Across the Universe (2007)
The best musical film I've ever seen in my 22nd year of existence.
The copy of this film was sitting in my memory files for quite a long time, then suddenly I decided to watch it. I couldn't believe that it took me years before watching it, gosh, it's Beatles musical. If I had known it before that the songs that they've used are all by Beatles, in a second, I'll play it right away.
I enjoyed the film a lot, from opening to end. I can't get enough of how they incorporate the songs to the scenes which tackles about revolution, yes, revolution in the eyes of the young adults. The plot is very empowering and touches some issues of the society including gender preference, infidelity, being an illegitimate child, and etc. There were lots of dancing(contemporary ballet?), singing and interpretation from the characters. Across The Universe is not your average teenage film, it has more depth in it, the story has it's purpose, an intention to liberate our minds, or just to simply refresh our memory of how the people from before handled the world war.
I like the acting of the cast. I'm deeply impressed with Evan Rachel Wood's performance, as this is the first time that I've seen her act. She seems dedicated with her role as her characterization is above average(she act naked and to me it's already a tough thing to do, that's why kudos to her), plus her voice sounds so wonderful(why I haven't noticed her before?why?). I'm certain that she gained another fan within this minute. Jim Sturgess is another factor why I decided to see the film. I want to see how will he act his character this time after seeing him in "21" & "One Day". I know that his a good actor but I'm not prepared to see that he is also a good singer. It seems that his a former band member way back in UK(isn't amazing?), and I'm totally into him now more than ever. I'm literally drooling from all of his scenes because he reminds me so much of the young Paul McCartney(can you imagine?), they look really alike(or perhaps it's just the music..) anyway I can say that he gave an exceptional performance with this production. There are also a lot of supporting characters that contributed on making this one of the best films such as "Prudence", "Max Carrigan", "Sadie" & "Jo-Jo".
The cinematography of this movie makes me real envious, the shots and camera movement were all so epic that I wouldn't mind to share the same excellency. The music scoring is undoubtedly one of the production's strength as well as the captivating visual effects. The colors, the allude, simile, metaphor, the lyrics were all factors of making this an unconventional state of the art and definitely a must watch.
Restless (2011)
Another usual plot
"We have so little time to say the things we mean."-Enoch Brae
Ever since I saw the film's poster, I made a promise to myself to see this film, and finally promise kept. This poster caught my interest because of the colors used and how it looks different with other poster. Usually lead characters in poster have those "practice poses" but this has a natural feel in it. It seems that I'm paying too much attention with the film advertisements nowadays, I just can't help it, because it's one of the factor that will always arouse people's interest. And aside from that I'm a follower of Mia Wasikowska, giving me enough reason to watch this film plus I was anticipating for the performance of Ryo Kase, who looks younger than ever in his role.( I never thought that he has a Hollywood debut! He looked really good in Hachimitsu to Clover, but he looks way better here!)
Story-wise(spoiler alert!), even though the plot is nothing new but another usual death of the ill female lead and the positive change it will bring with the rebel male lead, I still commend the writer for being able to create a different angle out of the overused plot. I also like how they used an indirect scene with a solid meaning to conclude the story, it's as if leaving us the option to think of what happens next after the last scene.
I'm also deeply impressed with the woody tone of the film that they've used, giving a classic silent film vibe which suits the story and the characters. The cinematography is beyond average though music scoring is quite average, but still the total package is alright, it's decent.
My Boyfriend's Back (1993)
Ridiculous but I like it!
"I died for you! I came back from the dead for you! I love you!"- Johnny
This film shows the best example for the famous saying "Love conquers all".lol!
Originally, I'm supposed to rate it at one star, but after watching it, I can't help but to appreciate the humor in it. I can say that I enjoyed it though the plot is a real crap, but it maybe considerable for it's genre. And even though the story is a real non sense, there is still a magnet factor which will make you stay until the end. I also like the comic strips, I find it so 90's and that mere feeling brings nostalgia thus adds interest on seeing the film, especially if you're an 80's or 90's baby.
I really like the lead actors but it's difficult to find any latest news about them, especially with Traci Lind. I hope that someone would do an in-depth report about her.
Overall this is a ridiculous film but you'll like it.
Keith (2008)
Still worth a try
I got curious with the synopsis, so I decided to watch the film, but then, I realized, it has nothing more to offer than what it was stated in the synopsis.
I truly like the intention and on how some scenes were shot especially the ending scene(I want to film the same shot!), but it fell short on how the story was presented. I wish they scrap some of the scenes in the first half(well actually the first half should be edited-out!totally!), and replaced it with more sensible scenes that would add more depth with the story because the second half is quite considerable anyway. The first scenes were dragging the story in sense of, it's too predictable making it less interesting too watch. They should have done better with the script, considering that the actors were not that promising in their portrayal, especially Jesse McCartney, something lacks on his performance that doesn't click with the character. The whole production has it's potential, but they were not able to focus on the field that can play as their strength, which I think is the script thus giving a sense of dissatisfaction with it's viewers.
Cracks (2009)
An unexpected impressive motion picutre
"The most important thing in life is desire. You can achieve anything you want. The world is yours for the taking. Nothing is impossible for you, my girls. All you need is to desire it."- Miss G
I was actually looking for a teenage flick film just to lighten my mood, and I found this film, however, it's far from what I've expected. The treatment of the film can be compared to those critical acclaimed films. The plot centered on a social issue that deviates from the standard of the society but is not uncommon in films. Cracks tackles a difficult and sensitive issue that others might find odd to discuss even on our present time.
I really like how the setting sets the atmosphere, but it's the acting that I like the most. The leads(Eva Green, Maria Valverde & Juno Temple) was able to successfully channel their roles. It's so good that I can't help but to had goosebumps with the tension among the characters. It's a film that's quite disturbing and even the ending will leave you hanging with questions. I'm not hundred percent sure if the novel(which it was based to by Sheila Kohler)has the answers though I think it would still be a good read.
This motion picture is highly recommended for anyone whose into idiosyncratic stories.
