Captain Fantastic (2016)
Enjoy life!
Dear Lucy,
Sometimes it feels like we are raising you like the father in this movie. You'll probably sometimes feel like his kids. Feeling weirded out, when your friends in school ask questions about the way we live. I can't know for sure when you're about to read this review, but right now I am typing this, sitting at the kitchen table of our first tiny house. This way of living has unplugged us from the ratrace that society seems to be in.
Your mother and I hope to give you the same joy as this movie is showing. All the funny weird moments that we have together. Also the ability to be prepared when survival is needed. But most importantly, to not overdo it. We might be idealists, but reality is always near.
I hope you'll live a fantastic life!
Your captain, dad.
The Matrix (1999)
Simulate your own reality
Dear Lucy,
Sometimes dreams can be more than reality and maybe reality can be nothing more than a simulation. Watching this movie opened up my eyes when I was young. It was in a school bus when we drove back home from Chech Republic that I first saw it. After that I've watched this movie over and over. I really loved the idea that our reality could be a controlled simulation. If you like this concept then try reading about "the simulation theory"
The special effects of this movie were beyond the time in which the movie came out. No one had ever seen such epic slow-motion like this before. I'm certain you'l love this piece of art. Make sure to watch all the sequels. They may not be as good as the original, but certainly worth watching for its story-line.
If you ever feel troubled or doubtful, just realize the truth: "there is no spoon". You can truly simulate your own reality. It's what we call: visualization or dreams. Even your memories of the past can be altered. It's just a matter of perception. Feel free to break the code sometimes.
Hugs and kisses,
Dad.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Eternal concept of the destined love
A great story about love and yet the same story about love. Just like many time traveling movies are about destiny. A conceptual thought that everything happens for a reason. Everything has the same purpose no matter how hard we try to change it. The nice thing about this movie is that the law of attraction breaks through anything we try to undo the past.
If you are someone who loves to be mindfucked and yet wants to be moved by emotion, this is the movie for you.
Interstellar (2014)
Truly Breathtaking
After seeing this movie I felt like I had been scuba diving for 3 hours. Probably because this movie is literally taking your breath away. It's the kind of movie that takes you in a thought suspension that lasts for days after seeing it. The story uses understandings from science that are just incomprehensible for a common human being. These sciences will only be comprehended by our children's children. Just like we now understand the world is round instead of flat and rotating around the sun.
This movie is a work of art. It jumped into my top 3 movies of all time, joining the matrix and inception. I just love thought provoking movies that pushes the limits of our brain's capacity.
Inception (2010)
The vulnerable state of dreaming
Dear Lucy,
This movie shows us a different side of dreaming. Most of us take our dreams for granted and don't think they are that important. But the truth is that many ideas are born within our dreams. Inception shows us that our subconscious could be most vulnerable during our sleep. Planting a small idea in the deepest layers of our mind can have a massive impact on our daily choices.
In the movie we see that some minds are "trained" to know when someone else is invading their dream. This has a big resemblance with the practice of lucid dreaming. (Yes, this is how you got your name) Sometimes with lucid dreaming it can happen that you have false awakenings. You think you woke up, but you're actually still dreaming. This phenomenon is shown within Inception as layers of subconscious that each have their own passage of time.
What the movie failed to show is that with lucid dreaming everything is possible. A trained lucid dreamer can take hold of their own dreams and make anything happen. Maybe movies are just bound by rules, but I think it would be a great concept for a sequel.
Now ask yourself, what idea would you plant inside your own subconsious?
Hugs and kisses, Dad.
