Lemonheads (2020)
Well produced Indie...
The grim storyline is made more watchable by several interestingly portrayed characters. Perhaps not a candidate for this years feel good flicks list, but worth the watch, that is, unless you're trying to kick dope!
Shackleton's Captain (2012)
The story behind another's "fame".
Capt. Frank Worsley of New Zealand deserves as much if not more recognition than his employer, Sir Ernest Shackleton in regards to the latter's Imperial Trans-Arctic Expedition. What Capt. Worsley accomplished on more than one occasion borders on miraculous. This docu-drama is enhanced with the outstanding work of Australian expedition photographer Frank Hurley. He managed to save numerous stills and silent film footage that speak to the conditions that the crew of "Endurance" had to exist in, or die. Well done production!
Head Full of Honey (2018)
Alzheimers isn't funny and neither is this film.
Though Nick Nolte has a few moments that showcase his still fine acting chops, that alone isn't reason enough to sit through this. I actually felt embarrassed for him and the other adult actors for having to try to play serious with scenes that vacillated between idiotic and unbelievable. The biggest problem in my opinion is that something as serious as Alzheimers, is treated as a source of comic material that in the end, is just flat slapstick surrounded by a cringe inducing, credibility stretching production. Both Alzheimers and the actors deserved better.
The Company You Keep (2012)
Lots of stars, little intrigue, less script.....
I'm sorry but this was a weak film all around. No acting stands out, and probably for several reasons. The script is lame as hell, the stellar group of actors have for the most part a few minutes of screen time, and the story is too predictable. I imagine that's why I never felt I cared about the outcome for anyone while watching it. Technically there are many problems with how the authorities operate, or more accurately, don't operate, but probably my biggest complaint is that the reporter gets little resistance from anyone he talks to. Come on! These people didn't stay undiscovered for 30 years without a strict code of silence and loyalty. And the big revelation of the biological parents of Brit Marling's character?.... That's easily figured out... about the time she reveals (again so easily)to the reporter that she is adopted. I watched it all, sorry to say. I realize that no animals were harmed during the production, but my love of films was, and Redford sure didn't help by giving us this dog.
