Truly Madly Deeply (1990)
So nothing lasts even death
I started watching this movie recently because of Alan Rickman. I only wanted to see his movie choice and I loved it. About this movie, it's a loss. The interesting part is that it's easy to remember one at their best, but hard to tolerate one at their worst. When someone is gone, usually we think of how good they were and forgive all their mistakes. It's easy because it's the last time. But when you are living with them again, after the first few days of happiness there goes irritation. "Was it like that before?" And I don't know if Jamie meant to invite their ghosts over to irritate Nina so that she could move on, or things just happened the way it was because Jamie was real, he kept it real. But it sadden me when she finally moved on.
It killed me when he read the poem in Spanish and asked her "Do you want me to go?" I could of given this movie more than 8/10 but I'd rather not. It's to real and too hurtful.
Close My Eyes (1991)
I'm not sold
Rather than the movie itself, the content is really irritating to me. Not because of the incestuous relationship between the two,I can handle that, but because the fact that the sister is acting like a total b. It could be excused if it's love. But I guess it's not. She uses her brother. She uses her brother yet on the other hand she doesn't dare to let go of her millionaire husband. I guess that could be considered realistic? Then again, the husband must be a fantasy for he knows everything and he just closes his eyes.
I'm not quite in mood of criticizing the movie or how it was made, but I guess since it gives me this personal feeling about loving and hating a character their acting must be superb. I feel sorry for the men and the woman is really ugly, in and out. I couldn't sympathize her, I guess.
Alan Rickman is the only reason I started watching this movie but he couldn't keep me from loathing it sometimes. He is so mesmerizing in this movie, as usual, very fine acting.
An Awfully Big Adventure (1995)
Reenactment of Peter Pan
That's how you should look at it. TBH I skipped a lot of scenes because I was looking forward to Alan Rickman and I couldn't bear listening to the dialogue, it was hard to understand their accent, and somehow the feeling was weird. However, I gotta say this movie has a lot of symbolism, as someone put it perfectly on a comment in youtube, of how Potter is Peter Pan who seduces lost boys, of Stella as Wendy who sadly escapes her childhood in a very very twisted way and O'Hara as Captain Hook whose actor usually play both Captain Hook and Wendy's father.
I have never been a fan of Peter Pan, that thing is just so creepy and it annoys me the idea of that selfish little pretty boy. This movie annoys me as well, the feeling is too personal it's almost weird to see those ugly things reenacted on screen. Not a lot of people get the deeper layer of meaning of this movie if they don't see the relationship between the play and the movie itself. I would not like to see O'Hara as a child molester even though he seems to be. The dark side of the industry I believe. Girls are expected to be slutty very, very soon; and though it's kind of disgusting O'Hara took her but he had a reason indeed, and that reason turned out quite nasty later on. Very, very sad indeed.
I'm quite confused when it comes to talk about rating this movie. It is terrific, but it's too dark, too angst, too depressed - not that these qualities mean it's bad like a lot of usual audiences would think - I think usually people expect the light at the end of the tunnel, but with all respect to reality and in connection with Peter Pan, sorry Wendy has to grow up. And life can be quite nastier than you think.
It is just, very depressing. But still a deep and high quality movie. But controversial, indeed.
The Song of Lunch (2010)
Art is controversial, and to me this is what art is about. Real people with real lives.
It hasn't come to my knowledge yet that this short movie is acted out of a poem, and I have no interest in contemporary poems to go take a peek in the book. But I gotta say, I've read a lot of negative reviews here and I wonder why. But art is controversial, that's for sure.
This piece of work is beautiful, peaceful in a sense, and has a lot of emotion. Which is something mainstream movies nowadays are not aiming at anymore. Just old people back flashed their old lives. Just an old man being nostalgic in an old place and haven't been able to move on since he lost the love of his life. Now that's an POV because from her point of view maybe the story will be totally reversed and he will appeared as an arse, which I don't really care. Some has mentioned how the feeling is so horrible it almost haunted me, I was so scared when I was watching him getting drunk and I know almost right away what's gonna happen. Just old and typical stuff, nothing new, so true, so real. And people move on like that. But I understand the feeling constantly, even though I'm not that old, but that feeling of loss I do bring.
I have watched this and then listened to it again and it made me feel very, very bitter hearing Alan's voice telling the story and I feel very bad. This could be you, this could be me, this could be anyone, and I know this has happened, is happening, and will happen to lots of people out there. I don't know what art is supposed to mean, I think Frankfurt intellectuals might have more saying in this than me, for they spent a certain amount of time to argue whether or not art is supposed to enhance the creation of the elitist or art is for the majority of people. Or they would be arguing the same thing, art for the sake of art or art for the sake of humanity.
