an enigma like James Dean or marlon Brando..just a regular guy who usually played the part of a man called upon to be courageous and brave. Now on to this gem of film! Too many great scenes and lines to write 'em all down! And the Michelinni character..the little guy who drives the buggy and gave JW the lift from the train station..he was a hoot! Irish folklore is among the richest and most interesting in this world. And finally, one can not understate the authentic and angelic beauty of Maureen O'Hara. She radiates such beauty and romance with her eyes alone that todays actresses can take off ALL their clothes and hardly come close to what she could with a mere glance! Simplistic? Today's world much to complex and sophisticated to ever put out a movie like this? I don't think it so much as sophistication as it that our minds have been dulled and polluted with seeing everything that was once held sacred. Kids today know more about sex at 10 y.o. than we did before we were 21! It is sad that a movie like this would not appeal to the youth of today because no one gets naked or there are no cuss words! Pity! Pity!

Red River (1948)
What is so great about this movie?
1 August 2004
I mean seriously! Is Red River better than The Unforgiven? Or The Good Bad and the Ugly? Or Tombstone? I found RR it to be wooden and almost ridiculous! Take for instance, when the arrow goes thru Dru's shoulder in the indian attack..she doesn't even yelp or scream in pain! Not realistic!

And JW gets shot at the end in the side but keeps fighting like it doesn't hurt! Where is the realness in that? Great? C'mon! Shane was way better! So was Silverado!

Evel Knievel (2004 TV Movie)

Kinda Dopey
30 July 2004
I wonder if the real Evel had anything to do with this? Not only was it nothing like what really happened, the movie also used many props that just did not exist! Like the Ceasars Palace jump in '68, Evel is wearing a full-face style of helmet that didn't even exist then! And the music in the background that was playing..Call Me the Breeze, by Lynrd Skynrd was a 1974 song! Was this movie supposed to appeal to todays kids only?

Because if it was, then these important facts don't matter!

Just like the battery flashlights in the 1997 movie Titanic! At least the always scrumptious Jamie Pressley was in it and looking fine!

Take it for what it is..
11 July 2004
Please people! Try not to over-analyze, like so many others have done in the other comments about this fabulous Techno-color classic from the early 1950's Hollywood. It isn't supposed to be a carbon-copy remake of the older 1936 version nor is it supposed to be making any sort of PC statements about race! Times changed and so did the attitudes and views of most americans, especially after WWII. Take it for what it is! A great musical wrapped around a love story. Beautiful lead actress, strong male lead and awesome broadway style tunes sung by great voices, especially William Warfield's "Old man River"!

Moulin Rouge! (2001)

Only for the Openminded and Enlightened Minds!
5 July 2004
Like many viewers of this movie, it was all too odd and bizarre at first and overwhelming and I avoided watching it for nearly 2 years. I finally saw it in late 2002 and have now seen it 6 times and own the DVD. The music is amazing! I have become a huge Josh Groban fan(he actually sings the Ewon Mcgregors songs). He was 23 at the time. Like anything that becomes great, it is hard to swallow at first. Just like the Beatles when they changed thier style, people HATED it, but their later has become classic. People always want the safe and normal status qou when it comes to art and music. nothing out of the norm. But I say NORMAL is BORING! What is todays oddity becomes tomorrows masterpiece and ultimately stand the test of time. This movie, in my opinion, will be considered one of the great movies of our time and future generations will like it very much. Did you know that the public rejected "It's A Wonderful Life" at first? Hated it! But it has become a Christmas Classic that we watch every year like it was out first time seeing it. Same thing with "Rocky Horror Picture Show". Just consider ourselves( the ones who love it) to be ahead of our time because we got it!

Moulin Rouge! (2001)

A Truly Great Cinematic Marvel!
5 July 2004
Yea, after reading some of the recent comments, it's obvious that not everyone likes or gives this movie more than a passing glance then blows it off as rubbish or silly or nonsense. But then again I wouldn't want to watch what they consider a great cinematic masterpiece, which in my opinion, is exactly what this movie is! From the great scenery and costumes to the uplifting and inventive use of modern music in a bygone era of Paris circa 1900, this movie had it all.

Sure, it took a little patience in the beginning because it went against what we are used to in movies. At first you are bombarded with music, dancing and sometimes bombastic dialouge but once it got to the actual story of a love that could not be, it was as good as any romance novel could hope for. It had Shakespearean elements of a tragic love story much in the style of Romeo and Juliet. Does Satine run off with the writer or marry the Duke(whom she despises) just to save the theatre and all it's actors who really are just a big group of misfits but family in every sense of the word. In those days, actors were not celebrities, like they are today, they were more like circus carneys or gypsies. Moulin Rouge, with all the twists and turns and pulling at the emotions of both lead actors, succeeds as the audience is drawn into their love story and feel every emotion as though it were their own! You fall in love with the leads and your heart aches for their doomed love. In the end, you feel the loss as deeply as anything you would feel in real life. I left the theatre in tears and i don't usually cry about anything! I say, watch it again and tell me if it isn't a powerful movie that ranks up thier with the best of what Hollywood has produced in the past 30 years or more! I could see Audrey Hepburn in the lead had this movie been shot in the 50's or early 60's and Marlon Brando or James Dean as the writer who falls madly in love with Satine. If you didn't like the movie, well I say your heart is hard and jaded and you are just plain boring!

2 Thumbs Waaaaaaaaaaaay UP! I rank it as one of my top 5 favorites of all time and could watch Moulin Rouge every year for the rest of my life and love it like the first time!

Must of been a reason..
3 July 2004
for this movie to have made over 1.2 BILLION dollars worldwide!

Bash it or trash it but it was what we go to movies for...well most of us! Romance and LOVE!

The fact that packs of girls and women went to see the movie time after time simply because it showed a love beyond compare at the tender young age in our lives, either means many of us are lacking that kind of love or we have never been in love and wish we were!

1.2 Billion...enough reason to make it the most watched movie ever!

Go suck an egg all you bashers!

The Hurricane (1999)
Same performance everytime!
29 June 2004
Let's face it. Denzel plays the absolute SAME character in every single film he does! That's not great acting! Want great acting? Watch Robert DeNiro! From the psycho cabby in Taxi Driver to the Raging lunatic in Raging Bull to the demented monster in Frankenstien to the mental patient in Awakenings! All different and all awesome..that's acting! What Denzel does is play the same type of person in all his roles. Have you ever seen him as a mental patient or a tortured POW or a complete psycho as he was in Taxi? No!

Boring!

No one is even close!

Sweet Hostage (1975 TV Movie)
10/10
Touching Performance and Story!
28 June 2004
Back when i first saw this movie I was in the Navy on the USS Enterprise. It was 1978 and I was 18. Very young and impressionable. I had been going thru the usual stuff most people that age go thru. A search for self and something I could believe in. So when they showed this movie on the ships TV I was on watch and sat their mesmerized as the movie progressed. The more i saw it the more i felt completely captivated by the main character martin Sheen played. He represented everything i was feeling and going thru. I felt like and outsider and that no one understood my true self. I found my self in tears and could hardly believe that there was someone who felt the same, even if it was a fictional movie character. I was deeply moved for days and found myself wanting to do everything from go AWOL and run away to commit suicide because there was just no way I could live in the world as I saw it and Martin Sheen saw it in that movie. I have never seen it again and hardly feel it would have any impact on me other than nostalgic but on that night far away on the Pacific Ocean, this TV movie Sweet Hostage was a godsend that I felt was meant to be shown while most the ship slept, I had a deeply spiritual experience. all from a movie! I chuckle now but it was one of my favorites for years until I finally grew up and got jaded and swept away in the typical pursuits of a young man..sex, girls and fast cars! Excellent movie.

Cool Fun Movie!
30 May 2004
Yea, I know this movie was not that good and the formula was well-worn but it was fun to watch for 2 reasons. Jennifer Connelly and the clothes and music. Jennifer was a heart-stopper as usual! I really couldn't see her attraction to Frank Whaley's character because he just seemed to dweebish!(80's term) I could see her more with the dark-haired thieve. But it did give the fantasy of the nerd getting the pretty girl some hope! All in all, it was a movie that was caught between eras! The years 1990-91 were sort of lost years where no one seemed to know what was next. Music was changing from the rock of the big hair style of Poison and GNR to the alternative sound of REM and none of the music in the movie sounded like neither. It was an experimental sound. The clothes seemed like the 80's but were trying to be something different. Of course we know what was on the horizon..Grunge! But this movie was the end of an era. It was released in 1991 but was probably made a year before that. It's one of those movies you will watch if you were a 20 something in the 80's and feel a nostalgic pang. I get it watching movies like Back to the Future and Breakfast Club, St; Elmos Fire..etc. So don't judge this flick to harshly. It's just filler but it does taste good! Especially Jennifer Connelly!
