The Trip (2002)
Trip and fall...
flat on its face. After seeing some of the positive reviews and awards this movie received, I was looking forward to another funny, yet touching, gay romance. Cheesy and charming, leavened with a bit of gay history as the story moves from 1973 to 1984, my expectations when popping in the DVD were realistically low.
If only I could get back the 94 minutes of my life spent watching this movie, I promise to do something with them more productive and less painful - like chewing aluminum foil or or digging out an ingrown hair.
By the end of this gratingly bad movie I was yelling at the TV, begging the characters to die and end the misery. It's not that the lead actors weren't pleasant to look at and reasonably talented, but the writing was a non-stop stream of clichés and stereotypes without any genuine feeling or insight. Not to mention the story ending in 1984 with the Brad Pitt lookalike activist dying of an unnamed disease while the boyfriend was protesting Reagan's lack of a health-care policy - if the writer had read any basic history, those protests were still a year or two in the future. But I'm nit-picking here when there are so many better reasons to dislike this move.
If you're looking for mindless entertainment avoid this movie and watch some porn - the performers will be just as pretty and there's a better chance of a believable plot or an honest emotion.
