Very Enjoyable, Addictive!
4 August 2022
To my shame I overlooked every season of Brokenwood Mysteries, assuming that a small NZ production couldn't possibly attain the standards I demand from a murder mystery.

How wrong I was! I watched one episode and haven't stopped watching since.

The plots are absorbing, laden with quirky murders; the characters each vivid and colourful, some eccentric, all portrayed with conviction by an excellent cast.

Several reviewers have compared this series negatively with Midsomer Murders, but as a Brit and a Midsomer fan who has watched every episode *far* too many times I have to disagree and can only say the similarity is favourable. Brokenwood has all the elements that makes Midsomer so enjoyable and special.

I've binged the first five series and thankfully have three more to enjoy, it's my treat each evening and something I really look forward to.

If you enjoy Midsomer Murders, Father Brown, Sister Boniface or any other quirky murder mystery, give this a chance - it will not disappoint.

10/10 from me!

Simply A Bit Of Spooky Fun
4 November 2017
Of course it's fake! Lighten up everyone and don't be so serious - it's simply a little bit of spooky entertainment. There is even a disclaimer at the start of each show actually telling us that it's for "entertainment only", has no-one spotted this? The programme doesn't claim anything else. It isn't real, it isn't intelligent, but is interesting anyway for taking us behind-the-scenes of renowned (often historic) haunted locations that we would not normally have access to. Try to take it in the spirit (no pun intended haha) intended, and enjoy a little lighthearted, spooky fun :)

Starlings (2012– )

Thoroughly Enjoyable!
3 June 2012
I find it hard to believe that myself and the previous reviewer are talking about the same series! "Starlings" is a wonderful family drama for Sunday evenings. I say 'drama' because it is more a drama series than comedy - the humour is subtle and incidental, gently complementing each storyline. It is not slapstick, outrageous or 'in your face', which would ruin the nature of the programme and compromise its credibility. The family is realistic, we can empathise with each character - all thoughtfully created and portrayed, blending well. The cast is superb, it was especially pleasing to see Brendan Coyle and John Dalgleish teamed again since their Lark Rise To Candleford days. Each episode features a specific storyline with the family's ongoing undercurrents woven in, bringing continuity and credence. We witness good times, bad times, emotional highs and lows, and accompany the family through their various incidents and mishaps during day-to-day life. A warm, gently humorous portrayal of family life, a real 'feel good' drama. Well done, Sky 1!
